Feels like we’re just jumping over this still lengthy transition period to the time when there’s a new stadium and a blank checkbook like the Phillies or Padres. We already know Meidroth and Antonacci likely can’t stay together in the lineup, and future lineup space for Carlson Thome Prosek and Weingartner could be limited as well. There’s definitely a legit case to be made for splitting the theoretical Mune extension $$$ two or three ways between Vargas Colson and Roch. Heck, we might be less than another season away from saying the same about Peters, although that’s certainly much less of a priority.

Colson Cholowsky Bonemer Vargas is a good enough infield to more than make up the difference offensively. It’s also a better fielding one at three spots. If you’re going to extend Vargas instead of Murakami, it has to be considered. Ofc in a perfect world they sign Mune Vargas and Colson to long term extensions…and believe that the outcome will be much different from Moncada/Robert/Jimenez. Or it could just as easily be Cholowsky Mune Vargas…if you’re worried about Colson’s back holding up over time. From what we (supposedly) know só far, Vargas hasn’t expressed an abundant amount of interest in signing an extension, but it always comes down to $$$.

They’ve also never gone down to the very bottom or at least 29th payroll in the majors, só they’d still be adding at least $40 million… With their current personnel, it does make sense to at least think about moving him for pitching, if they’re not trading at the deadline or going into the lockout period in October after the WS. It likely wouldn’t happen until one year from now. Feels like a 50/50 proposition whether he stays atm.

You basically need to have Bonemer and Cholowsky in reserve to make up for the loss of Mune. Unless the new CBA mandates a $120-135 million salary floor and they pretty much have no choice but to invest the long term money into him.
