  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 05:43 PM) Beckham = exact same boat after last season. If he's not traded this year he's a non-tender candidate as well. He's doing even worse on defense this year and he's still barely putting up a .700 OPS. There's no reason to keep him as a 3rd year arb candidate next year. That and the fact that Carlos Sanchez, Micah Johnson, Marcus Semien, Tyler Saladino and Leury Garcia can all play his position. And DeAza's a waste of salary this year as well since there's no way he's in the long-term plans. Whereas we have Danks, a 29 year old Michael Taylor (keep reminding everyone Viciedo's still only 25), Sierra and Tuiasasopo to replace Dayan. Not to mention that we have to replace Dunn as well...with who???
  2. We're not already wasting $4-5 million on Beckham and DeAza??? C'mon. If you throw in Keppinger, Downs (another similar contract) and Paulino, that's a lot of payroll misallocation. As someone said, if you subtract Dunn and Viciedo (and maybe Ramirez), who in God's name is going to provide power next year? Matt Davidson, who has already struck out 100 times in Charlotte? A GM that's going to spend that kind of money on Downs and Lindstrom and then dump Viciedo for nothing isn't going to last very long. Hahn's smarter than that, especially with the dearth of power hitting threats around baseball today.
  3. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 05:33 PM) Kazmir and Buerhle were less deserving than Sale, but Kluber was snubbed also and is definitely more deserving. It's that respect issue with managers always giving the nod to players from perennial playoff-contending teams over the Klubers and Richards of the world, who are enjoying their first unqualified seasons of success. Unless it's someone like Felix Hernandez. But there's no way that ASG manager is going to snub Scherzer...doesn't happen.
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 05:30 PM) That's awesome Neshek made it after what he's gone through. I always confuse him with Cishek, haha. He's the one who used to bedevil us with the Twins and has a funky delivery and has gone through a horrendous series of injuries and persevered, right?
  5. What else is new? No respect. With that said, in this type of throwawy/development/rebuilding season, it's not the worst thing in the world for Chris to rest and relax for three days.
  6. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 10:25 AM) Don't forget drinking crappy beer. But Pitch Perfect is awesome, how dare you. That scene where do they "riff-off" with the four singing groups together in the old swimming pool is a classic. Plus, that kid from Workaholics makes me laugh in that movie whenever he does practically anything his character is so over the top.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 12:38 PM) I still have not seen the Yankees show any willingness to give back the 2009 world series trophy that they won with Captain Cheeseburger. Well, then by this definition, the Greinke deal isn't a great one for LA unless they win a World Series, for example. I'd say, until now, it has been a good/fair contract for both sides, but I'm not going to argue it's any kind of bargain exactly when it's $147 million dollars.
  8. QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 09:01 AM) re Dank and Beckman, I am all for keeping them if we can not get good value for them. JR is faithful to his players and coaches. I really wonder if the sox org had discuss moving Dank with other team or was this a msg board wishful thinking. It does ZERO good to hold onto Dunn since he's going to leave at the end of the year as a FA. Other than protecting Konerko from having to play everyday, there's no reason to keep him...you could even argue it would be better to see what they have in Michael Taylor offensively. Save that money for next year...if they really wanted to, they could always bring Adam back in 2015, but the odds of that happening are very low.
  9. Yeah, for some reason I was thinking Danks was off the books at the end of 2015. It's actually 2016. Still see more upside to trading him now, but it all depends on whether Cooper et al think he can retain his recent success instead of erratically bouncing around in the 4.5-5.25 ERA range for the next 2 1/2 seasons. If he's going to be a 4/5 type of starter, then you obviously are better off dumping the salary. As has been noted over and over again, the peripherals don't necessarily back up the quality starts and ERA numbers the last 6 weeks.
  10. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 03:19 PM) Saw the game on he Mariner's gamecast. Their announcers were in awe of the Sox Their 15-105 hitting performance which should have resulted in a series sweep?
  11. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 09:39 AM) Or maybe there wasn't even talks to begin with....Or the Sox were asking for "too much" because they don't really need to deal him. On the other hand, what does holding onto Danks accomplish? We're QUITE unlikely to be competing for the division next year if we trade Ramirez...the other alternative is to spend a ton of money on catching, bullpen, the back-end of the rotation, at least one outfield position and DH. Even if that "ton" of money was there to spend, there aren't enough attract FA targets (especially at catcher) to make chasing after a select group of players worthwhile from a cost-benefit perspective in terms of intelligent resource allocation.
  12. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 09:28 AM) No it's really not. It's the same as a Sox fan expecting anything out of Tyler Danish and Spencer Adams. The Cubs have guys like Eloy Jimenez and Gleiber Torres that you could compare to Micker Adolfo but I never did that. Except I don't expect anything out of Danish other than a reliever (for the moment)...same with Beck...and Adams is way too raw to project until he's had 2-3 years under his belt. Baez, however, has severe questions about his long-term outlook not just as an infielder — he could probably do with a move to third base or right field himself — but as a major league player in general. He has been absolutely unimpressive for Triple-A Iowa this season, barely managing a .730 OPS in the hitter-friendly PCL, and he’s already struck out 103 times in 317 plate appearances. It’s not only sensible to have a fallback plan in Russell in case Baez turns out to be unable to make the leap in the way which Cubs fans are expecting, but it’s good to have redundancy like this in general. The only issue, of course, is that the Cubs still have no young pitching of note in the organization at or above A-ball outside of C.J. Edwards and Pierce Johnson, and neither of those two is anywhere near as impressive as the array of position player prospects Hoyer has drafted, signed, or dealt for. This is less of an issue if the new and improved Jake Arrieta is a legitimate ace at the top of the Chicago rotation, but we probably won’t know whether he’s just having one good season or whether he’s figured out something sustainable until sometime in 2015 (barring any earlier regression in his command and stuff).
  13. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 09:31 AM) Thank you. Abreu is the most recent spending and in fact it was jerry that pushed the offer higher. Jerry has also shown he's willing to spend money extending players as well. The jerry is cheap comments really do get old. Generous contract extensions to Magglio Ordonez, Paul Konerko, Jose Contreras, Mark Buehrle (but not twice), Jermaine Dye, AJ, etc.
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 09:23 AM) One of the main guys in the Danks for McCarthy deal is going to Yanks. McCarthy traded for Nuno. There you go. Even though the Yankees would SEEM to need a left-hander with the subtraction of CC Sabathia from the equation, they'd still prefer to take a smaller risk of $5 million on McCarthy vs. roughly $20 million for Danks in salary.
  15. QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 09:03 AM) Come 2016 or thereabouts, they'll sign a couple guys to mega deals. You can't tell me that they won't have the cash. Name one of those $100+ million megadeals for a starting pitcher that the signing team would repeat if they had 20/20 hindsight over the last 10-15 years??? Tanaka's about the only one, and you probably won't be able to say that 3-4 years down the line when he inevitably breaks down or has TJ surgery.
  16. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 09:11 AM) Lots of real stupid going on in this thread. I don't understand it. The Cubs have like a $30 million payroll. I think they will spend a little this offseason and you will see Bryant, Baez, Alcantara, and probably even Russell at some point next season. The Cubs don't have any pitching thing is false as well. They don't have immediate front of the rotation pitching. They have a ton opt depth though. The Cubs don't have a Carlos Rodon but I'd argue that they have more pitching depth than the White Sox do in their system. The Cubs already had : CJ Edwards, Pierce Johnson, Duane Underwood, Kyle Hendricks, Paul Blackburn, and Tyler Skulina to name a few. In the draft they added: Stinnett, Dylan Cease, Carson Sands, and Justin Steele. They also have a couple late inning type relievers in Arodys Vizcaino and Armando Rivero at AAA Iowa. Not to mention the young bullpen arms in their ML bullpen. The big name hitting prospects are the reason why they have the #1 system in baseball but the pitching in the system is underrated in my opinion. Counting on those guys is just like a Sox fan expecting anything out of Micker Zapata. High school arms are notoriously difficult to project. Keep in mind, Straily's gone through something of an Erik Johnson season of his own. His velocity has mysteriously dipped from the 90's to around 88. Until they show the ability or willingness to sign/trade for/acquire one of the BIG FOUR (Scherzer/Lester/Shields/Price), nobody's going to buy into the Cubs Kool Aid. If you subtract Danks from the Sox rotation, they're in virtually the same place payroll-wise, but I'm sure the White Sox aren't going to be willing to give up a $100+ million contract to one of those four pitchers regardless.
  17. QUOTE (hammerhead johnson @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 08:37 AM) Great trade. They're working on a 90s Indians or 90s Rangers type lineup. Don't be jealous, now. When it was mentioned that some might see the trade as overkill, the A's beefing up an already beefy starting staff, Beane said, "We felt like we needed two guys. Listen, one of the things I remember in 2002, when we were in that 20-game (win) streak ... is that one of the advantages we had ... was that when we ran our starting pitcher out there every single night, that starting pitcher had a very good chance of beating the other guy. When you put that kind of synchronicity together, the team can get on a roll. ... "Also, you're assuming that nobody else in the current rotation has any sort of injuries or any setback. ... We created depth by virtue of this move, and we're only halfway through the season. I just don't think in this game you can expect that every single guy from this point forward's going to start every five days, no hiccup." Beane is hiccup-proofing his club, and he's not done. He would like to shore up second base. But he can't top this trade. When Beane's career is over and the old rock 'n' roll GM releases his greatest-hits album, the title might be "Samardzija." Is it the best trade he's ever swung? I'll let you know in October. www.sfgate.com/sports (Ostler) Funny you mention two teams that never won the World Series!!! The Cubs don't have the money to pay Scherzer/Lester/Shields/Price. And maybe trading Starlin Castro will get them a frontline starter, but there are definitely no guarantees with prospects, as the White Sox learned in 2000-2001 when they had the #1 farm system in baseball. The majority of players who would end up leading the White Sox to the World Series title, other than Buehrle and Garland, Crede and Rowand...would end up coming in from other organizations (AJ, Pods, Hermanson, Iguchi, Dye, Everett, etc.) We used some of our better prospects like Jeremy Reed and Olivo to obtain Freddy Garcia, but the Cubs aren't likely to win it with a team of all youthful hitting prospects. They're going to have to pick the right players to trade (Castro, Baez or Russell...Rizzo or Schwarber....McKinney, Soler, Alcantara, Almora, etc.) The biggest problem is the pitching staff and lack of a great catcher that can allow the team to be set up in a similar way to the captain's role that Yadier Molina has assumed with the Cardinals. The Pirates have Marte/McCutcheon/Polanco and lots of young pitching, and the Reds and Brewers aren't just going to up and disappear, either. Injuries to Edwards and P.Johnson haven't helped matters. At least we have a superstar pitcher in Sale under contract through 2018 and a very solid #2 in Jose Quintana also under team control through our contention window. We also have one of the top five hitters in baseball under contract through the prime of his career in Jose Abreu. (Kris Bryant MIGHT be that player, but time will tell.)
  18. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 07:55 AM) Always a good idea in the 9th with this talented, experienced bullpen. And who wouldn't pull one of the best hitters in MLB out of a tie game for a pinch runner! Not to mention ending the chance for him to extend his hitting streak. Oh, well.
  19. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 05:27 AM) ........Signing Dunn, Rios, and Peavy. I think you mean taking on Rios' salary/contract obligations. Albert Belle. Manny Ramirez for $4 million/one month, haha. The offer to Tanaka.
  20. http://www.sfgate.com/athletics/article/A-...ame-5602273.php How'd you like to be Bob Melvin breaking the news to Tommy Milone that he's going back to AAA after going 6-0 with a 2.62 ERA over his last 11 starts??
  21. Things have changed a lot in the past few weeks. Beckham, Ramirez and Dunn are all slumping pretty badly, with Dunn rumored to have an injured hand/wrist according to DJ...who was wondering why he was even playing in Saturday's game. DeAza's value has essentially been driven down to nothing by his putrid results the first two months of the season. A lot of the value that we could have gotten out of Putnam and Belisario has also been wiped out by their each being forced into the closer's role. Nobody has succeeded in the 9th, so the idea of flipping Lindstrom/Jones/Belisario and now Putnam in July is pretty much dead. This comes on top of the failure to get anything of significance for Floyd and Crain last year. So now we're left with: 1)Ramirez 2)Danks....has to go because of peripherals returning to mean and to avoid the 4 lefties again with Rodon 3)Viciedo 4)Beckham 5)Noesi...likely to stay as there's simply nobody else for the back end of the rotation for the remainder of the season, especially if Danks is traded and no AA/AAA pitching comes back in return
  22. Verlander, never known for his sense of humility, says the A's/Cubs trade is all about competing with the Tigers... https://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-leag...-171341939.html Freep Tigers @freeptigers Follow Verlander on A's and trade: "If they want to win a World Series, they are envisioning that they have to go through us." Tigers have eliminated the A's the last two years, etc.

  24. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 05:31 PM) Great last sentence. Vissarion appears to be very 'gentle.' His talks to the people are in hushed tones. I did read something about his traveling to Italy and a few other places the past few years to "recruit members." So maybe he is doing some of the lavish thing on the side. But there's no money so I don't know where he'd get money to travel. I did read a line somewhere about people giving up their life savings when they arrive so maybe he gets that. There's not a lot of info written in English on the guy. My take is the sex thing. Surely he can have sex with any of the women he wants since he is the fake Jesus. Except Jesus never had sex, except for The Last Temptation of Christ.
