That was the worst baserunning I have ever seen from Pods. Good lord.

Nevin Griffith made his debut. Scoreless inning, one K, two groundouts, one hit.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 28, 2007 -> 12:07 AM) John Ely has a higher cieling than Heath Phillips. Yeah, but I ignored rookie ball. I couldn't possibly compare them to the rest of the guys until at least a complete season of rookie ball, and even then it's tough. Great Falls seems to have a lot of guys that are doing well and Bristol has a few seemingly talented guys judging by numbers and age. We should be seeing this group in rookie ball start to dominate the bottom half of any top 25 list, even if only by default.

These are fun. We sure nailed the top two at least, in fact the top 3 looks good to date. I'll make a top 20 or so because I'm bored. Danks, Fields, Masset, Haeger, Logan, and Owens aren't getting counted because of either too much time on the Sox or in the case of Haeger, he is currently on the team. 28. Brandon Allen 27. Micah Schnurstein 26. Fernando Hernandez 25. Heath Phillips 24. Carlos Vasquez 23. John Shelby 22. Francisco Hernandez 21. Justin Cassel 20. Lucas Harrell 19. Brian Omogrosso 18. Clayton Richard 17. Derek Rodriguez 16. Donny Lucy 15. Thomas Collaro 14. Oneli Perez 13. Nevin Griffith (hard to say where to put him, but it's not like we have much left at this point) 12. Dewon Day 11. Chris Getz (man, that was tough. HUGE dropoff after Kyle) 10. Kyle McCulloch 9. Adam Russell 8. Aaron Poreda 7. Lance Broadway 6. Danny Richar 5. Jack Egbert 4. Chris Carter 3. Fautino De Los Santos 2. Ryan Sweeney (as much as I think he's going to be a bust/disappointment, he has been in the Majors and will be again. The other contenders for this spot can't say that.) 1. Gio Gonzalez That was a depressing exercise.

QUOTE(OilCan @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 09:06 PM) Is Rick Ankiel for real????? http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...&pid=150449 2007 Season Team League AVG G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG OPS MEM PCL .270 91 345 55 93 13 2 29 76 197 24 81 3 3 .320 .571 .891 Wow. Even if he's not, you gotta applaud him for persevering. He was on the front page of the sports section of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch a couple weeks ago. He should at least be a solid 4th OFer. With Edmonds and Encarnacion both old, there's a solid shot that he might even get a look at a starting spot.

Sweeney is 2 for his last 28, down to .277, but I'm sure we'll hear about him 'quietly' going on a hot streak a week from now and people will forget that he hasn't even mastered AAA yet.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 10:02 PM) Draft position be damned and all that stuff, it still feels mighty good to win. JON JD EHREN JENKS Yeah, all that. Anybody starting to think Wasserman might be a real Major League pitcher?

I could definitely see Mizzou wanting out of the Big 12, but athletically there is no reason they would be wanted by the Big 10. Academically I would like to think Mizzou is close enough to the rest of the Big 10 that they wouldn't stick out. Mizzou athletics mostly suck. Football might have a shot at winning one of the divisions every once in a blue moon if they avoid Ohio State and Michigan, though I don't know why I'm saying that because they can't even win the Big 12 North. Mizzou basketball is average, maybe they can get back to being a tournament team, but they aren't a draw. The only programs worth a damn, and that have the accomplishments to prove it, at Mizzou are wrestling (3rd in the country last year and looks to maintain that) and baseball. Wrestling would be fighting with Iowa, etc. in the conference, but would just be one of a few solid programs in the conference. Mizzou baseball would probably wipe out Big 10 baseball before losing out on recruits because the Big 10 is only mediocre at baseball. I guess it says more that I used wrestling and baseball in my argument to sell Mizzou to the Big 10. I'm not sure if I would want Mizzou to move to the Big 10. It would be cool because I'm still a Northwestern fan and care more about the Big 10 in general than the Big 12. The Big 12 isn't really a conference, it's 'let's see the Texas schools and Oklahoma fight it out with Nebraska for everything' (oh and Kansas basketball I guess). With that said, I think Mizzou would be beat around in the Big 10 a little more than the Big 12.

Considering it's his first year in the States and they haven't promoted him yet, it's reasonable to think they are just taking it easy with him. He did start the year as a reliever. It's possible they originally planned for him to be in relief for the I's until rookie ball started and then make him a starter for Great Falls. It's been done before, but not with high profile guys. He is almost at twice of what he threw in the DSL last year so it's possible they want to shut him down or he is going through a dead arm period or something.

QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Jul 26, 2007 -> 07:58 PM) I think it's OK to flame the selection now. Carlos Gomez of THT was able to predict he'd get injured by looking at 40 seconds of video. Now we have forearm tightness (often a symptom of compensating for shoulder problems) and reducing Poreda's workload to a reliever. Any wanna bet this guy can sustain the innings to make it to the big leagues let alone as a starter? If some guy blogging for THT can see future problems in a cursory look, what was the Sox staff doing? Nice new direction. How is this different from a dead arm period? What's to say it is in fact a long term problem? The people who wanted to hate on this pick found a reason to and the rest of us can wait because the half year after a guy is drafted is almost never significant.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 25, 2007 -> 10:41 PM) Dan -- Francisco Hernandez was suspended for quite some time this season, right? If so, was it an on-field related or a drug-related suspension? He was suspended for 7 days and I thought the first suspension for steroids was 15 days so I'm going to guess no, but I really don't know for sure.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 06:26 PM) I was nowhere near as obsessive til he did well in AA. How many times did I mention him last year? I said he was a sleeper coming into the season.... Yeah...right. You were over this guy from the day he started doing well in spot starts for Kanny.

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Jul 24, 2007 -> 12:15 AM) No that is a terrible analogy. It would be like MJ going to China to make a new Chinese basketball league and the Lakers coming over to play, and then MJ not suiting up for the game because he had an ankle injury. Im sorry but the MLS season is meaningless, if you want legitamacy in the league they need to beat high powereed teams like Chelsea, etc. Also, MLS season has already started, LA is the second to last team, so who cares if he sits another 2-3 weeks. MLS is a joke, they should be taking these friendlys like the world series. Just like its more important for a Japanese team to beat a USA team when they go to Japan. A win against top competition brings legitimacy. While beating these teams is important, they are in training. This isn't these teams in their top form. It's like Spring Training for them. The point is to make the MLS season big and that is going to happen with bringing guys like Beckahm over.

An ankle injury for a soccer player is a lot like a wrist injury for a hitter. There's healthy and there is back in playing shape. We've all seen many hitters go down with day-to-day wrist injuries. They can be physically healthy quickly, but they aren't back into playing shape for a bit longer. Beckham's injury isn't a big deal, but it is a serious injury. Every cut, every plant, every change of direction puts pressure on it.
