maybe they should sit PK against KC. He's 2-30 against them this year. It's likely going to be a small ball low scoring game. I wouldn't have minded Kotsay at 1b and someone else giving it a go in Konerko's spot. Of course now that I suggested that, PK will go 3-4 with a HR and a double.

Maybe about 5-10 years ago a half season rental would get you top prospects but that's not really the case anymore. Phillly wouldn't give Drabek, Brown, or Taylor for Halladay last year why should the Sox have to give up their top guys for a less valuable Dunn? I doubt Hudson, Flowers, or Viciedo would be included in a Dunn deal. I could see Morel, Torres and a younger pitcher with high potential being dealt.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jun 27, 2010 -> 12:26 AM) I'm not sure Kenny wouldn't have sold off some talent if there had been a stronger market for his veterans. I mean within a few days of each other when we were way out of it we got a "open for business" report from a National reporter as well as a "very little interest" report. The market may have saved Kenny from himself. Anyway, the White Sox's financial situation is a tricky one; we did supposedly offer Johnny Damon ~$7M at the end of the offseason, I do wonder if that money is still available as JR has hinted recently that it may be. As for the D-Backs only saving $1M by trading LaRoche now; well as I said they did just give away Conor Jackson for nothing in order to save a measly $1.5M so their financial standing appears to be a highly volatile one. And we are talking about Adam LaRoche here, not exactly a star, career .833 OPS and a current .820 OPS this would be a very nice upgrade for us (since we have a pretty terrible DH situation currently) but he's not that good of a player. i agree. I don't get all the LaRoche lust. He's a decent player but the only way I want him is if Haren comes with him. Teahen was starting to hit when he was in jured. His return will have a similar effect of adding LaRoche and he's already on the roster. If they are going to make an addition, make it a worthwhile one.

Power is definitely lacking and while a lefty would be ideal, a guy with power from the right side is also attractive. The guy i'd want, and have wanted for a couple years, is Corey Hart. You put him in RF ,move Quentin DH and the lineup looks alot better. He's not making a ton of money and the Brewers are going to have to move somebody if they want to assemble some kind of ML pitching staff. I think it would be hard to get him without using Hudson though and, while i'm not usually a prospect guy who believs the hype, i would be hesistant to trade Hudson as he looks like he'll be the real deal.

QUOTE (dmbjeff @ Jun 20, 2010 -> 03:07 AM) I think it was ridiculous of Ozzie to sit both Rios and PK on the same day and putting out the lineup he did. They have an off day on Monday and could have DH'd PK or Rios on the upcoming homestand if they needed a breather so badly. He could have sat one today and one tomorrow. I also think Viciedo should have started. He is a big bat that could have helped score more runs. I know that a win is a win and I am proud that they won, but Ozzie put out a horrible lineup when he didn't have to. The fact that they won was a miracle outing by Peavy. 8 out of 10 times that lineup loses. I think that is horrible managing. My point has been, how do we know Viciedo would have made it a better offensive lineup? He may be totally overmatched early on. Didn't Beckham start out something like 2 for 40? We know it would have made them worse off defensively than Vizquel. Let Dayan play when your offense is at full go and it's easier to overcome defensive deficiencies and if he hits, all it does is add another threat.
-
I don't get all the uproar over Viciedo not playing today. Ozzie had to figure with Konerko and Rios sitting that it was likely to be a low scoring game. If Viciedo is as bad at 3b as alot of people claimed, why put him in position to make a key, possibly game-changing error. Go with the defensive guy in Vizquel and let Dayan play another day when the regular lineup is out there. I think it's alot more likely he'd make a key error than go 3-4 with a HR and 3 RBI's. Vizquel made a nice defensive play and scored the only run. Everything worked out fine.

Sox at Washington 6-19 game thread 3:10 pm first pitch
Lemon_44 replied to southsider2k5's topic in 2010 Season in Review
Rios does need a day, he's been struggling a bit as of late. Viciedo wasn't even on the team 2 days ago so it's not a huge deal he's not playing. At least it's not Nix in the lineup. Maybe Viciedo "celebrated " his 1st night in the bigs a little too much last night and isn't ready to play. A hot summer day game after an extra inning night game is a perfect time to rest some players. The only bad thing about is the Sox are on a streak and you'd like to keep the mo going. -
i don't really care about his walk %. He's up there to swing the bat and be agressive. I like it. Heck AJ has only walked 6 times all year and 25 is his career high. Some guys just like to swing the bat, nothing wrong with it as long as they are producing.

Does it matter that Quentin has sucked this season?
Lemon_44 replied to Vance Law's topic in Pale Hose Talk
That's a hard .206 -
I'd be all for sending Beckham and Quentin down but they can't. Quentin is completely lost and seems to be up there swinging hard at every pitch and hoping he hits it. Beckham at least seems to have some kind of approach at the plate even though he can't hit the ball with any authority. The sad thing is Jayson Nix is worse than both of them and his playing would have to increase if either were sent down. Not really having any other options sucks because like Ozzie says, the big leagues isn't a training ground, you're expected to produce. Heck, if those 2 were even just hvaing bad years, instead of downright dreadful, the Sox could be right in the mix with Minny. Along with many others, I keep thinking they are going to turn it around but after every glimpse of hope they go back into the toilet.
-
Just to show how awful this season has gone, I think last night is the first time all 9 guys in the batting order finished the game with a batting average above .200. Beckham and Kotsay finally got above the Mendoza line. Amazing if true.

I posted in another thread that I think Buehrle to the Mets makes alot of sense. They may even overpay a bit for him. What's the status of Fernando Martinez? Is he still pretty much untouchable from the Mets standpoint or have they soured on him? It seems like he's been injured. Probably couldn't get him for only MB though.
-
The only guys who I think KW deals are the usual suspects in Konerko, AJ, Jenks, Putz, and Buehrle. That frees up 30+ mill for KW to re-stock next year. Jones and Kotsay won't be back either. I have no problem with Teahen manning 3B. He was just starting to hit and I think he'll be fine once he's settled in. Trades i'd like to see: Jenks and some prospects to MIL for Corey Hart. Buerhle to the Mets for Fernando Martinez. I'm not sure what the story is with that guy but i know he was a top prospect and hasn't put it together. He's still young and I don't know if the Mets have given up on him or not. I think Buerhle still has very good value, especially to a NL contender. AJ to Texas for a prospect. Konerko to Arizona. Maybe the Sox could pull a Connor Jackson for him with the way he's struggling.Arizona may not want to take on PK's contract unless they get back into it though. He'll probably end up in Anaheim for a prospect. Send Putz back to Seattle for a prospect. I also wouldn't rule out KW trying to acquire a high talent arm like he did with Peavy last year with an eye to the 2011 rotation. Maybe he makes a run at Oswalt or Haren. Even with staff looking good on paper in this past off season, he supposedly made a strong push for Halladay so he knows there's never enough pitching. Sign Adan Dunn as your 1 big FA acquisitiion. You could have a 2001 lineup looking like: 1b- Dunn 2b-Beckham SS-Alexei 3B-Teahan LF- Pierre/ Martinez CF- Rios RF-Hart C- Flowers DH-Quentin that lineup doesn't look a ton different than this years but any lineup that doesn't have Kotsay, Jones, Vizquel, or Nix in it most of the time has to be an improvement. The pitching staff could be: Danks Peavy Floyd Oswalt/ Haren Hudson - Freddy, imo, is living on borrowed time but he'd also be in contention for the 5 spot. Pena Santos Thornton Linebrink LH longman- Torres??

Joe Cowley says our season is over: do you agree?
Lemon_44 replied to whitesoxfan101's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I don't know their farm system at all but you would think St.Louis would have an interest in MB. They are locked in a battle with the Reds and look at the success they have had in reclamation projects like Loshe, Piniero, and Penny over the last few years. And i wouldn't even say Buehrle is a reclamation project yet. -

How come a couple games ago people were saying it was great move by Cora to let Vizquel hit/swing away, when in fact he should have been bunting or pinch hit for, and made a weak out? It was a horrible move but Beckham bailed him out with a 2 out single that game. Yet Ozzie lets Vizquel hit and it's a terrible move to some. The guy people should be complaining about is the total waste of a 5 hole hitter in Kotsay. Now that's something you can b**** about Ozzie. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 28, 2010 -> 11:39 PM) Yeah, give me a 10 game stretch. Like the team, Beckham seems like he's coming out of it, then he'll go into a funk and disappear again. A low 500's OPS isn't going to get it done, obviously, unless you're Chris Getz and that's your MLB ceiling. We just need to figure out a way back to .500, we've been stalled between 5-8 games under now seemingly for weeks. Of course, playing TB and Texas, it's not so easy to reel off 4 or 5 victories in a row, but we're pretty lucky to get the Rays when they're struggling like they are now. If there is any way to get Beckham and Quentin going, you'll likely see a streak. Along with Rios, they are,on paper, the 3 best everyday players. Having two of them struggling to hit .200 is hard to overcome. Teahen and Alexei are starting to show some life and you know you'll go through streaks with Konerko so if CQ can get on track, watch out.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 28, 2010 -> 09:47 PM) Cora managed a great game tonight. That might not bode well for Ozzie... I wouldn't get carried away. Beckham bailed him out of the bad managing in the top of the 9th. He was ok to stick with Thornton in the bottom with all the lefties coming up. Putting in Putz would have been another bad decision. Doesn't matter though as it was a big win.
-
QUOTE (Heads22 @ May 28, 2010 -> 09:38 PM) It's Matt. Probably Putz if he gets in trouble. i'd leave Thornton in and go with Jenks if needed. Why throw Putz in a close situation? If he blows it and your closer is available, all you're doing is asking for trouble. If he saves it, all you have is controversy. Jenks has done nothing in save sitautions to warant not being out there.

Gamethread: White Sox(17-24) vs Marlins (22-21) 1:05 PM CSN
Lemon_44 replied to chisox2334's topic in 2010 Season in Review
QUOTE (dmbjeff @ May 22, 2010 -> 03:24 PM) Yeah he is easily the biggest disappointment of the offseason guys. He is a regular player who is playing horrible. Pierre at least has started to play better as of late People need to give Teahen a chance. He hasn't even played 2 months for the Sox yet. Let him get settled in and adjusted and i think he'll be fine. Look at Rios's first 2 months with Sox. Alot of people wanted him gone. Granted he came in mid-season but there's still an adjustment period no matter what. I'll bet Teahen starts hitting well and has a very good 2nd half. -
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 14, 2010 -> 09:58 PM) Scott Lewis just got released by the Indians. He's a 26-year-old LHP who had a 2.12 ERA with an 18/4 K/BB ratio in about 17 innings in AAA. Not an injury concern, which likely means the kid is a dick. He needs to be brought in. If it's the same Scott Lewis, i think he's had arm issues all the way back to his days at Ohio State. The guy is very talented though.

I hope Kotsay is in the lineup tonight. He's 5 for 34 .147 lifetime against Meche. Maybe his average will actually go up. That's much better than his current .133. -

QUOTE (Lillian @ May 12, 2010 -> 08:06 PM) It appears to me that he has altered his stance as well. He is not in as deep of a crouch as he formerly was. That is to say that his knees are not as bent. He's also standing just a little further away from the plate, especially his back foot. I also noticed today that he did not have the thumb on his top hand extended with his thumb pressed against the bat, as he always did before. He's the only player whom I've ever seen do that, and so I usually notice it. Another change is that he was wearing one of those rubber thumb guards on his left hand. I'm not trying to suggest that any of this is the cause of his problems, but rather simply making an observation. It might be more of an indication that he is searching for answers and experimenting with different things. Why not use the video and try to go back to what he did so successfully before? his stance used to be more open as well. NOw he's almost lined up directly at the pitcher. I don't know why he, or anyone, changes with something they have been successful with. It's like the young golfer who wins early on in their career and then decide to change their swing only to never be heard from again.

Any team is going to struggle mightily when your top 2 in the lineup are barely hitting above .200 and your supposed #1 threat,Quentin, is hitting .200 as well. I'm a big Ozzie fan but i fault him at running the same lineup out there everyday and expecting something different. He dropped Pierre for a game or two and he's repsonded by picking up his hitting. He needs to drop Beckham down in the order until he gets himself going. Batting Teahen second aginst righties may give him a needed confidence boost and bat Alexei second against lefties. At least mix thing up and try something. The roster is not going to change much so OG needs to tinker with it until he hopefully finds something that works.
