Since there is so much discussion on it....

QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Mar 27, 2007 -> 12:44 PM) Dude, it's that 5% that makes ordinary extraordinary. so should we start saying give 105%? I'm confused -
QUOTE(caulfield12 @ Mar 27, 2007 -> 12:30 PM) But you could do the same thing for Jermaine Dye or Frank Thomas over similar lead-up periods to their 2006 seasons and nothing would predict what they accomplished, particularly Thomas. Erstad is still relatively young...I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and side with OG and KW on this one. so Jermaine Dye's .274 31 86 .333/.512/.845 gave no indication that he may be rebounding from his injuries? Or his 104 homers after 2000 and before 2006 in about 4 seasons worth of work? Or his consistently increasing OPS over the past 4 years? Or his career OPS of 110? None of that? Darin Erstad's OPS is decreasing, his average is decreasing, his power is decreasing, he's becoming seemingly more injury prone, he doesn't make as much contact as he used to, he doesn't walk as much, and he's losing speed. Now, what of that suggests to you that he'll rebound to his 2000 form? Darin Erstad and Jermaine Dye comparisons needed to stop in January.

haha, no, let Tony K stay. The only enjoyable part of those games was when Tony K would just completely embarrass the hell out of Theisman. oh wait, Theisman's gone. whatever, get rid of Kornheiser, or keep him, I don't care. I really like Kornheiser a lot, so I'll listen to him talk about anything.
-
I dunno, how's your starting pitching and OF situation? If you need K's and WHIP, and have tons of power already, I say take it.
-
Edwin Encarnacion If you need a decent 3Bman, he's a guy that could put up a solid average, good power, good run production, and double digit steals. Tony has probably heard me say that a time or two.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 27, 2007 -> 12:36 AM) They'd rather spend their late 1st round picks on safe pitchers who will travel through the system quickly and hold solid trade value then later trade off these meh starters for failed former top 15 picks who have great arms but s*** control and mechanics then allow the major league coaching staff to fix their mechanics and refine their control turning them into quality major league arms. I'm not so sure this method has ever even been put to use by the organization but it seems to be the plan. As much as I have slurped Floyd, he has been pretty much mediocre as hell so far. I haven't been able to watch him pitch - something about not working and being in school and $120 is a lot of money and beer - but from what it sounds like, his stuff is OK, but he's been conservative as hell and is nibbling. That's the mentality that needs to be changed at AAA. If it's also mechanics, whatever, get that fixed too. Guys with stuff that are that close aren't bad choices to make, but you should never make them cornerstone pieces of deals, like as with the Garcia trade. The Sox should have gotten him for someone like Egbert or Haeger, not a guy who was solid, though unspectacular and declining last year in Freddy Garcia. Thornton, however, was a brilliant pickup, and what I've said above is not to say Floyd can't become a back end or even front end starter; it just means you can't put all your eggs into the basket of a guy who had a 4.23 ERA in AAA last year. I know the Sox got Gio back as well, but right now he is easily the biggest boom or bust prospect in the entire Sox system. That's not exactly the type of trade you want for a middle of the rotation starting pitcher.

BUMPED::::::Toby Hall Possibly out for the season

QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Mar 27, 2007 -> 12:33 AM) Another possible rumor on MLBTradeRumors...TIFWIW. Teams are scouting Ryan Doumit and Humberto Cota as possible backup catcher options. One club with a new opening: the White Sox, who unfortunately may have lost Toby Hall for the season with a labrum tear. D'oh. KW has dealt with Littlefield a couple of times before, on the Todd Ritchie and Rob Mackowiak deals. Littlefield is one of few GMs who has gotten the best of Williams in a deal. one deal...he got the better of one deal. Matt Guerrier was a real keep for Pittsburgh, and while the Sox did have to suffer through Mackowiak's mediocre defense in CF, he is a better value than a left handed reliever coming off a season in which he had a 1.70+ WHIP. -
QUOTE(GreenSox @ Mar 26, 2007 -> 10:39 PM) If we are obsessed with velocity, why do we draft control pitchers, not stuff pitchers, with our high draft choices? they can't develop them for s***
-
QUOTE(SoxAce @ Mar 26, 2007 -> 11:33 PM) Damn, that looks like a decent deal but for our # 1 AND Briggs? Makes you think. You're losing Briggs anyways. The most you're going to get for him is like a 2nd round pick, maybe a late 1st. To get a top 10 pick for your 1st and a LB who is unhappy and wants out? Highway robbery
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 26, 2007 -> 10:12 PM) I know you're kidding and all but I almost hope this is the case and he is throwing 56 miles per hour in side sessions simply because of the comedic value involved in such a f***up. best thing since Berry-Barry QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Mar 26, 2007 -> 10:13 PM) Just like how the next Roy Halladay is not in our rotation right now? yes
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Mar 26, 2007 -> 10:01 PM) I see where you are coming from but I absolutely hate how BA has been handled by this team. We honestly gave him 0 shot to succeed and if he is a back up here, he'd obviously be a great defensive replacement but it almost signals to me that the organization has completely given up on him as a starter. I love to make horrible comparisons, so I'll make another - Chase Utley didn't start until his 3rd year in the league.

I'm wondering if it's possible to get Anderson 400 ABs this year. Or atleast 300.

QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 26, 2007 -> 09:37 PM) Molina hit around .225 in AA last year. Considering the quality of lefties he'd have to face, I'll predict he wouldn't hit over .140 in the majors. It's times like this I wish we had an extra few million to be able to acquire players when injuries occur (anyone know where we can find a few millions dollars being wasted on our roster?). you're talking about Jermaine Dye, aren't you? you can't sneak anything past me -
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 26, 2007 -> 02:19 PM) That seems to happen a lot to knucklers, no? That is definitely something to consider. Also, I wonder what that spread is for other pitchers at the AAA level. those are his major league numbers, so they're a little misleading, but his UERA in Charlotte was still about 70 points higher than his ERA. In comparison, Gavin Floyd's was 23 points higher (4.23 opposed to 4.46), while John Danks' was almost a full run higher (ERA of 4.24 in the minors, UERA of 5.21). It really depends, but that type of trend does occur quite a bit with other knucklers, you are right. Tim Wakefield - 4.30 ERA 4.92 UERA Steve Sparks - 4.88 ERA 5.46 UERA Tom Candiotti - 3.73 ERA 4.25 UERA Wilbur Wood - 3.24 ERA 3.79 UERA Which is just part of the reason I really don't like Haeger all that much. If he had value, I think he would have been gone by now, because they are just far too inconsistent to be counted on, even as a number 5 starter. It's possible he'll be a very durable and versatile pitcher over his career, but I just don't think it's with the Sox.

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Mar 26, 2007 -> 04:02 PM) Which doesn't make a lot of sense. this It's not Ozzie's fault Hall got hurt. It's Ozzie's fault that Hall was in a position to get hurt the way he did. Whether you blame him or not, or how much of an effect this has on the team is a completely different story. If Hall were playing 1B this year at any time, this would have been in a hell of a lot of trouble. -
QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Mar 26, 2007 -> 04:02 PM) I've suggested this elsewhere and people were unimpressed, but my solution to the backup cathcing situation is...Aaron Rowand. mlbtraderumors today posted that a trade was getting closer. You know Aaron would do anything for the team -- he'd get behind the plate and sacrifice his body to stop a Contreras forkball from becoming a wild pitch. Just imagine him running headlong into the backstop chasing a foul ball. It'd be awesome. Ken Williams added "He didn't come up through our system as a catcher, but we really like how he has handled it in the majors. I think he could be a starter for us in a few years."

How many Sox games are you planning on attending?
witesoxfan replied to Rex Kickass's topic in Pale Hose Talk
175 ... no, in all seriousness, hopefully 3 in Minnesota -
QUOTE(WCSox @ Mar 26, 2007 -> 03:17 PM) I'm not sure about him never losing that athleticism, but I completely agree about him having value as a contact hitter until the day that he retires. He's Japan's answer to Tony Gwynn. My concern is that the stats that he put up in his prime and his celebrity status in Japan will drive up his asking price to an unreasonable level. I'm surprised that Ichiro hasn't played more CF in Seattle. Of course, I realize that his cannon arm makes him a very good fit for RF, but his freakish speed and very solid anticipation on fly balls would be better-used in CF, IMO. Mike Cameron was a good defensive CF, but is Jeremy Reed really a better option? Or has Seattle just been lacking a strong-armed option in RF in the post-Buhner era? I think they intend on using him in CF this year

QUOTE(HeGone33 @ Mar 26, 2007 -> 03:15 PM) Can anyone list the backup catchers in our division and their numbers vs. righties and lefties? I'd feel a little better if we were on the same level as the other in the division with a potential Wiki backup. I still does suck though cause Hall probably would have been the best backup in the division and we lose that edge. Minnesota Joe Mauer - is a god Mike Redmond - .443/.467/.543/1.010 vs LHP (yeah, that is 31 for 70 against LHP) Detroit IRod - .719 OPS vs RHP, .891 vs LHP Vance Wilson - .326/.356/.488/.844 vs LHP Cleveland Victor - .290/.373/.430/.803 vs LHP, .332/.402/.486/.888 vs RHP Kelly Shoppach - .314/.368/.629/.997 vs LHP (in like 35 PAs) Royals LaRue - sucked last year, but had a .720 OPS against LHP in limited playing time Buck - more homers against LHP than RHP in about half the PAs It's kind of important to have a good catching duo. -
QUOTE(WCSox @ Mar 26, 2007 -> 02:56 PM) I would've liked to have him five years ago. A huge chunk of Ichiro's value is his speed and I don't foresee him being able to steal 40-50 bases per season over even most of the duration of his contract. Methinks that we'd end up over-paying for him. No, Ichiro's value comes from the fact that he's a career .331 hitter. His speed and defense are just added bonuses. And if Kenny Lofton has taught me anything, it's that guys who know how to steal bases will always steal bases regardless of how old they become. Ichiro keeps himself in magnificent shape, and he has gotten ridiculously good at stealing. I imagine he will remain a 20-30 SB threat until the day he walks away from the game.

QUOTE(knightni @ Mar 26, 2007 -> 01:08 PM) Oswalt is an injury waiting to happen. A-Rod in an off year gets you 30hr 100rbi. Barmes will be up with the club or traded by July. I doubt Oswalt gets hurt in the next 12 months though. I agree he is, but he's a good enough bet to be good this year and next. And hell, perhaps you even hang onto him this year and trade him at the beginning of next year to some guy who thinks he'll be good, and you get a highway robbery. Also, Rowand will hate me for this, but Garza could very easily be the next Liriano. Not as in a sub-2.00 ERA, but just watch out for him...perhaps a 3.50 ERA, K's up the ass, and a few wins. I also don't know why no one has mentioned keeping Bay. He is a great 5X5 player, what with his 30-40 homers, double digit steals, solid average and great run production.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 26, 2007 -> 10:48 AM) Hell no they didn't. I only got 3 of 4, and still control my own destiny in my 2 money pools and my pool with friends (who are not dumb). Almost everybody was a victim of either UNC, Texas A&M, Memphis, or Kansas (or in my case, Oregon and their ice cold 3 point shot yesterday). So in other words, give yourself more credit sir. It seemed like a popular pick to me. I am of course happy, but those were like the 4 hottest teams going in. Well, except UCLA, but they had a pretty easy road to the final four, not really having to face an elite team until the Elite 8. It was kind of cool, though, that I only got 4/8 in the Elite 8, but I got 4/4 in the Final Four. I think I should win some money for that or something.
