  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 05:02 PM) Too bad you don't look at results for the truth. He's been GM for 10 seasons. They made the playoffs 5 times. They had 6 90+ win seasons, 1 88 win season and 1 87 win season, all with a budget less than most teams including the White Sox. Not saying that Billy doesn't know how to assemble a talented team but in any of those seasons have the A's REALLY been a contender or just good teams without the juice to go all the way. I like what Billy does in working with a low payroll but he does continue to sell off all of his talent for prospects seemingly year after year. This goes all the way back to Giambi, Mulder, Hudson, Tejada, Haren, Harden, Blanton, anybody else that I've forgotten? I'm sure there is, the only big name player that they signed to a long term deal was Eric Chavez who has had his career derailed by injuries. Guess my point is that eventually you have to stop selling off your talent and take a shot at winning it all. In the late 90's early 00's he had a rotation of Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder, and Barry Zito yet chose to break up the trio by trading Hudson and Mulder, at that point all three of them were dominant pitchers, if you aren't going to make a run at the title with those three anchoring the staff, Keith Foulke closing games and Giambi, Tejada, and Dye in the lineup then when are you???? He doesn't seem willing to take the necessary risk to make a title run. That is one thing that I respect about KW- at least he's got balls.
  2. Price gave up 3 hr's today in 5 innings. hadn't given up a hr all season, about 100IP. nice
  3. QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 02:31 PM) Brandon Allen was promoted to Birmingham. nice, bout time. i think that he's got some real potential. not only does he hit for great power but he's got a decent average and can even steal a base, I think he's got about 15 swipes right now. i'm excited to see how he performs at the higher level
  4. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 02:07 PM) Thank you. It's amazing how some people have the audacity to take what should be a pretty cool thread about the President of the United States following Danks' career and turn it into a political attack on Bush. This is baseball, not politics. I'm disappointed in a few good posters who surprised me with their political comments... Doesn't really surprise me, politics are always a hot button topic, plus the fact that we're in the middle of the presidential campaign and then finally the polarizing nature of GW's current policies and the financial/political/global uncertainty that exists in the country today. Because of all these variables taking place at the same time it has created a bit of a perfect storm that really gets people's blood boiling no matter what side of the fence they may sit. I think we can just expect to see responses like this regarding any political type issues or in this case just the mere mention of a politician until the election is well past us.
  5. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Jul 16, 2008 -> 04:47 PM) Was Jenks DL stint retroactive, or is he going to have to wait a few games to rejoin the team? Retro
  6. Charlotte, Birmingham, Kannapolis, and Great Falls all have the night off Winston-Salem over Kinston 10-2 Allen goes 2-4 and with a 2b and Shelby 2 for 2 with a 3b and 2rbi. Both have a .279 avg. Texiera closes the game and his era is now at .098 Bristlos loses to Danville 6-5 Lin with the start goes 7IP 0R 3BB 2K. his ERA down to 3.05 Silverio goes 0-4 with 3K ouch Ken Gilbert in his second pro season is batting .296 with an OPS of .800 he's also only 19, may be a prospect
  7. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 15, 2008 -> 10:45 AM) Thing is though, Silverio is (supposedly) 16. Even if he does one year at each level - Bristol, GF, Kanny, W-S, B-Ham and Charlotte - he'll only be 21 at Charlotte. So he's basically fast track by nature. I get the impression that they won't rush him. Regier has been quoted as saying they don't want to rush the younger players too much (like they did with Valido). He's actually 17 now so he'd be 22 at charlotte
  8. Charlotte is off Birmingham is off W-S vs. Kinston Bobby Jenks got the start and went 1IP with 1ER and 3H. Brandon Allen went yard for #15 on the season, Shelby is 2 for 3 with a 2b Kannapolis vs. Rome Game 1- Shirek with the start, Escobar 2 for 3 game 2 Kannapolis vs. Rome Bristol vs. Danville Silverio breaks out of a slump going 2 for 4 with his 3rd HR and 4 rbi's. He also has his 10th error on the season. ouch Great Falls vs. Ogden Gerst with a BB and a SB already He has 4 sb with 0 cs, obp of .447 and an ops of almost 1.200 Its time to move him up to Kanny
  9. I'm not really interested in him, i think this year his performance is an abberation and he'll level out after the break. I looked into his #'s a bit and found a breakdown of his season which pretty much sums up what I already thought about him
  10. I've always heard that Quentin was an above-average fielder, according to some coming into this season he was good enough to contend for our starting CF position so i'm not too worried about him. also, he's such a hard worker and a professional that if he's having any problems in the of he'll definitely put in the work to get better in the offseason
  11. QUOTE (BlackBetsy @ Jul 10, 2008 -> 05:39 PM) I haven't seen any word on Beckham in a loooooong time. It would be nice to have him get some pro ball in this year. Not to mention that the "all but signed" Jordan Danks is still not signed. seriously, it would be nice to know if any progress is being made or if they're even in contact. Nothing has happened on the signings front for a while
  12. Anyone know why Kent Gerst hasn't been playing? I checked the roster and it doesn't say anything about him being injured. I thought he was a top prospect
  13. an o-fer with 4k's? Maybe Paulie should go back down to AAA for a bit longer until he gets his timing back and as far as o-cab dancing around on the bases dye should be thanking him for making the pitcher have to think about something else. that's the whole idea behind having fast baserunners, they distract the pitcher so that they hopefully throw bad pitches, this actually makes it easier for the batter. I remember when Pod's would get on base the first half of '05 it gave pitchers fits and it resulted in a lot of fat pitches for the batters following him
  14. Escobar has finally started hitting after a rough start at Kannapolis. Anyone know anything about this guy, is he a legit prospect??? He is playing above his level at only 19 already in A-ball
  15. To get him PK or Thome would have to be part of the deal and there's no way the braves would take on either of those contracts
  16. just check my name and that's my list #1-25
  17. Poreda's looking good so far in AA. He's only had one really bad game so far, pretty good strikeout numbers and few walks. If he keeps it up he may be a late season call-up a-la Bobby Jenks '05. This all presupposes however that we're in contention
  18. Charlotte loses to Durham 7-1 the Durham starter was nasty with a CG only 1bb and 12k's Charlotte v. Durham B-Ham beats Mobile 6-2. Gartrell has good game going 2 for 3 with a double, walk and 3 runs scored. Carlos Torres with the win going 6 giving up 1 er. Birmingham v. Mobile W-S beats Fredrick 3-1. Texiera with his 17th sv Santelitz gets the win, his ERA is at 1.83. Shelby not in the lineup W-S v. Fredrick Kanny loses to Lake County 8-5 in 10 innings. Escobar bats leadoff and goes 2-4 his average up to .209 after a horrible start in a-ball. Kanny v. Lake County GF loses to Billings 3-2. Morel 1-4 avg is .383. Skogley gets the loss but has a great start going 6 giving up 2 ER with 2bb and 11k's. His era at GF this season is 2.66 with 32k's and only 4bb in 23.2 IP. GF v. Billings Bristol loses to Pulaski 7-6. Po-Yu Lin gets the loss. Silverio 1-4 with 2k's avg. down to .250. Castillo is raking 2-5 today with a 3b and a rbi avg up to .409. Greene gets his 11 steal on the season in only 14 games. his ops is also 1.003, he might be a player Bristol v. Pulaski
  19. Sounds like Danks is all but signed. I'm happy to hear that
  20. Poreda goes 6.2 1ER 1BB 5K, despite the high era he's looked pretty good in AA to far
  21. Stoked. This is a big signing, if we can get two of Danks, Upchurch, and Long to sign I'll consider this draft a success for the immediate future. Those were three players with signability issues which is why they slipped in the draft, to have one of them in the fold is great news.
  22. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 02:26 PM) Any word on Beckham or Danks? bottom paragraph of the article, sounds very promising, really hope we can sign him, I think that will instantly upgrade the overall quality of draft that we had this year considering the probability that we wasted a pick on KW2 http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=65850
  23. Wise's line today 0 for 4 with 3 k's thats why he's not our new leadoff man
  24. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 27, 2008 -> 01:34 PM) The funny thing is, how'd he get a name like that being from the Dominican Republic? Also, there's the guy who plays for Great Falls whose name is another way of spelling a self inflicting torture device. Don't know or care how he got the name, just glad that there's a man like him around.
  25. I'd like to give Buddy Bell just a little credit that he knows what he's doing. He's one of the more respected men in baseball and has a reputation as a no bullsh** kind of guy. Lets just wait a little while before rushing to judgement on the draft and promotions
