2007 AL Central Catch-All Thread
QUOTE(BearSox @ Apr 11, 2007 -> 05:25 PM) Johan is one of the few players I wouldn't mind the team offering a 8 years, 180 million dollar contract to. not getting him. If the market is similar to how it is now come 2008-09, I seriously see him getting $30 million. And I am completely serious about that. What I do see happening is the market dying down a bit. Johan will still set the mark for most money on a year by year basis, but it'll be like $26 mill.

2007 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Apr 11, 2007 -> 07:11 PM) I actaully do care. I have been able to see both his starts, and he is a blast to watch. This game is a fantastic showcase of two of the best pitchers in the game. He's fun to watch pitch. It's the hype machine that's been way over the top. An hour long SportsCenter at 5, and 30+ minutes of the show was dedicated to Matsuzaka.

Bobby Jenks
100% effective is the dominance Bobby is capable of. He has the stuff to be a top 3 closer in baseball. As of right now, he'll be a satisfactory closer and not much more. Without that fastball, he loses consistency, and last night is the perfect example of that. He did that multiple times last year too. The Cleveland game rings vividly in my mind - wasn't it like 4 straight doubles or something ridiculous like that? With a fastball around 89-92, he'll be bad, with no further explanation really needed With a fastball around 92-95, he'll be 3.50, 1.30, and a good K rate With a fastball around 94-97, he'll be 2.70, 1.15, and a great K rate With a fastball around 96-100, he'll be almost untouchable, only being hit on fastballs left low in the zone. That last line is 100%, and that's pretty much what he was down the stretch in 2005. A pitch Boone hit that year was a fastball low (though I seem to recall Vizcaino having a good piece of hitting on the fastball up in game 2).

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Apr 11, 2007 -> 07:20 PM) Jenks has MUCH better stuff than Garland. Now that he has control of more than 2 pitches, he doesnt need to rely on 100 mph heat. He has a cutter, slider, change, curve, backup slider, and a little sinker. Yeah, I realize Jenks has better stuff. He also has a screw in his elbow, and a more violent delivery. Without a good fastball - ie 94-97 - Jenks will never be 100% effective, regardless of secondary stuff.

4/10 Games
QUOTE(BearSox @ Apr 11, 2007 -> 11:51 AM) Well, only 1 or 2, but they are very unlikely. Like maybe he was late on a fastball right down the middle, but I doubt it. on a double, maybe he does get lucky and it slices down the line. On a homer? No, he went with that.

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
Nice win. Jenks gets a save and it helps his psyche; not so much his arm. Hopefully the Sox put up 15 tomorrow (and don't give up 18). And Buehrle manned the f*** up, 17 of his last 18 and like 20 of 22. That's mowing them down.

UNC's Hansbrough, Lawson returning
Yeah, they're my favorites right now to win it next year. They were literally like 2 field goals away from going to the Final Four, and now they're returning the same crew with another year of seasoning. They are going to look outstanding going into the tournament.

Why is Brian Anderson on 25 man roster?
Jenks did suck last night, and that's a given. It doesn't change the fact that a better arm may have gotten Bradley at the plate, or a better fielder does come up with that ball in LF. That ball hit Podsednik in the head, and it didn't bounce off the wall first. Pods looked panicked in LF when that ball was hit.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Apr 11, 2007 -> 02:36 PM) EVERYONE cares he blew the save. This is soxtalk, he goes 1,2,3 nobody says a thing. This is his typical velocity in April, 90-92. I dont know how many more times he and the org needs to say it. Garland was sitting at 88 mph on his fastballl last night, how come nobody is talking about HIS drop. because 1. Garland looked good 2. Garland's game doesn't rely almost entirely upon his velocity 3. Garland might actually be better with a little less velocity and in case you hadn't noticed, kudos do go out to those that perform well. It's much easier to talk about worry than it is comfort.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Apr 11, 2007 -> 02:47 AM) Using the formula I came up with I get the following numbers: Pujols: 772 Ichiro: 388 Erstad: 264 Eckstein: 264 Rowand: 264 Byrnes: 251 Podsednik: 231 Mathews Jr.: 206 Ozuna: 201 I figure the ultimate Grinder number is set at 264 with anyone within 40 points either way of that number being considered a Grinder. The further away from 264 you get the less of a Grinder you are. yessssssssssssssssssss I feel better now.

McCarthy Watch
QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 08:44 AM) Not to mention the lefty that was traded for Riske that is the Red Sox set-up man. yeah but he has bounced around the league quite a bit. He was just a minor league free agent, non-roster invitee who had no room on the Sox at all.

Starting Pitching
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Apr 11, 2007 -> 01:52 AM) Our pitching has been awsome. Our offense needs to get their head out of their ass. We cannot be up only 1-0 when Gaudin is pitching. Thats a joke. I'll take 1-0 against Gaudin. Honestly, I will. What is NOT acceptable is runner on 3rd, 0 outs, and no runs. That is unacceptable. That game should have been 2-0 at the absolute minimum going into the 9th. I'm honestly more pissed about that than Podsednik's adventures.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Apr 11, 2007 -> 01:47 AM) I suppose this leaves Anderson as someone destined to have no more than 150 AB's. If he considers Podsednik's defense this first week as "good," then it'll take 5 months for doubt to creep into his mind. Erstad such as hell isn't going anywhere, and Ozuna is a "Muela" -- Spanish translation of 'grinder.' I was informed during spring training that Ozuna would rank quite low on the grinder scale. Kalapse please help me on this one, PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE kthx

Chris Young does something good (while not on the sox, f'in kenny)
QUOTE(rangercal @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 10:47 PM) yeah no s***. We are debating this and player B doesn't even have RBI's. So you'll take Chris Young over Jose Reyes?

Starting Pitching
I actually do feel really good about this team right now. It's still up to the pen, because I just don't see how the middle of the lineup can keep hitting as s***ty as it has thus far. That is, of course, so long as the pitching remains a constant throughout the year instead of just the first two months, like last year.

IS BA trade bait
QUOTE(effectivelywild @ Apr 11, 2007 -> 12:10 AM) I'm not sure BA is trade bait. I'm not sure he's a bench player, really. As far as I can tell, he's Ozzie's own personal trophy b****, there to demonstrate what happens to skilled players who fall out of his graces. what right do you have to say Brian Anderson is skilled, he hasn't proven that at the big league level yet (cuz he of course has not had the proper opportunity to do so)
