  2. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 08:09 PM) Big Frank about to sign with Toronto, according to ESPN. wow
  3. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 06:04 PM) Am I talking to a brick wall? Wite, I like you man, but this is going way over you head. How on earth are you going to add the posting fee into the payroll when it doesn't count as payroll? It makes zero sense to me. I'm not counting it as the payroll. Their payroll is $125-150 mill. They will not pay a luxury tax. They will spend $175-200 million this year. $50 million of that is not spent toward the payroll. I'm not so sure what's hard to understand about that.
  4. 4/10 atleast I wasn't the worst?
  5. If we're talking musically, it's Paul. He can pretty much do it all. He can play any instrument and can come up with a great tune for a song in about 5 minutes. He's a genius. If we're talking lyrically, it's John. If you have listened to any of his work, with the Beatles or as a solo artist, you know what I mean.
  6. QUOTE(ptatc @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 04:46 PM) Ich verstehst du. awwwwwwwwwwwwesome
  7. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 04:03 PM) Well. First of all, because you asked me directly, I'll respond. The White Sox are rumored to be shopping 2-4 of there starting pitchers. You can never have enough pitching, which is why spending a dollar amount like that to acquire Matsuzaka would be a good move, both on the field and off the field for the White Sox. The Sox are not shopping 2-4 of their starting pitchers with the intent of moving 2-4 of their starting pitchers. KW is shopping 5 starting pitchers - the 5 he can - with the intention of moving 1, or 2 if he can get an MLB ready starting pitcher in return in trade. That's pretty much it. And $30 million for a luxury is not a good move, ever. That's what Matsuzaka would have been to the White Sox. First of all, what I'm not sure you are understanding is that the Red Sox MLB PAYROLL will be anywhere from $125-150 mill. They will SPEND anywhere from $175-200 mill. Secondly, the Red Sox current payroll is around $95-100 mill, and I'd assume you'd agree. Add the $50 million from Mats, and it's up to about $150. Include an estimated 3/$30 deal for Mats, and it's up to about $160. Include the other additions and subtractions from the team, and you're probably looking at another $15-40 million in additional money spent, and they are up to $175-200 mill So, by taking out the Matsuzaka bid, the Red Sox payroll is $125-150 million, but the actual amount of money they spent was $175-200 mill, meaning that over a quarter of the money they will spend in regards to player personnel will be spent on the bid for Matsuzaka. After this year, that money spent is no longer figured into the payroll, because they've already paid it, so they are back down to $125-150. Verstehen?
  8. I'd imagine Gagne wants a shot to close. If he does, I see Cleveland and Boston all over him. If he doesn't care about that, the Sox could be a suitor for him.
  9. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 04:13 PM) Not to start an argument, but may I ask why you say that? His minor league stats suggest he looks to be a pretty darn good player. Not the greatest, but pretty darn good. Career minor league numbers, .308 batting, .385 OBP, .860 OPS, and his #'s in his last full minor league season, 2005 at AAA , were better in every one of those categories. His SB #'s leave some room for improvement, as does his SB %age, but that may well be something he could be taught. Strikeouts are a little high, but he also takes a good number of walks. That was 2005 at A-, A+, and AA http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/M/l...-milledge.shtml It is good to see that while he hit at a worse clip, his OBP stayed in the same neighborhood.
  10. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 07:53 AM) - While 50 million is a ton of money, odds are the White Sox bid something in the 25-30 million dollar range. Had he gone to them, I find it hard to believe you'd all be b****ing and moaning as you are here. Why would the Sox spend $25-30 million when they have 6 starters as it is? The Red Sox are going to end up spending anywhere from $175-200 million this year, even if "only" $125-150 of it will be towards their payroll. How is that any different from the Yankees spending $200 million in payroll?
  11. QUOTE(FlaCWS @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 01:22 AM) How about the Yankees becoming the first team in MLB history to blow a 3-0 lead... in A-Rod's first year with the team. Who can forget that utterly pathetic attempt to swat the ball out of the hands of the Boston first baseman? Since ARod was the one that didn't throw out Roberts; since ARod was the one that allowed the game-tying hit; since ARod was the one that allowed the game winning hits in both game 4 and 5; since ARod was the one who gave up the Damon grand slam. That's mere coincidence, and everyone knows it. I bet ARod wins a World Series before his career is over.
  12. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 02:50 AM) Boras, like everybody else, thinks the Red Sox will make money from this move. If Boras told me the sky was blue and the grass was green, I wouldn't believe him.
  13. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 01:39 AM) The Red Sox aren't spending $51.1 million dollars for one season. They are spending $51.1 million to have him for 3-5 years. You aren't making a lick of sense in this regard. As I mentioned, you can't simply combine the posting fee and the contract. Why can't you combine the bid and the contract, when in fact, they are both being paid? They will likely end up spending anywhere between $80-100 mill on Matsuzaka, with the bid and contract. Only $30-50 of that will go to Mats, and only 30-50 will count against their salary, but the fact remains they will have paid that much for him. It's risky as f***, and takes nerves of steel or brains of s***...in this case, it's probably both. It may be generalizing, but I don't care - there are very few Japanese starters who have come to the MLB and had a long stretch of success. Nomo had 4 good years in America, and was otherwise mediocre. Tomo Ohka's been a great middle of the rotation starter his whole career, but pretty much nothing else. Ishii was mediocre, and beyond that, you run into names like Irabu, Yoshii, and Suzuki. It's $30 million on a pitcher who's never pitched in the MLB while also killing quite a bit of the offseason's spending. It's risky as f***, and takes nerves of steel or brains of s***...in that case, probably both. If it's $15 mill, it's quite a bit different.
  14. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 07:49 PM) Damn, Wite, that was wrong. You didn't have to diss Scotty like that. Well, we'd make it to the World Series atleast
  15. QUOTE(Vance Law @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 12:46 AM) Youch. Crisp is actually pretty bogus. Sox fans are frustrated that we didn't make the playoffs with such a good team and want to blame it on Podsednik, (who had a mediocre, not horrible, year and endured some bad slumps), who they saw struggling often during the year, rather than on our pitching (poo-tching, really), which took us to a World Series title in '05 by being the best in the AL all year, and then lights out in the playoffs, and in '06 managed to keep us out of the playoffs despite the having #3 run scoring offense in baseball, by giving up an ENTIRE RUN MORE PER GAME THAN WE DID IN '05. Whew, got it all in in one sentence. Crisp last year had a joke OBP of .317 and managed basically half the number of steals that Pods had. We are still talking about the same offense that was 9th in runs scored in the second half of the year, right? Outscored by the likes of, oh, every team in the AL Central? The same offense that was 11th in OBP in the AL in the second half? The same OBP as the Mariners and Tigers, and only better than the DRays? The pitching was bad, but the offense was horrendous in the second half of the year, and there's no debating it. A large factor in that was likely Podsednik's second half OBP of .296.
  16. QUOTE(slick03 @ Nov 14, 2006 -> 09:06 PM) I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but this contract seems like its going to screw the sox over if/when the decide to re-sign Crede. I just see Boras asking for at least that much, if not more, to get Crede re-signed. I hope I'm wrong, but thats the way I see the Aramis signing I'd be surprised if Crede was in the Sox plans for 2008.
  17. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 12:18 AM) Not only would 51.1 million dollars not be enough to ink the both of them for two seasons combined So why does $51.1 mill have to cover 2 seasons? Last I checked, the Red Sox are only spending that $51.1 mill THIS season. And the Red Sox will likely end up giving Matsuzaka a deal around 3/$30 or so, which is $81 mill for 3 years. If you can't get Zito and Schmidt for 3 years at less then $81 mill, I'd be shocked as hell. So they're willing to pay more than the luxury tax, so long as they don't break MLB rules and actually pay against the luxury tax. Oh k, there's nothing ethically wrong about that at all... ...other than the fact that it's a ridiculously stupid business decision, but carry on.
  18. QUOTE(knightni @ Nov 14, 2006 -> 04:31 PM) There's a difference between an old power hitter and an old speedy leadoff guy. There's also a difference between one of the best power hitters of the past 25 years and an average to slightly above average lead off hitter. For example, I see no difference between Kenny Lofton and Jim Thome...both were two of the best within their different aspects of the game, and learned how to adjust their game as their body started to wear down with age. How about a guy like Danny Tartabull or Matt Williams who both pretty much broke down in their mid-30s? Juan Gonzalez, after being one of the premier power hitters in the AL for nearly 10 years, just fell off the face of the earth(though in his case, it could be due to a lack of steroids). Same song and dance with Albert Belle, and multiple other power hitters out there. Leadoff hitters rarely lose their ability to make contact with the ball and get on base - they just lose their speed. Power hitters rarely lose their ability to hit the ball with power - they just start doing it much less consistently, and with much less power.
  19. Brandon Webb would like to thank God, his mom and dad, and Orlando Hudson
  20. anything I know the words to, especially if I'm driving alone
  21. trade Vazquez and Gooch for Heilman, Pelfrey, and Humber trade Garcia for Michael Young bring in veteran insurance and put in AAA Cuz maybe it is just me, but Garland, Buehrle, Contreras, Pelfrey, and McCarthy is pretty sick Of course, there's the whole going into the season with virtually two rookies in the rotation, but that's just part of the risk and reward. Atleast the Sox still have Heilman, which is nice as hell. Of course, then there's the problem with the OF, but with that much money freed up, you can almost sneak into the Soriano race. Whether it's a smart move or not is a different story all together, but it is possible. If not, there's always Alou, Drew, and Jose Guillen(who's sketchy as hell, but still good). Doubtful that's happening, but it's fun for me to think about anyways
  22. WTF KDUB...GIVE ME A RING, UR BOWLING IN THE 2'S AND DOMINATIN'
  23. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 01:27 PM) Pods could at least get a major-league ready player or two. Podsednik is barely major-league ready. If he gets TWO MLB ready players, and they aren't Timo and Neifi Perez, KW should be crowned.
  24. this is a fanstastic trade by the Yanks. There was a report they might pick up Sheff's option, then he freaked out, they still picked it up, and everyone knew he was going to be out of the Bronx, and they still get Sanchez and 2 solid relief prospects? For a guy they didn't plan on keeping, that's a hell of a return, plain and simple. As far as Detroit's side of the deal...Sheff will always be a good hitter, power or not, and that I have no doubt about.
  25. QUOTE(beautox @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 01:31 PM) Agreed, i wouldn't be supprised if they moved Luna and Blake. Also they've got Trevor Crowe('05 1st round pick 14th overall) on the up and coming hes destroying the AFL(.333/.443/.417, 15BB/9SO 3/3SB all in 19Gs/72ABs) I think hes going to get a very long look in ST, he might even win the bid for opening day LF. .234/.318/.325/.643 in 174 PAs in AA not happening
