Rienzo suspended 50 games
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 10:34 PM) Can't find it, but it (the signing) happened in 2006, so one would have to guess yes is the answer....since he was part of Silverio, Anderson Gomes and Paulo Orlando too, no way he wasn't intimately involved in all these transactions. Jose Martinez was signed out of Venezuela (being Carlos' son helped surely)....same year. Signed by: Amador Arias/Dave Wilder.

Rienzo suspended 50 games
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 09:36 PM) Isn't there an appeals process that happens before a suspension? 10 days ago I guess. I was referring to why they had him repeat the level.

Rienzo suspended 50 games
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 06:51 PM) Well that explains whey they didn't move him up. No it doesn't. They just recently found out. Big bummer though.

4/25 Games
Not expecting power is one thing, but saying they aren't hitting power because they're not trying to is an awfully convenient explanation. Kanny also has a team batting average of .248 so I don't know what you're seeing in terms of 'lots of hitters with averages up.' Looking at the players individually Ravelo and Pangilinan both hit for little power in the past. Smith's power is down and Buckner doesn't have an extra base hit yet, though he just got there. Walker's power is down from Great Falls, but he played in Kannapolis last year and really struggled so who knows there. There are plenty of possible explanations and certainly going from the hitter friendly Pioneer League to a pitchers' park in Kannapolis will play with the numbers. I just think your explanation was optimistic considering how many factors are involved and how little we actually know. I don't think it's something to worry about, but when specifically talking about Ravelo not hitting for power he has a history of doing it and it's nothing new.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 01:25 PM) Why are people thinking calling him a September call-up candidate is so crazy? It's not like they said he will be in Chicago by June. 15 players get added to the roster in September, and I can see Robin wanting an advanced speedy player on his bench if the Sox are in the hunt. 15 guys never get called up in September. That's the max. It's usually less than half that. Also, Mitchell isn't even on the 40-man roster right now.

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 12:54 PM) We'll see. He was a first rounder that got hurt, and now he's got a .447 OBP in AA. I don't think there's anything wrong with being excited about this, nor do I think it's unrealistic to think he'll be up in September. He hasn't even had 100 PA yet.

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 12:37 PM) Mitchell 3-3, BB, 3B Can you say September callup? I didn't think it was possible last year, but he looked great in spring, and he's still going. Wow take it easy. It hasn't even been a month yet and he still has a high K rate.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 26, 2012 -> 08:35 AM) Take a look at the stats for Kanny's starting position players as a whole. Other than Mark Haddow, it is remarkable how many of them have relatively low SLG compared to their AVG and OBP. Kevan Smith, for example, is doing pretty much the same thing Ravelo is. So, is it that Kanny is just full of non-power guys? Looking at what some of their guys did last year, I'd say the answer is No. More likely, this is something they are teaching the team as a whole - contact first, power later. I wouldn't worry about it. Especially with Ravelo, who is still so young. Man, it takes some serious rose colored glasses to say that.

QUOTE (daggins @ Apr 25, 2012 -> 09:33 PM) That walk from Ravelo actually makes me happier than another hit. Yeah, when you're on a 15-game hitting streak and hitting almost .400 you should be able to draw some walks. I'm still more worried about the power though. Patience can be learned. Power can come late as well, but he hasn't had an extra base hit in 7 games after a good start. Let's see how this goes. I'd hate to think he's just a slightly better version of Jon Gilmore.

2012 Minor League Catch All thread
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Apr 24, 2012 -> 10:58 PM) It said the median age for AA is 24, that's way off. The average AA player is 25-26. I know, exactly. The median age is 24. This isn't something they made up or suggested. They figured it out. The average age would be higher with older players skewing the numbers, something they also mentioned.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Apr 24, 2012 -> 03:56 PM) I'd add a year or so to the AA level. That would be average age.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 24, 2012 -> 09:12 AM) I've never cared for his movies either...and I deliberately avoid them...but this one has me very intrigued... Completely agree. I think his movies take themselves too seriously at times. They're so strange that they should always be comedies. I think this can work.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 24, 2012 -> 09:19 AM) I take it you're not counting the Bana or Norton Hulk movies.... Iron Man > Captain America > Thor > Iron Man 2 Correct on the Hulks. They were terrible, but I also think the Hulk is a garbage character. To say Captain America was better than Thor is way off. Also, I don't get why people didn't like Iron Man 2. It's a really entertaining action movie. You can't compare an original to a sequel because the original has the back story, which if the character is any good should be the single best stand alone story. Comics aren't made for 2 hour movies. They develop story lines over many issues and weave things in and out like a TV show and you don't have time to do that with a movie. Once a movie character is developed in the original the sequel should be him showing off how bad ass he is, which Iron Man 2 did.

QUOTE (Capn12 @ Apr 23, 2012 -> 12:46 PM) So Fringe last Friday...they veer off to a 'future where Observers take over the planet', no conclusion to the story, then this week coming, we're back to the 'Jones is trying to collapse both universes'??? Huh? Just jump all over the damn place, then, I guess.... I thought it was interesting. Dollhouse, another failed FOX scifi show that didn't receive enough marketing, did something similar and it really worked. (I loved that show, but I only found it on Netflix streaming after it was canceled, still recommend it.) I like it when the characters of the show know more about the story than we do. It's non-traditional story telling, but it keeps you guessing. Otherwise I have to agree with you, taking this long to connect the stories is frustrating, especially considering there's possibly 3 episodes left in the series. I heard in a John Noble interview that they filmed an extra scene at the end of the last episode depending on whether it gets renewed or not. If the show gets renewed we see the extra scene. If it doesn't get renewed the show basically ends on a season finale without a cliffhanger.

QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 22, 2012 -> 07:02 PM) Gotta like what's happening with some of the starting pitching--Castro, Quintana, Molina, and Axelrod all could help at some point this season. It's funny because Castro and Molina really struggled in the first start or two a piece, but since then they've settled in nicely. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Apr 22, 2012 -> 07:12 PM) some of these young guys keep dealing and it's time to deal floyd for a bat. Axelrod (or Terry Doyle) are the only near-MLB ready pitchers. Castro and Molina will not be ready in 2012.

Axelrod is really dominating in AAA. 26 K to 4 BB on the year. That's the kind of stats that get you promoted. Not that the Sox need another SP and I don't want him in the bullpen, but you can never have enough pitching.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 19, 2012 -> 08:37 PM) Terry Doyle flat out dominated. 8 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 11 K. Doyle's line has been edited. He pitched 6 innings and Anthony Carter pitched the next two. I thought that pitch count was absurd.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 19, 2012 -> 08:10 PM) Uh-oh, Mitchell matching the major league club, 0 for 3 with 2 K's. Down to .275. 18 k's in 51 at-bats, once again about what the major league team is averaging, 1 out of every 3 by strikeout. He's also got 11 BB so you can't say he's striking out 1 in 3. Terry Doyle with 121 pitches tonight. Edit: not really. MILB updated the box, see below.

QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Apr 19, 2012 -> 06:01 PM) Entirely possible that there's a coach there that they want him working with on some specific aspect of his game too. Yeah, technically they're always working on something. At this point it's not something new to him or something that he's focusing on that's taking away from his approach to hitters.

QUOTE (scenario @ Apr 19, 2012 -> 11:16 AM) You also see stuff like this happen when a guy needs to work on a certain pitch... and they don't want him to get pounded while doing it. Judging by the numbers he was more likely to be working on something last year. He's been too dominant so far to be working on a pitch.

Kuhn has played second or third, but I don't think he's very good at either spot. He could probably out hit Morel/Beckham, then again who couldn't? Escobar is the best bet.
