Achoo! - Oink!
QUOTE (shipps @ Apr 29, 2009 -> 08:58 AM) We should be no more worried about the swine flu than we are the regular yearly flu. The overreaction is amazing. As a MD friend of mine explained a couple days ago, the reason we have not had a worldwide flu pandemic in decades is this sort of "overreaction". We are forgetting the deaths that can occur from a new strain could be in the tens of thousands.

Achoo! - Oink!
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Apr 28, 2009 -> 12:58 PM) No one in the United States has died yet from contracting the disease. Sadly, that changed. http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/04/29/swine.flu/index.html

Arlen Specter to switch parties
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Apr 28, 2009 -> 01:24 PM) I think that if politicians decide to switch parties while they are stil lin office that they should be required to resign and run again under thier new party. After all, most people voted for that person based on their party, and if they are now switchign parties, they just disenfranchised everyone who had voted for them. Guess he doesnt have enough balls to try and run as an independent, eh? But when someone resigns, party affiliation is not considered when the Governor appoints a replacement.

Ozzie's vendetta continues....
I really wish this debate was over two guys who would be stars on most teams, instead of two guys that would be backups on half the teams in baseball.

Achoo! - Oink!
QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Apr 27, 2009 -> 11:16 AM) 2008: Approximately 21000 people die from the FLU. Not the Swine Flu...just the flu. Let's just keep it in perspective. This is a nice way to stimulate the "anti-flu" economy. Actually, that number is kept as low as it is by aggressive measures when a new strain develops. What may seem like an over-action, is probably appropriate.

SERE called their tactics "Torture" in 2002
Sad. Most people will agree what is, and is not, torture. The merits and effectiveness is actually a fair debate in my mind. I believe it is ineffective, and really has no merits except to make some people feel better or fool themselves into thinking they are "doing something".

Ozzie's vendetta continues....
Dikta had an unwritten rule that you would not lose your starting spot because of an injury, no matter how well your replacement was playing. I can sort of see it, you don't want guys hiding injuries. Still, baseball is a lot different in the number of games. There is no reason why, upon his return, he can't get a start or two while BA rests. I'm pulling for Brian, I hope he wins the spot and finally gets some respect from Oz. If not, trade the man, he deserves that.

Colon, Contreras
QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Apr 24, 2009 -> 11:21 AM) Colon has had 1 good start, 1 so-so start and 1 crappy start. Saying he's had two good starts is just wrong. That said, he should be given some more time to work it into shape. I agree, but have to point out that this is about as in shape as Colon will ever be.

Rail Transit improvements thread
QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Apr 24, 2009 -> 11:05 AM) Busiest stretch of highway in Texas. And Tex, maybe you make stops at Texas State...the outlet stores...the snake farm...Gruene Hall...and the race track. Oh, and Fiesta Texas. That's kind of what I was thinking. I'm working on getting off in Austin and just driving back home from there. But I will more than likely be flying up to Illinois from San Antonio.

Colon, Contreras
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 24, 2009 -> 10:36 AM) He hasn't really been much better this year so far... http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/...o01.shtml?redir Perhaps I should have phrased it better, but I'm alluding to having someone like Garland back there. Someone whose performance would later command a decent salary.

Rail Transit improvements thread
As part of an adventure it looks like I will be traveling on the Texas Eagle from Chicago to Austin or San Antonio with my daughter. We will get a sleeperette for the trip. Takes 30 hours to Austin, 33 hours to San Antonio. No earthly idea why Austin to San Antonio should take 3 hours. That's a one hour or so drive.
