Glad to see the Bills put up a good effort.

Any realistic way to upgrade the starting pitching?

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Oct 20, 2006 -> 12:58 PM) Well when Buehlre has a month with an ERA over 11 another one over 6 and one more in the 4's, Garcia has 3 months with an ERA +5 and another in the high 4's and Contreras has a month with a +7 another +6 and one +4 I think you can be a little more forgiving to Javy for his 2 horrible months. And everyone's love child(including mine), Jon Garland, had 4 months with an ERA of 4.50 or higher. Vazquez was our second best starter all year, and I'm not going to buy any argument against that statement. -
QUOTE(knightni @ Oct 20, 2006 -> 04:15 AM) I'd love to see what Don Cooper could do with Prior. Think they'd take Vazquez for him? KW wouldn't take Prior for Vazquez...atleast I hope he wouldn't. The gamble for greatness is the same in both pitchers, so why bring in the one who has been hurt like every year since his 2nd year in the league?

Since quite a few others are changing the rules, I did too. I simply took players from teams that won fewer than 80 games this year, and every team is represented. C - Victor Martinez(CLE) - 800K 1B - Nick Johnson(WAS) - 3.2 mill 2B - Orlando Hudson(ARI) - 2.3 mill 3B - Ryan Zimmerman(WAS) - 327K SS - Hanley Ramirez(FLA) - 327K LF - Jason Bay(PIT) - 750K CF - Grady Sizemore(CLE) - 500K RF - Miguel Cabrera(FLA) - 472K DH - Travis Hafner(CLE) - 2.5 mill #1 - CC Sabathia(CLE) - 7 mill #2 - Brandon Webb(ARI) - 2 mill #3 - Carlos Zambrano(CHC) - 6.5 mill #4 - Scott Kazmir(TB) - 371K #5 - Felix Hernandez(SEA) - 340K CL - JJ Putz(SEA) - 415K SU - Howry(CHC) - 2.5 mill SU - Fuentes(COL) - 2 mill MR - Chris Ray(BAL) - 335K MR - Jon Rauch(WAS) - 335K Swingman - Matt Cain(SF) - 328K C - John Buck(KC) - 350K IF - Freddy Sanchez(PIT) - 342K IF/CF - Bill Hall(MIL) - 420K OF - Carl Crawford - 2.5 mill OF - Andruw Jones - 13 mill Payroll $49.585 mill So a quarter of my payroll is spent on a power bat for my bench...wanna fight about it?

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Oct 19, 2006 -> 10:15 PM) The only untouchables on this roster right now is Mac and Jenks. I need to put this line in my sig or something, "but with the amount of money Brandon will be making the new three years, he is invaluable to this franchise." I don't even consider Jenks untouchable. I love Jenks, he has dynamite stuff and will be closing for the next 5-10 years(based on health of course), but plain and simple, he's a reliever. On the trade market, I'd value him like a starter, so if someone wants to pay for a reliever as if he's a starter(aka Krivskyism), and the offer is right, you must make it. In the same regard, McCarthy is probably a #3-4, but due to his cost, you must treat him like Johan...if someone wants to overpay that badly, they can have him. He CANNOT be apart of any package, barring a twist in the roster where a young, cheap pitcher is brought into the organization through trade(such as Anthony Reyes), and even then, I'm trading any of the other starters over him unless it is completely unavoidable.

So f*** all 3 of them and sign Dave Roberts.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 20, 2006 -> 12:00 AM) Congrats to the Cards but at most I see them winning one game, and I see CardsJimEdmonds15 lurking in this thread so I'm sure he'll have something to say. Congrats to you, but I just think the Tigers are the superior team. As for that Endy play, given the context of the game, easily one of the best plays ever. Like Tony said though, I honestly couldn't care less about these playoffs but I guess I will root for the Tigers because of the fact that I have 20 bucks on them to win it all. Ah, the Tigers winning the World Series prediction makes sense now. Rowand, please bet on the White Sox next year.

And Endy won't catch that 3-1 Cards

QUOTE(greg775 @ Oct 19, 2006 -> 09:13 PM) Is there any serious talk of us getting Ichiro? I love that guy. He's being wasted in Seattle. How bout Brandon and Fields for Ichiro? I mean this is Ichiro?? If there's one guy I won't trade for Ichiro, it's McCarthy. If you trade him for Ichiro, the payroll is up around $115 with no room to do anything else.

QUOTE(JackTalkThai @ Oct 17, 2006 -> 11:38 AM) Name some young pitchers who prior to their first heavy inning season of their career had previously pitched that much in their life. ALL young pitchers reach a point in their career where it's safe to say, "they have never pitched this much in their life." That's just common sense. It doesn't mean they're due to regress. And while it's true that Todd and Kenny are nearing the end of their careers but that's what everyone was saying prior to the season. Who's to say they each don't have a couple of productive years left in them? Did they show -anything- this year that would suggest they're slowing down? I didn't see anything. Look at both of their "post-All-Star break" numbers. They both turned it on strong in the 2nd half and more importantly down the stretch. There's still good gas left in those tanks for at least one more season and I don't believe that's wishful thinking in the slightest. And I agree that some guys overachieved this year (though not as many and as much as you think) and that some of them may indeed regress but with youth like Verlander, Bonderman, Zumaya, Ledezma, Granderson, Sanchez, Maybin and Miller either on the team or waiting impatiently in the wings...you have to admit that there is some solid room for PROgression as well. You also can't forget that Dombrowski is going to be allowed to open up Illitch's checkbook this offseason. So some of those guys that may indeed regress...who's to say that they won't already be replaced with proven free agents by the start of next season? The offense has also produced surprisingly well, considering how little they walk and how often they strikeout. Minnesota's not going anywhere, the Sox are going to come back strong again next year, Cleveland has to put together a full season at some point in time here soon, and KC is on their way up, to go along with the Tigers World Series appearance this year. The Tigers could easily be the team to win 90 games and finish 3rd next year...or it could be Minnesota, Chicago, or Cleveland. We'll have to wait to see what happens in the offseason, and then what transpires over the regular season.

QUOTE(BainesHOF @ Oct 19, 2006 -> 12:27 PM) Yeah, McCarthy was so valuable that Ozzie barely pitched him in meaningful situations. There's baseball value, and there's financial value. McCarthy is too financially valuable to this club right now to trade him. If he puts up a 12-10 4.50 ERA 1.30 WHIP season next year, he'll have been the most productive starter for the Sox when comparing money to performance. McCarthy is pretty much all-around untouchable.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Oct 17, 2006 -> 11:42 AM) I should add that Beltre's season was arguably the best single season ever by a 3rd baseman. This I'd definitely agree with. However, he had years of mediocrity before that season, so basically one season got him $64 mill. If Joe Crede puts up 3 years of .280 30 100 .830 offense with GG defense, he's going to get 5/50, and he could even be looking at more with Boras as his agent.
-
Yeah I'm definitely not understanding why you would move Ichiro to LF. While on the topic, sorta...how is the Mariner's OF, depth wise? I know they're high on Jones, and Reed's there...but what are their feelings on Snelling? He was the M's #4 prospect coming into the year, but he had a horrible year at Tacoma, so I'm mainly curious as to if they are still very high on him or not. And if not, how high would their interest level be in Anderson?

QUOTE(longshot7 @ Oct 18, 2006 -> 03:21 PM) Tillman is one of the worst CBs I have ever seen. He is HORRIBLE. Vasher at least can get INTs. Tillman belongs on the practice squad. Randy Moss would like to agree with you

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Oct 18, 2006 -> 12:16 PM) I think R&W is saying that if you can upgrade in CF you do it, you don't just sit around expecting Anderson to become great. I know one thing, I think he can be great defensively in CF, but that doesn't mean he'll be a good player. Considering our other option was Mack, BA should have been playing everyday. However, if we have the ability to upgrade to someone who can do both I see no harm in doing it because I don't think BA has shown enough of anything to ever think he'll be a solid major leaguer (thats still a big question-mark). That said I know he has power potential and stolen base potential so if he can correct his holes he can be a Torri Hunter type player. Hunter didn't start hitting well until his 3rd year in the league. Also, he played 99 games and had just 354 ABs in 2000. If it's possible, it may not be the worst idea in the world to have Anderson be a 4th OFer while trying to get him 300 ABs. If an upgrade in LF and an upgrade in CF can come in, he could realistically play 5 games every 2 weeks and probably approach 300+ ABs...and in case of injury, he's the first one in. The problem of course occurs in Ozzie getting him out there that often, but it's an idea worth comtemplating.

CF-Ichiro 2B- Iguchi SS-AROD DH-Thome 1B-PK RF-JD C-AJ 3B-CRECE LF- PIERRE OK I think it is time for me to put the X-Box controller down LOL. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?s=...t&p=1302975

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Oct 18, 2006 -> 12:42 AM) But the problem is, he really has nothing more to do or prove at triple A. And if we keep him on the major league team, having him on the bench will just stunt his growth further. So either he needs to be our starting CF to begin the season or we need to trade him. Trading him is just flat stupid IMO. GG defensive CFers can be impact players, even if they put up .250 20 70 .750. Anderson's still a ways from that, but he's probably capable of putting up .250 12 50 .700 or so next year, and perhaps he could produce even more than that. The Sox are not going to find better production for less anywhere else. CF should be about #5 on the priority list come the offseason, with the LFer/leadoff at 1, trading a SP at 2, bullpen help at 3, the Uribe/SS situation resolved at 4, and then maybe you can look at CF. And if ARod is indeed acquired, and the plan is to play him at SS, then either no more moves will be made(if possible to do it with Crede staying), or 3B moves up on the list ahead of CF. Basically, CF should not be a concern at all going into next year, and I don't think it is.

QUOTE(Brian @ Oct 17, 2006 -> 08:11 PM) I'm on an 80s music fix. I downloaded Mr. Mister's "Kyrie" and Mike and The Mechanics "St. Elmo's Fire". Anu other catchy 80 tunes I should download so they can get stuck in my head as well? Does this belong in music thread? Eye of the Tiger, Centerfold, anything by Poison. And of course the greatest song of all time, 18 and Life.

QUOTE(redandwhite @ Oct 17, 2006 -> 07:46 PM) I'm all for Brian Anderson's improvement. You have to love what he brings to the table defensively, I thinks he's an awesome kid, and everything inbetween, but it's stupid to ignore how poorly he did this season by taking away random months throughout the year. I could bat over a full season, and if I got beaned, or walked a couple times, I might get on-base at a .250 clip. That doesn't mean you should conclude that I'm a half decent Major Leaguer because I did this or that, it should be a given that I suck because of how poorly I performed over the entire season. Basically, I'm not for adding, subtracting, looking at small sample sizes. A year is a rather appropriate sample size, I'm not saying BA won't improve, because he should and will most likely, but to say he's a .275 hitter because he hit that well over a couple weeks is ridiculous. No? People arguing that Anderson had a good year because of his last 4 months are people arguing for a lost cause. Anderson had a horrible year offensively. That doesn't mean we as fans, the scouts in the stands, the coaches in the dugout, and the executives in the front office can't be encouraged by significant improvement as the year progressed.

I still say we satisfy both Ozzie and the offense's needs and get Roberts.
