  1. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 27, 2008 -> 10:33 AM) This is the best name in all of minor league baseball, he's teammates with Tim Beckham... http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st...&pid=502679 fantastic, just fantastic
  2. it sounds like he's a bit of a character, nice to know however that he's the type of team leader who isn't afraid to take charge of a situation
  3. I'm excited about the both of them. Congrats to them
  4. Wise is not the answer to our leadoff problem. Let's remember that the only reason he's on the team is b/c PK is on the DL. If not for that he'd be in Charlotte. Wise is probably just another AAAA player and will not give us a better chance at winning by batting 1 instead of OC who's hitting great over the last month.
  5. Carlos and Jenks should absolutely be in the game and one of the following - Dye, Linebrink, Danks, Vasquez, Floyd, Crede deserve to be selected. You can't have a first place team with only 2 all-star and reserves at that. out starting pitching has been fantastic this season both starting and bullpen and crede/dye have been killing the ball.
  6. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 09:05 AM) That is correct. I believe Benson played some minor league ball for the Dodgers while he was at Texas, and Dennis Dixon with the Braves when he was at Oregon. True you can play minor league baseball and still play another sport in college but once you've lost amateur athlete status you have to pay your own tuition. I know this b/c of the Dennis Dixon situation (Oregon is my alma mater)
  7. QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Jun 23, 2008 -> 05:34 PM) I'm pretty sure that during that draft I heard the commentators saying that if you are going to play ball at a 4-year college, you can only leave to play professionally after your junior and senior seasons and if you are going to play ball at a junior college you can leave after your first or second year. I may be wrong, but I thought this is what I heard... If you go to a 4 year you have to spend 3 years there. not sure if that is 3 years playing ball or 3 years including a redshirt season
  8. I don't think that Poreda's 1st AA start was all that bad, WHIP of 1.00 and 5k's. It wasn't great but there's a huge jump in talent from High-A to AA, should take him a while to adjust to that.
  9. Born Nov, 8 1985 Andrew (goes by Drew) started his college career at Wake Forrest and took a medical redshirt his freshman season after having Tommy John surgery. Then transferred to Young Harris College and played one season there before transferring to Penn State. Drafted by Cincinatti in the 8th round last year but opted to come back to college for another season. 22 for 23 career record in save situations and over his 2 years at PSU he gave up only 11 earned runs in a total of 62.1 innings. This last season he had 43 groundouts vs. 8 air outs (only 3 made it to the outfield) so it sounds like he's got a pretty good sinker. Not sure what his velocity is right now but after his TJ surgery he was able to get it up around the high 80's low 90's. He's also already graduated from college with an economics degree. He also has a funny picture at this link Drew O'neil
  10. We're gonna need him healthy if we want to stay in the race later in the season. I say we give him all the time he needs to get back to 100%, he's too important to our team to be playing him while he's hurt
  11. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 12, 2008 -> 02:45 PM) Nerd alert! no wonder he doesn't get any dates dropping pearls like that on the ladies
  12. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jun 12, 2008 -> 11:07 AM) Done. And as the GF paper article said KW2 will be in camp shortly, I bolded him as well. I'll believe that when I see it. He's a definite holdout
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 11, 2008 -> 06:59 PM) Esteban Yan? He actually got a mention in a Simpsons episode. Which one? I'm a big time Simpson's fan and I can't ever remember hearing him mentioned.
  14. Nothing is written in ink yet but it is definitely a good sign that he's fired Boras. It's also good that John fired him too, gives us a better chance at signing him to a good deal to buy out his arb years plus a team option for a couple years after arb
  15. If he's available to sign as a free agent I think that the fact that we already have two cubans on the team with the same agent gives us an automatic leg up on the rest of the MLB. If he's a legit prospect and his demands aren't outrageous then we need to make a play for him. We coughed up almost 5 million to sign Alexi, I don't see why we wouldn't do a similar deal to get this kid.
  16. Rumor making the rounds right now is that his agent told all MLB teams that if they weren't going to give him first round money then he'd just go back to college. Who know if this is true but that's what i heard
  17. If we sign Long I got dibs on his AAP. I'm a Raiders fan and like that whole family
  18. thats too bad, i was hoping that he could figure it out and cut his strikeout rate down a bit. he had some serious power
  19. QUOTE (BFirebird @ Jun 6, 2008 -> 10:36 AM) How many of these later round picks actually sign? I have never really paid attention to the draft and wondered how many sign compared to either go to college or go back to college. it all depends on the player and what he wants. However i can say that if it were impossible to sign any of these HS players contemplating college then no team would draft them. they are signable, just depends on what they are looking for, i.e. right organization, big money, coaches, personal connections, etc...
  20. I've been reading about long for a while now because I like to do a lot of research for the NFL draft and read about his brother. This is definitely a high reward type player who slipped b/c of his signability. He has excellent bloodlines and is super-athletic for a guy his size. I could really see him turning into a feared hitter and honestly looking 5 years down the road I'll be surprised if he doesn't make it to the bigs. He's got fantastic genetics, his dad obviously HOF pro football player, his mom was an olympic athlete I believe, and his brother is an elite athlete. On top of that he's got the same work ethic as his father and older brother. I absolutely love this pick. I know we still have to sign him but this could be the steal of the draft so far
  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 6, 2008 -> 07:57 AM) Even though I don't think he's any special, I love the Danks pick. If nothing else, it will shut up a lot of people on here. agreed
  22. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 05:24 PM) If Kenny Williams Jr. ever sniffs the big leagues, I'll f***ing kiss your balls. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!! funniest thing I've heard or read all day long. thanks
  23. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 11:24 AM) I'd guess he neglects the lower half of his body in workouts. He really is a disgusting fat body. Couldn't even run straight in the videos featured on ESPN. that's not how it works. you only have legs like that through pure genetics. you don't get your legs smaller by working them out all the time, in fact, his legs could be so big because he works them hard but it's not just laziness
  24. oakland really overdrafted with Weeks. he's like a 2b version of Juan Pierre, all speed and little else
