  1. QUOTE(forrestg @ Dec 7, 2007 -> 06:58 PM) Erstadt equaled a grinder.. BA equaled a pretty boy in Ozzies eyes.. Erstadt had to run like crazy to get to the ball while BA took direct routes. Ba got sent down after about 19 at bats. I'm not arguing with anybody about his swing and the fact that needed to be improved.. But the whole 2007 white sox players, Dye, and Konerko, until the last couple of months seemed to be operating at the mendoza line. BA did hit well 2 out of the 6 months in 06 that shows he can do it. Texsox is right if we could use BA rather than spend 18 million better then maybe we could get a Sp like Haren and some relievers.. Sox will still have some question marks waiting at Spring training. How well can Crede play can BA look like a Major leaguer. Not to mention choosing SPS and a bullpen from all those players we sent down. The White Sox aren't getting Haren. Crede will be playing somewhere else.
  2. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Dec 8, 2007 -> 10:56 AM) Yes, although it seemed as though Shingo had gotten the kinks out when he got sat for Herm, who was just pitching out of his mind. It wasn't that Shingo was pitching all that badly when he got replaced - it was that Herm was pitching that well, no? Shingo had a 6.91 ERA in his first 14.1 IP
  3. QUOTE(rockren @ Dec 8, 2007 -> 08:59 AM) The past year and a half (post all star '06 and all of '07) Bedard: 269 Innings, 3.14 ERA, 304Ks, 1.15 WHIP, 18-10 Santana: 321 Innings, 3.08 ERA, 342Ks, 1.05 WHIP, 26-14 Your point about Johan being a lot better than Bedard......well yeah. Johan is a lot better than everyone else. I think the only SP you could put in Johan's class would be Peavy (as far as his '07 and his actual stuff) but even that is subjective. Johan had a down year for Johan in '07, but he probably had one of the best post all-star breaks ever in '06. But to say that Bedard isn't an ace is a joke. I'm sorry. I usually agree with you and your posts...but this comment floored me. Breaking down Bedard's career numbers just don't do him justice with the fact that ever since Mazzone had started to work with him.....he became lights out after a few months. Just ask Boston/NYY how good Bedard was last year. In 5 starts against those clubs he went 3-0 with an ERA of 2.05 in 35 innings of work striking out 34. If you're the kind of guy that needs to see years and years of success, then perhaps Bedard isn't worth liking. But give me the promise of the future over the glory of the past time anytime. Going into '08, Bedard is the 2nd best left hander in the game and is without question an ace. I need to see a healthy pitcher before I can declare him an ace. If you can't give me 200 innings, what kind of ace are you for me? Those 40 innings he misses are quite likely being replaced by an ERA of 5. Ace pitchers are dominant and durable. Bedard is most assuredly not durable.
  4. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 8, 2007 -> 01:04 PM) He's a free agent at the end of 2008. and he is going nowhere until that point in time; that's what I'm saying
  5. QUOTE(max power @ Dec 8, 2007 -> 02:17 PM) So they will have him for a year of healthiness. I can't imagine them thinking they might win this year. No, but he'd be a stopgap and a slight draw for fans who this year if they can acquire him for cheap and end up moving Mora. I don't see Crede in an Orioles uniform next year though, that's for sure.
  6. QUOTE(bulokis @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 06:11 PM) Hands down to the Tigers. That's what you call going for it all. Just looking at the lineup, adding Renteria, Miguel Cabrera and Willis were great moves. Detroit, in paper, looks like a lock for a playoff spot the next couple of years. and then god knows what beyond that...they are old
  7. QUOTE(heirdog @ Dec 7, 2007 -> 07:05 PM) Perhaps less valuable but still will command the type of haul that Santana is commanding now. If a Markakis deal is being compared to the Delmon Young deal that certainly Bedard and Santana can be compared. Except that Santana is quite clearly the best pitcher in the game, having won 2 Cy Youngs, a career 3.22 ERA, a career WHIP of 1.09, and 4 straight years of 219+ IP, whereas Bedard has struggled with injuries in the past and has NEVER ONCE gone over 200 innings in a season while owning a career ERA of 3.83 (good, but not Santana good) and a career 1.34 WHIP; he's a great #2 starter, but I wouldn't hold him much higher than that. Young's coming off his rookie year and while it's very possible he could turn into an absolute monster of a player, he isn't yet. Markakis is already a rising star in the league, and he still probably hasn't tapped his full potential. Using equals, greater than and less than symbols as ways of measurement... Markakis >= Young Bedard It's quite simple.
  8. QUOTE(3 BeWareTheNewSox 5 @ Dec 8, 2007 -> 12:48 AM) f*** Bonds, trade for Manny he is going nowhere quickly
  9. QUOTE(max power @ Dec 7, 2007 -> 05:55 PM) I am curious what would be realistic for roberts too. Why in the world would they want crede? To take a chance that he stays healthy; they aren't moving Roberts for a package centered around Crede.
  10. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Dec 8, 2007 -> 02:36 AM) I demand pictures I do actually demand pictures
  11. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 7, 2007 -> 03:05 PM) Buy a calendar, wite. This 'year' doesn't start for another 4 months. If the team still looks more or less like this in 4 or 5 months though, I'd agree, they are a long shot at best to compete for the post-season. How are the Sox going to compare to the Tigers this year offensively, defensively, pitching, and on the coaching? Who are logical replacements, and what effect would it have on the near (2-3 years) future roster? Basically, if the Sox strip the farm system to the absolute bare bottom for a desperation attempt at putting a competitive team on the field (meaning adding more pitching and a CFer), they'd still have to get lucky to win the division. Say, for example, you bring in Aaron Rowand, trade every minor leaguer along with Richar and Fields to the Orioles for Bedard and Roberts (if they'd even do it, which is questionable to begin with), you trade Uribe for scrap pieces; is that Sox team contending? Possibly, but they still aren't the favorites, there is no minor league depth, and the Sox essentially have to pray that Crede, Quentin, Dye, and Pierzynski all get back to their career norms/projections, that Danks and Floyd can last 360 innings or so putting up an ERA in the 5.00-5.25 region, that Contreras' back holds up throughout the entire season, and that the bullpen produces well. And KW has said that the White Sox aren't adding any more pitching, making that scenario even more highly unlikely. Trust me, I have all the calendar I need. I understand that there are 4 months left. But you rarely, if ever, see big moves made from February 1st on, and there are generally only slightly smaller moves made from January 15th and on; that leaves the Sox about a month to finish the offseason plan. I'd bet that the Sox current roster is pretty damn close to complete. I'd put 50/50 odds on the Sox bringing in another CFer, perhaps some help on the bench, Crede being dealt or non-tendered (someone should take a chance on him), the possibility of Uribe being traded, and then a bunch of minor league signings, and I'd imagine that's about it.
  12. QUOTE(PlunketChris @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 04:16 PM) My bad.. I forgot that it's already the 08 playoffs, and the Tigers, Yankees, Red Sox, and Angels are battling it out for their trips to the World Series. Obviously everyone else should have PLAYED THEIR YOUTH! Because in baseball, star power automatically puts you in the post-season.. i mean, look at the Colorado Rockies of 07... /green I'm going to be completely honest here and say that I *hate* when people use the "Oh, it's already the playoffs, why play the regular season" card, because it's stupid. Really, it's not the playoffs yet, there's a season to be played? No s***? Thanks! The Sox are not a contender this year; if you don't realize this now, then you are blind. They will not put a product on the field that will be considered a favorite or even a good team by nearly everyone on the planet. That doesn't mean they can't potentially be a good team if the planets align and a meteor hits the earth and etc etc what not else. All I'm saying is that playing Pablo puts the Sox in no better of a position this year than Richar does, and Richar gives you hope for the future, where Pablo gives you none. And by the way, let's look at the Colorado Rockies...the team that scored the 2nd most amount of runs in the NL last year and put up a 4.32 ERA, which was good for middle of the pack, and beyond that, had a bullpen that put up an ERA of 3.85 for the year, which is outstanding. Thus, the Rockies were a damn good team, and the Sox don't have near the talent level the Rockies did.
  13. QUOTE(heirdog @ Dec 7, 2007 -> 12:37 PM) If it does nothing for us in 08, then you spin Bedard for stud prospects....likely the Yankees if the Red Sox get Santana. Or the Red Sox if the Yanks get him and either one if neither gets him. If we can turn Fields, Danks, DLS, Sweeney and Anderson into 1 yr of Bedard (10 more wins than Danks in 08), Markakis, Melky Cabrera, Phil Hughes and Horne, I am fine with that (or replace with Ellsbury, Lowrie and Lester). He is going to be less valuable in one year. The Sox are not winning anything this year that they would win with Bedard. Thus, the package of prospects you are going to get is not going to be nearly as good as the one you are giving up. It's a pointless trade in that regard. The Sox are better off trading away pieces or keeping the current team together and adding a free agent CFer than they are trading a big package for a starting pitcher who is going next year or the year after.
  14. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2007 -> 10:55 AM) His splits are already in this thread. Against LHP: .191 .291 .234 .525 those are damned lies
  15. QUOTE(heirdog @ Dec 7, 2007 -> 11:59 AM) So it would take Fields, Gio, Danks, DLS, Sweeney and Anderson to get Bedard? If we can pull Gio out or get Markakis added, then I might still be fine with that. But from Angelos' history, our package would probably be laughed at as he would want even more. What does Eric Bedard do in the next 2 years for the Chicago White Sox that would make them a good enough team to be a favorite to win the division going into the season? Then, and only then, do you make a package that big for anybody. If you make that trade for Bedard, have only Gio in the system, lose Crede next year, and Bedard, Dye, and Thome the year after that, you are looking at about a 7 year rebuilding period.
  16. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 09:13 PM) And I have a lot of things in common with Belichick that I won't get into. $10 on having never smiled in your life
  17. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 10:49 PM) If you were talking about anyone else... But this is Willie, wite. im sorry guys
  18. QUOTE(klaus kinski @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 10:48 AM) Why couldnt he play 2b and lead off? Because Richar is better than him. And, honestly, why on earth would you even ask that question? What value does Willie Harris bring to the team that Danny Richar does not? What hope for the future does Harris bring that Richar does not? WHY ON EARTH DO PEOPLE WANT A NEW 2BMAN WHEN THE SOX ARE GOING TO BE TERRIBLE ANYWAYS? This is what gets to me about this site; why on earth would you search for a veteran replacement over the young player when neither is clearly superior or inferior to the other? It appears the Darin Erstad effect has taken over all of Soxtalk.
  19. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 03:19 PM) Excuse me while I mourn the passing of our AA bullpen... For f***'s sake, I really don't know why anyone gives a s*** about it if we don't pick anything. Maybe I'm not all that broken up about a guy that spent three years in WS. I like this version of Heads
  20. QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 06:28 PM) does that seem like a World Series Championship team??? A .215 hitting LF, a .230 hitting 2B and a 3rd/4th/5th starter with ERA's of 5.57, 5.50 and 5.27. As far as I can tell, there's only one person who has ever given the notion that it was remotely close to that. And he kind of have as position of power within the White Sox organization.
  21. I think about recreating this thread every time I look in the mirror; that is, wite meets wite
  22. QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 04:33 PM) but it's quite obvious from the meetings that Reinsdorf will not spend the money to keep our premier players or sign others. Jesus Christ, so Mark Buehrle and Paul Konerko are just absolutely garbage players aren't they? Jermaine Dye is not solid? Or were you just asleep when those moves happened?
  23. Hunter and Andruw Jones also both play in a much tougher position to fill. Compare Magglio to the 2/$22 that Dye got, and it brings it within reason a bit.
