We'll say good arsenal then. He can throw 5 different pitches and, with the variations he can throw of his stuff, it really can equate to about 25 different looking pitches. I mean, seriously, if he didn't have his cutter and then one of his offspeed pitches, he'd be f***ed, no matter his command and control.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 26, 2013 -> 09:40 AM) We'll see. They used to think that about KW at the time of Moneyball. Some still do. I do think he would already have overturned a post-game buffet spread if he was in that position still. Or disappeared to Egypt, Argentina or the Appalachian Trail for a couple of weeks, but it was never his style to hide from reality for too long. It was always to confront problems head on like a bull. We'll see how Hahn handles the challenge. It's going to be lots of "no win" trades, except for Crain. No matter what he does, he's going to be second-guessed, first-guessed and third-guessed. Pretty sure he was aware of this going into the job -
So try to attach an option. He's not going to get anything more than 1-year deal next year anyways. If you sign him to the pro-rated min this year and you can sign him for $3 mill next year, it's worth it, and I think that's perfect logical.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 26, 2013 -> 09:28 AM) Bears should sign that f***. I think you wait to see what the fall out is. Doesn't make much sense to sign him if he's spending the rest of his life behind bars

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 26, 2013 -> 09:11 AM) Do you think that spending part of his time as a DH would help with that? That's my hope with him, the Sox could use a DH after 2014 and hopefully 2015 is when we start seeing the first of the OF's in the minors (Trayce) arriving. I don't oppose the idea, but I don't think it would have much of an effect either way. Once he were to get into his late 30s, then I think you would need to see more of it, but as is, it doesn't matter either way. He never really gets hurt either, and this year it's been really, really fluky stuff. I think he'd be a strong bet for the Sox either way. I do think at some point he has to make the move from CF to LF because he doesn't have the arm to play RF. -
Oh, and those saying they're OK with Garcia for Reed, GTFO. At least when Joe Crede came up and the Sox thought they ahd their 3Bman of the future, he had put up great minor league numbers and won MVPs in the leagues he came up in. Avisail Garcia doesn't walk and hits for mediocre power. It's like Carlos Gomez, except without the speed, which might be nice in like 2017 or so, but not right now or the near future.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jun 26, 2013 -> 09:22 AM) Everytime I see that .gif, I lose my s***. It's just too funny. I think Danks is giving up a few bombs. He was obviously not ready to come back or is a shell of his former self. I'm going to go with the first rather than the latter. I think it's neither and it's that he just had a major shoulder surgery and you don't come back 100% from any surgery, let alone shoulder surgery. There are going to be kinks he needs to work though. Perfect year to do so. He worked through kinks in 2007, the Sox sucked, and everyone thought the world was ending. Then they won the division in 2008! Exact same thing is totally gonna happen.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 26, 2013 -> 09:10 AM) No, it is worse than that. Tebow spent his entire life playing QB, he may suck at the professional level but he has done it. Asking him to take on the job of a tight end in a offense that the Patriots run is a hilariously bad idea. Tebow could barely figure out special teams last season witht the Jets. The other thing regarding this is that he is going from a system that has run one of the worst offenses in the league for the last 5 years to an offense that has embraced creativity and fundamentals over the past 15 years. He's in better hands in New England. Nothing against Ryan coaching a defense, but his offenses have been s***.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 26, 2013 -> 09:13 AM) For a team like the Patriots not often...but isn't there the rule where you can stash a 3rd QB as listed on the practice squad and then still use him in a game if the #1/#2 guys both get hurt? I believe you can leave them as inactive on game days to allow someone else to suit up and if both of your top 2 options gets hurt, you can then go with your 3rd QB. If you have him suit up halfway through, you can no longer go back to your top 2 options.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 26, 2013 -> 08:57 AM) Not nearly as dumb as signing him and thinking he's a QB. Well, a 3rd qb. The backup's backup. How often does a 3rd qb play in a year?

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jun 26, 2013 -> 09:01 AM) At this point, I would lean toward Morales. Granderson seems to be on the decline and players whose top tool is speed tend to decline at a faster rate once they are in their 30's. Sure he still has pretty good power from the left side, but that is definitely aided by the little league park he plays in now. Morales is still in his prime, three years younger, and makes more consistent contact. I actually think athletic players tend to age well. I don't classify Granderson as a 40 homer guy, even though he did it twice recently, but he is a 25-30 homer guy with gap to gap power. The fear is that his bat speed will further slow down, which will further reduce his contact rate. More than anything else, that's my biggest fear regarding Curtis Granderson. -
Really, he's only 30 this year and he could realistically be effective for the next 5 years. There's no harm in trying to see if there's anything left.

QUOTE (Dunt @ Jun 25, 2013 -> 04:53 PM) I'm surprised to be honest. He has some of the best numbers in the minors. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 25, 2013 -> 04:55 PM) This is the thing you should remember with prospect lists. No matter how good someone performs...the guys making those lists play favorites. Not necessarily even on purpose; they go to see teams they believe are loaded and they like guys who others like. Some of it's favorites, some of it is a very low hit rate playing in a pitcher's park without an excellent K/9. I have high hopes for Johnson and think he'll be fine.

For 2 and a club option, I'll take Granderson, but does it have to be either/or? I'd take both at those deals. -
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 26, 2013 -> 08:29 AM) So, I guess Tebow is the starting TE We all joke about it, but in all actuality the Pats will try to bring in legit TE's. They might be able to toy with that idea at some point, but right now it's not going to happen.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 26, 2013 -> 12:16 AM) Man. I love sports but I don't even know how to react to your posts. I hope you are kidding with some of them and this is an Internet joke/troll type situation. Because your rage is scary. Personally I think it's a lack of class to criticize the dead so brutally, even on the anonymous internet. How many owners who are simply "bad" have books like this written about them? http://www.amazon.com/Career-Misconduct-Co...s/dp/0965631206 -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 25, 2013 -> 05:11 PM) Except Viciedo had cups of coffee in 2010, 2011 and more than a month of 2012. I love Dayan as much as the next poster here, but you can't even compare them except for 2 aspects....power, especially to the opposite field, and their respective arm strengths, although Puig definitely gets the nod there too. Puig just became the best LFer in baseball, kind of like the tallest midget. Kemp's back. Puig's also not the first guy to come up and hit like a bat out of hell. Give it some time before declaring him "the best left fielder in baseball." I mean seriously, lay off the hyperbole a little bit.

I'm saying there's absolutely no harm in bringing him in on a minimum deal. The dude can still throw. If he can control it to any extent, he's damn near unhittable.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 25, 2013 -> 04:40 PM) The problem is they either need to really spend or why bother? Just to be sort of respectable and not lose 100 games? What's the point of adding one or two of those guys and only losing 87-93 instead? LHer's pitching against Adam Dunn have been a pretty big deal that last 2 1/2 seasons, have they not? And we've already been eliminated this season before we've played more than 60-65% of our divisional games. You don't have to compete next year so much as you need to get pieces in place to begin to compete again. Granderson is older than I thought - 33 next year - so signing him to a 4 year deal seems a little crazy. Still, a 3 year deal with an option is a possibility and, though it has a chance to blow up ala Dunn, Granderson's athletic enough that he should still provide positive value throughout the course of the deal. -
Do you want Ventura back as manager next year?

Your Granderson reasoning is that he "can't hit lefties." Riddle me this, how many left handed starters are in the AL Central teams have left handed starters? This is off hand, but I think I count 5 - and 4 of them are on the White Sox. Sooo...that seems like a pretty good fit, doesn't it? Murphy could play anywhere, Kubel could play wherever, any of these guys can play wherever. The idea isn't to pidgeonhole these guys into these roles...most likely the Sox will never be connected with them. The idea is to show that there are free agents available that can be upgrades that can be had at relatively fair prices. The Sox will have money and the idea of them not spending any of it is absurd. -
Kind of a bummer Johnson didn't make it, but not a surprise.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jun 25, 2013 -> 03:41 PM) Reed has a nice track record closing out games. Castellanos has a blank resume with no past experience. If I'm Hahn, I'm asking for more to insulate against a total bust. You can ask for more if you want, I have no problem with that, but Castellanos is hitting well as a 21 year old in AAA. I get excited about hitters like that.
