  1. http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2015/3/4/...-sox-underrated Probably Quintana's success has something to do with THIS. By the way, the PED's charges happened when he was with the Mets' organization...pre-Yankees. In 2006, at age 17, Quintana was signed by the Mets out of Colombia, but violated the minor league baseball drug policy. He was suspended for the start of his first minor league season, and was ultimately cut by the Mets in July. The Yankees then signed Quintana, where he played for their Dominican Summer League for two seasons, and ended up playing two seasons in the Yankees minor league system making it up to High-A ball in 2011 where he went 10-2 with a 2.91 ERA. http://www.pinstripealley.com/2012/9/11/33...is-just-another To be wholly fair, it is also possible they saw some things to like but didn't like them enough to push another play off the 40-man roster. In retrospect, this seems a dubious excuse; the Yankees lost not a single player in the draft, and even found room to take two pitchers, acquiring Cesar Cabral through the Royals and selecting Brad Meyers from the Nationals. They even protected David Adams, a now-25-year-old second baseman who has some real pop for a middle infielder (.295/.378/.448 in the minors) but just never plays (and as long as he's stuck behind Robinson Cano, probably never will even if he figures out how to stay healthy). They also still had Greg Golson on the roster heading into the Rule 5 draft, and subsequently punted him to make room for one of the two pitchers. In fact, when I have asked general manager Brian Cashman about this, he has told me there was not even much of an argument to do so...that turns out to be an utter failure of development and/or being able to self-analyze. Quintana might be a similar case, at least as to the brevity of his celebrity. His fastball sits at just 90 mph. He doesn't walk many, but he doesn't strike out many either, and his groundball rate is good but hardly exceptional. The White Sox play good defense. In front of a different quality of leather, he might not look as good. Basically, this is not a guy from whom you should expect consistency, and if he loses an inch off of his fastball, Abner help him. LOL about the White Sox playing good defense...but that was the case (actually) for most of 2012. Not so much since then.
  2. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 23, 2015 -> 02:17 PM) The Tigers just got swept and the Sox can get within 3.5 games of 1st with a win tonight. This is another big series for the central. With Sale on the mound it's critical to take this first one and at least get 2/3 here. The Royals are a bit of a mess after the Oakland series now is a great time to go for a sweep. Four game series. I think it's more of an issue why they're playing down to the Twins....3-3 against the worst team in the AL and 8-1 against the rest of MLB (one loss to OAK). Maybe the same overconfidence that struck down the White Sox against lesser division opponents over the last 10-15 years.
  3. Just once, I'd like to see them sign an Endy Chavez, Fr.Gutierrez or Juan Lagares quality defender in the OF...to be used as a defensive replacement. If Shuck was a good enough defensive upgrade, that would be one thing...but I have a feeling RV isn't going to pull either Cabrera or Avi for JB Shuck because of the offensive sacrifice isn't being offset enough like with DeAza/Viciedo. Maybe...someday...Thompson, but they still want to see if he can develop his bat.
  4. Betances is very tough and maybe even better than advertised...you can certainly see why they were willing to let Robertson (who's been simply great for the Sox) go.
  5. QUOTE (LDF @ Apr 23, 2015 -> 01:58 PM) excellent point, there are 2 factors, 1 or which was mention with the old Harry Carey and his sidekick, the one that got fired. he said, the cold wx affects the pitchers differently and esp coming from spring training. i remember he even mention at one time that they should extend spring training an extra week, with that week being in there home town. Jimmy Piersall....my second White Sox autograph, following Claudell Washington...although I never saw him as a player, just knew the whole "Fear Strikes Out" story.
  6. Focus was better than I expected...although it's still well short of the Ocean's movies. Will Smith and Margot Robbie had some pretty incredible chemistry, which obviously wasn't well received in real-life by Jada Pinkett. Will put it this way...5X better than Runner, Runner with Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake, although that's a VERY low bar or standard to get over. For most of the movie, it was quite watchable. The thing I kept thinking, though, is whenever you're on top of the world, something will strike you down, whether you're Tom Cruise, Meg Ryan, Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie or now Smith, who around 5 years ago could do no wrong in Hollywood. In general, Americans tend not to be too forgiving about extramarital affairs (depending on how they go down) from their "role models." When it's the president, maybe the expectation is lower, haha. Would be hard pressed to say who's the most popular actor today...I guess Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling are close. For me, personally, Clooney and Denzel Washington have always been my two favorites, although I can see how Clooney's "The Player" smugness and "where is he saving people in the world today?" thing could be annoying to some. From everything you read, he is a very genuine and honest person, and a bit unconventional (see his choice of wife, when for the last 15 or so years he joked he would never marry again nor have children).
  7. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Apr 17, 2015 -> 10:26 AM) Franklin Reyes plagued in the All American game as a 14 year old. Here's is the All American's game bio on him: Franklin Reyes OF 6’4 190lb R/R DOB 9-11-98 San Cristobal, DR Franklin is trained by Basilio Vizcaino. His brother Franmil is a UAAA alumni now playing in the San Diego Padres system. Franklin is physically impressive with XXL frame and wiry muscular tone. He’s a prototypical RF’er possessing plus raw power, hit ability and plus arm strength. http://dplbaseball.com/dpl-news/reyes-and-...l-america-game/ He was also featured in a BA article, In don't subscribe but to those that do: http://www.baseballamerica.com/internation...franklin-reyes/ You're okay?
  8. Perception. If you ask 1000 casual fans who Eddie Collins and Carlton Fisk played for, the answers will be the Philadelphia A's and Boston Red Sox. That's life as a White Sox fan.
  9. Another way to look at it is 21-41 against KC without Sale starting or relieving sometime during the game.
  10. Another way to look at it is 21-41 against KC without Sale starting or relieving sometime during the game.
  11. It's basically the same exact design as Kauffman Stadium....minus the outfield fountains, and the fact that the upper decks in KC gradually slope down towards the foul poles instead of staying at the same height all the way around.
  12. http://www.csnchicago.com/white-sox/white-...ady-next-chance Rodon definitely doesn't seem in any way shaken or even slightly disturbed. Confidence, bordering on arrogance, but seems to be in a good way at the moment.
  13. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 23, 2015 -> 06:44 AM) And they have 6 guys hitting over .300. It won't last, and tonight the slide shall begin. Caulfield will be in tears. That was you (and Hawk) when Gordon Beckham made a play only eclipsed by Juan Uribe and Derek Jeter in yesterday's ballgame. Maybe, just maybe...Manny Machado, Scott Rolen and Brooks Robinson, Michael Jack Schmidt.
  14. QUOTE (LDF @ Apr 23, 2015 -> 07:35 AM) i think 1,2-7 would be ideal. maybe not a #2. if this team continues to improve and the prospects keeps replacing the vets, i can see a good value of keeping anderson in those idea spots His walk rate is too low right now for 2...he'd have to be 7-9.
  15. Records of White Sox head-to-head vs. KC 2010=10-8 2011=7-11 2012=6-12 One of the MAIN reasons they lost to DET, along with not beating the Tigers down the stretch 2013=9-10 2014=6-13 2015=0-3 Since 2010, 28-49 vs. KC, including 3-14 over their last 17 regular season games. (59-103 if they played 162 games) 2000's Twins-like. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?g...way&c_id=kc Yordano Ventura will be making his sixth start against the White Sox, the most he's made against any team. The fireballer is 2-2 with a 4.67 ERA against the White Sox. • Sale is 7-8 with a 2.68 ERA and a .265 opponents' average against the Royals over 24 career appearances, including 13 starts. He lost his last start against Kansas City on Sept. 17, 2014, at Kauffman Stadium. Sale has a 28-14 record with a 2.70 ERA at home. • Alexei Ramirez needs one homer to reach 100 for his career. He needs one double for 200.
  16. THUR 7 pm Sale vs. Yordano Ventura FRI 7 pm Quintana vs. Danny Duffy SAT 1 pm Danks vs. Edinson Volquez SUN 1 pm Noesi vs. Jason Vargas http://www.kansascity.com/sports/spt-colum...le19217355.html Lawrie torches Royals, Kauffman stadium fans in interesting diatribe while Ned Yost invokes 1st Amendment in defending Lawrie's rights to say whatever he wants as an American. “That was probably the worst series of baseball that I’ve ever played,” Lawrie said in Jane Lee’s story for MLB.com. “I don’t think you can even call it baseball, because it wasn’t. I’ve never been a part of anything like that in three days in my entire life. It wasn’t baseball. It didn’t feel like baseball. “And the way their fans approached everything, I hated it. The way their fans were antagonizing everything, you know, I got a first-pitch missed curveball up in my head and everyone leaps up in their seat like Bruce Buffer is about to come out. That’s not how we’re doing things. Lawrie insinuated the Royals lack veteran leaders. “A lot of other teams have noticed the way they’ve been playing,” he said. “It hasn’t just been our team they’ve been having trouble with, there’s been some other teams. This is some tired stuff that’s been going on, a lot of people around the league are watching the style of play that’s been going on.” Read more here: http://www.kansascity.com/sports/spt-colum...l#storylink=cpy http://www.kansascity.com/sports/spt-colum...le19165827.html I’ve seen camera angles that make the Herrera pitch look lower than the shoulders and I’ve seen camera angles that make the pitch look higher. If Herrera wants to argue it was unintentional, gesturing at his head didn’t help his cause. But the other guys started it and Major League Baseball did not fine or suspend Lawrie for blowing up Escobar. If MLB fined or suspended Kazmir for throwing at Cain, that hasn’t come to my attention. If MLB found anything wrong with Jeff Samardzija hitting Cain on opening day, I haven’t heard about it. Read more here: http://www.kansascity.com/sports/spt-colum...l#storylink=cpy
  17. QUOTE (raBBit @ Apr 22, 2015 -> 11:28 PM) How did Viciedo become relevant here? They dumped Viciedo...which has been validated by the fact that nobody has picked him up, as of yet (maybe he's waiting for the right opportunity/injury to crop up). At any rate, there's a HUGE question mark in the minds of many whether Avisail Garcia's capable of being a SOLID #5 spot hitter, especially in terms of power and his swing mechanics (more line drives/doubles than homers). Who's the best candidate to fill in that RH power gap if Garcia doesn't become the player he's expected to become? One is Davidson, the other is Courtney Hawkins...with Trayce Thompson having an outside chance because he would bring "plus" defense to another corner position, which is sorely lacking since Garcia and Melky are both below average fielders and Melky's getting older by the day. And I don't think anyone in the organization views Tim Anderson as anything besides a 1-2 or 7-8-9 guy at the big league level initially...at least not until he matures into his body and starts putting up more power numbers up on the board.
  18. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Apr 22, 2015 -> 09:40 PM) You should stick to the pale hose threads and talking about Kris Bryant and leave the "prospect alert" talks to the big boys. Been doing this a long time my friend. Wasn't talking about "cool" in terms of status or upside.
  19. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Apr 22, 2015 -> 09:32 PM) Rooting for Davidson myself. Also I hope Guerrero doesn't have the case of the YIPS similar to Lester. Had 2 errors today on pickoffs and I believe from the 4 errors he's had in his professional career, 3/4 have been from pickoff attempts. Yes, I've been watching this kid before it was cool. And it's still early, but it looks like Jaye has FINALLY figured out how to pitch to AA hitters. It's cool now, lol? Did whoever has adopted him for the prospect alert not do a good enough PR spin job, lol? I would think Adolfo, Montas, Hawkins, Anderson, Danish and Adams would be the "cool kids" of our system...with Davidson inching back into the picture, and maybe Trayce.
  20. Nor DeAza as a punching bag. Hopefully, Geo Soto's a stabilizing presence there, as well.
  21. Also, with Viciedo gone from the organization (still unsigned), there's actually a need for some RH pop in the line-up (assuming Melky Cabrera starts to hit for more pop as well). That's going to have to come from either Hawkins, Trayce Thompson or Matt Davidson.
  22. Blessings abound. No "Sox Killer" Jeremy Guthrie in this series and Bruce Chen is presently hanging out with Greg, Bill Self and Ozzie at the Lawrence Applebee's and enjoying some chicken wings w/ honey mustard...
  23. If the Cubs had all those outfield bleachers tickets available to sell, you can bet they'd be well ahead of last year's pace.
  24. Let's not forget Alexei's pretty direct questioning of the decision not to review the Castellanos tag play... And perhaps they can figure out a way, while they're at it, to keep Jose Quintana from being in the bottom 10 in MLB WHIP.
  25. LOL. Rick Hahn wouldn't have traded Reed for Davidson and pushed Jeff Keppinger out so quickly if they felt at the time that Conor would be the long-term solution at 3B.
