  1. I got spanked quite often as a little kid because I was really bad. I don't consider it abuse and didn't then, but nowadays it probably would qualify as abuse to some. I don't spank my son as often as I got spanked though, it's not necessary. It's not about causing the child pain, it's about sending a message. Right now the threat of being spanked is good enough and he can hear it in my voice. On the rare occasions I do spank him, it's not that hard. A couple swats on the ass, popping the back of his hand, or yanking his ear will do it and he'll cry because I hurt his feelings and made him stop doing what he's doing. I save it for when I really want to make my point though or when he's not listening, like playing near something dangerous after being told to stop, or running into the street. Oh and in my house, talking back to an adult doesn't fly. It'll get you slapped in the mouth. I'm old school like that.
  2. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 05:55 PM) Since the government will be offering "lower cost" insurance, the "market" will have to match, right? Now, since the government policies will HAVE to be done at a loss, therefore making ALL "private" insurance at a loss, that basically puts them out of business. Wait for it... wait for it... "this should be (non-profit)"... "costs are so far out of control... yet Obama will CUT costs..." - yea, tell me a time when the government has CUT costs again? Nevermind. Now I'll just get leftist blog after leftist blog politburo bulls*** telling me the "realities" of how this is the greatest thing ever. I hope you like your grandparents and parents because they will be dead quicker now (on average) if this thing passes. OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOO, STRAW MAN ARGUEMENT!!!!!!!! Wrong. Obama admits it, freely. The elderly will be where the cost cuts have to happen. What a GREAT system we're embarking on here! It's WAY better then what we have now! Power to the people! Woot! lol are you on autopilot or something? You haven't figured out that I basically want the same thing you do yet?
  3. Yeah Obama straight up broke all of his "transparency" promises. No other way to put it. They're probably promises he never should've made and he realized that once he got into office.
  4. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 02:49 PM) FPct is a relatively unhelpful fielding statistic, particularly for OF's. Most OF's make few errors, and the pct doesn't give you any idea on range, arm, jumps, reads, etc. There are a whole host of other measures you could use to get a better picture. But really, with defense, your best tool is your eyes. Wise gets really poor jumps and simply doesn't get to a lot of balls that Brian does, which won't show up in your PCT measure. People still do tend to over-exaggerate Wise's lack of defensive ability (and I'm one of the biggest Wise bashers on this site). He's no worse than average, if you hit a fly ball to CF he will catch it. He's not good, but he's not Mackowiak bad by any means.
  5. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 02:14 PM) It's always nice to compare apples to scientific calculators. Heh, you're about as anti-gun as possible, I didn't expect you to go this route.
  6. QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 02:11 PM) I'm all about allowing teenagers to drive but this is flagrantly taking a s*** on states' rights. If, for a relatively extreme example, I choose to live in a state with strict laws that include more driver's education and probation periods, why should Illinois or Ohio be able to override my state's laws? Driving ≠ guns.
  7. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 01:24 PM) You noticed how after that blog was made, Slayer has only missed what... 1 game? He won't be nearly as dicked around. Ozzie might not like it, and even Hawk can add his 2 cents, but the organization takes it to heart. I don't agree with BlackJack on this one though. Beckham forced the issue by being on fire.
  8. Marijuana legalization is unpopular?
  9. Part of the idea is that the government option will force private insurers to lower costs to stay competitive. If they insist on inflating costs, they lose business to people that want to look for a better deal. That's the way the rest of the free market works, the healthcare market shouldn't be any different. Although without cost controls/incentivizing efficiency, the whole idea is useless.
  10. I'm all about concealed carry but this is flagrantly taking a s*** on states' rights. If, for a relatively extreme example, I choose to live in a state with liberal laws that include more gun control measures, why should Texas or Arizona be able to override my state's laws?
  11. Bachmann opposes a public option because it's cheaper. http://minnesotaindependent.com/39874/bach...use-its-cheaper lol. Um... no s***? If private insurance costs weren't spinning out of control we wouldn't even be talking about this.
  12. QUOTE (soxfan-kwman @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 10:14 AM) I agree that is it, nothing more, nothing less. He has been our most consistent playe the last 4 years. Even in the bad 2007 season, Bobby was still money!! He could lose the chin pubes!! Jermaine Dye says hi
  13. Has anyone noted Beckham is over .300 now?
  14. QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 09:07 AM) I like McDowell, too. Always have. Especially after he flipped off the Yankee fans. But I think Ozzie saw this as a chance to tell Richard "Job well done, son." and it was the right move. Agree.
  15. QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 09:00 AM) Neither did Black Jack. Yeah, I like Black Jack, but I think his opinion carries about as much weight as yours or mine. I criticize a lot of Ozzie's in-game decisions but not this one. In that situation, Ozzie knows best.
  16. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 11:06 PM) He was doing well because he was used in non pressure situations with match ups that were very favorable towards him. Ozzie handled him with kid gloves. I rip Ozzie as much as anyone, but he used Poreda correctly. He is not ready to get major league hitters out when they need to be out. Maybe in time he will be, but he's going to have to get the gas back and/or improve the secondary pitches and get some command. If that is how they planned to use him all along, he never should've been called up. None of this accomplished anything.
  17. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 12:23 AM) With all due respect to your as usual spot on numbers, I don't think keeping Bobby out of non-save situations is going to fix everything. I don't think that's what he was saying.
  18. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 11:43 PM) The past month had nothing to do with tonight. Who the f*** cares what his past month looked like? Tonight was all that mattered, and he had everything working for him. Also, his arm is unconditioned? He's been starting for what, 3 months now? If his arm isn't conditioned, he shouldn't be starting right now. Also, it really had nothing to do with the closer in that situation in the first place. I mentioned Jenks struggling his previous couple outings, but that should have had no bearing on the decision. Tonight was not the type of game where you go to the bullpen when you have your pitcher pitching as well as Richard was. You put him out there on a short leash. If he looks fatigued out there and he doesn't have the same stuff/control as the previous 8, fine take him out. Also, what's better, giving your pitcher a chance to win it? Or let someone else finish the game for him and close the book on you? I, as a former player, would prefer the former.
  19. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 02:57 PM) Was this supposed to be in green? Soxtalk is home to the BA fanboy club. It actually goes in either direction when you see the arguments. They're all the same.
  20. QUOTE (Jeremy @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 02:41 PM) why is it so hard for some people to be reasonable and objective when discussing Anderson? I've been wondering this myself since 2006.
  21. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 01:05 AM) Right! He is where he needs to be now We aren't really talking about right now, it would be just silly to do that if the org. moved him from 3B.
  22. QUOTE (soxfan-kwman @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 01:28 PM) FYI- Wise has not played enough to use his batting average as a reference. Wait what? Go back and look at the rest of the time he was in the majors, then look at his average (to be generous) minor league numbers, of which there are a lot. Wise is not good. At all. There are probably dozens of players just like him (or better) that can be had at any given time.
  23. QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 12:51 PM) I can't argue against that. But during Ozzie's time as Sox manager, and KW as GM for that matter, I have enjoyed being a Sox fan more than in any other era. I've been a Sox Fan a long time. These past few years have been the best. So really, it's overall body of work that makes me shake my head at the Ozzie is an idiot idiots. I like Ozzie a lot personally. He just does dumb things from time to time that piss me off and I can't explain, and need to vent about.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 21, 2009 -> 12:44 PM) 1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes. 2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax. 3. Abolition of all right of inheritance. 4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels. 5. Centralization of credit in the hands of the State, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly. 6. Centralization of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the State. 7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan. 8. Equal liability of all to labour. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture. 9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction between town and country, by a more equal distribution of the population over the country. 10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children's factory labor in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production. Yeah, people who laugh at the Socialism or Communism comparisons... Ones which actually apply: #2 - This is true but it's not something that's exclusive to socialism. The idea came about before that. #5 - Put this in the "to be determined" category but again, ideas like this were floated in like the 1830s. Karl Marx was probably in high school or college at the time. #10 - Absolutely true but not sure what's wrong with it (except for the last part, probably talking about trade schools which people have to pay for themselves). The rest are bulls*** that people grasp at straws to try to prove that the government is taking everything over. The only other thing that sort of resembles socialism/Marxism from most liberals is the idea of social equality (in terms of opportunity, not quality of life), and who in their right mind could say there is something bad about that? That's probably one of the most American ideals there is.
