By your definition, everyone who ever asked for a raise or felt they deserved one is greedy. Baseball players are already making money far beyond their worth to society. Let's for a second look at other jobs and see what happend if they suddenly stopped working. Garbage men, teachers, military, police, fire, sewage plant, etc. are all "worth" more to our society than a baseball player. Those guy suddenly quit wihtout replacements and we are dead in our tracks, baseball goes on strike and life moves on. So we could easily call all of them greedy. Why not have players making $75,000 a year and get jobs when they finish playing? Of course its because the owners would be rolling in hundreds of millions of dollars in profits. So you ask what is greed, what is fair to the owners, fans, and players. What we have now is everyone for themselves. Frank is leading the league and playing out his ass. Will JR exercise the clubs $11 million option? You and I agreed they will not. Was that greed from JR? But to answer your question: I think negotiating with a couple teams and accepting the best offer is not greedy. I think faking a crisis back home, leaving a team, being declared a free agent, then signing with a contending team is greedy. I think signing a contract then holding out when you no longer like the terms is greedy. Once you sign a contract, live up to it, but negotiate the best you can. I think it is greedy to sign a contract and two years later complain you are no longer the highest paid player. -
According to the World Almanac of Presidential Facts published in 1988 President Reagan counted among the organizations he belonged to a certain Emil Verban Society. The Emil Verban society is named after a baseball player who in 7 major league seasons hit .272 for the Chicago Cubs. The association is for Die Hard Cub Fans

Frank draws too many walks to have a streak like this. Not a knock on Frank of course, just the reality I tried to find a stat on Frank's best streak for games "getting on base via hit or walk" but couldn't find it. I imagine it's rather lengthly.

Yikes, how about all of the above? The least surprising to me is Franks. Not to say it isn't a mild surprise. Of course no matter how he plays, the club proably will let him twist in the wind and not pick up their $11 mil option. Shingo has the pedigree to do what he is doing, so I guess there is, on some level, a basis for his erformance. Lee is a solid player, and I guess we can expect him to write his name in the Sox record books in a few spots. Again how do you predict a 30,40,50 game hitting streak? Uribe is having a career year and seemingly came out of nowhere. Maybe his friends and family arn't surprised, but I thought he was going to be the utility guy, not a starter, and not leading the team. So I voted Uribe as the surprise, which I consider different than the most impressive, most improbable, or most congenial!

I just got home for Frank's AB. I opened mlb.tv and gameday. I saw Lee at 0-3, saw he was going to get another AB and had goosebumps. I really expected a home run.

Defered money is never the same, it might also be more or less, depending on what is negotiated. If they offer zero interest he loses from inflation and whatever his investment might bring. I don't see how you can call someone greedy for negotiating his best contract. At what point is the man greedy? When he doesn't take the clubs first offer? Are the owners ever greedy? Would the owners be greedy in not taking their option on Frank at $11 million? Would Frank be greedy in accepting an offer from someone else at above his $8 mil option? -
Why is it when I look at Southpaw I think I love you You love me We’re a happy family With a great big hug and A kiss from me to you Won’t you say you love me too? I love you You love me We’re best friends like friends Like friends should be With a great big hug And a kiss from me to you Won’t you say you love me too? :puke

Easy, the laws in effect where you are at. Morality and laws even right and wrong changes.

You may not, but the legistlature seems to think so. Especially if the "one true love" happens to be over 18.

Plus he has so many options, with all his money

Nice example. So anyone that negotiates their best possible deal is greedy? I guess every person I ever hired was greedy, because none of them said ay me less than you can. Here's an example: John F. Kennedy donated all of his Senate and Presidential salaries to charity. Is every other politician greedy? -

I'll agree with one, not with two. A man has a responsibility to his family. Why should a guy accept less money to stay with a company? Would you want a player who is so uncompetitive he will accept less? Out of loyalty? To the fans? Are these the same fans that have been arguing he isn't worth it? I don't think anyone is greedy in wanting to make more for himself and his family. This by all accounts will be his last big contract, he's setting up his future grandkids and their families. I would want that for my family. -

I've never been in the locker room, I'll take your word for it -
You know what is really, really sad? More than a few parents in America today would gladly handover their kid to Jackson for a couple days at US$5 Million per day. :puke

Juggs, Basically you want to sign him for 5 years at his current price, no more. Is that based on revenues staying flat? A possible decline in his play? New TV contract? Are you believing the payroll will stay flat for 5 years? -
I am almost always happy when ex-Sox players switch to the NL and have nice careers. Almost :sosasucks :sosasucks :fthecubs

They use to be on Okidata records, now I find them mostly on HP Best of all they are totally free, no problem downloading them and sharing them with your friends. Custom mixes suck though.

I don't think Maggs numbers warrant a $4million drop in salary. He will easily find a club at his current contract if not a nice raise. There is no reason to believe he's on a decline. -
