At what point is this season not considered a success?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 07:26 AM) Stone was singing the praises of Cleveland's totally rebuilt bullpen, and the other day said if the Sox had KC's bullpen, they would be in first place. Even with all the other issues, fixing the bullpen has to be the priority. It effects the game and overall record a lot more than the other holes. Fill the other holes if you can, but make sure that the bullpen is addressed. Sounds like Stone is spending too much time with Hawk -

Big rumors that Las Vegas, Seattle, Toronto, and Quebec will get expansion teams by 2017. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 10:58 PM) Another loss...once again, all the RBIs by guys who should be back next year. That's what matters, although it's disappointing to see Q have such a bad start against a division rival

QUOTE (glangon @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 08:31 AM) Which is still better than Beckham who we are comparing him to. That is true. I was just questioning how resolved our catcher issue would be given that Castro has really only been better than Flowers once in the past 3 seasons. -
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 07:07 AM) Jordan played for the Sox in 2012, so he had to have been added to the 40 in 2012 at the latest. That said, if he wasn't added to the 40 until he was called up and then stayed up the rest of the season, then 2012 would not count as an option year. If anybody knows of a site that includes a detailed transaction history on players, I would love to hear about it. From what I found on this site, Danks was left off the 40-man roster in November 2011, so he was eligible for the Rule 5 draft. Then he was called up on 6/7/2012 and stayed in Chicago for most of the season, except for a 10-game stretch in August where he was sent down to Charlotte.

QUOTE (glangon @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 06:07 AM) If you are talking hindsight, then lets look at the number 10 pick - Jason Castro, our catching issues would be resolved if we drafted him. Or how about the number 19 pick Andrew Cashner who has pitched really well recently with the Padres. The supplemental picks that year included Lance Lynn who is pitching really well for the Cardinals and a certain left handed third baseman called Conor Gillaspie. If you could predict these crap shoots then you'd be in a job for years to come. For reference Craig Kimbrel went in the 3rd Round, Dee Gordon in the 4th Round Anthony Rendon went in the 27th Round and Yan Gomes went in the 39th Round all of them did better than Kyle Skipworth who was drafted 6th by the Marlins. Castro had a huge 2013, but in 2012 & 2014 combined, Tyler Flowers has put up the exact same WAR that Castro has in 30 less games. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 09:12 PM) I truly don't care about team payrolls cause I have no sympathy for owners who blatantly rip off the fans. That said, I laugh at this Choo contract. Look what he produced this year for all that $$. Owners of sports teams are so stupid. They set the market for this crap. THE CASE FOR CHOO -- Rangers signed him to 7 year, 130 mill deal last winter (hilarious). He's finished for the season in which he hit .242 with 13 home runs, 40 RBIs. So is some advanced-stat lover going to tell me his on base percentage of .340 makes him worth that cash?? In football, he'd be cut so fast this offseason it'd make your head spin. And those "ripped-off" fans will b**** and moan about the "Cheap" owners if they don't spend the money on top talent. If you want top talent immediately, you have to pay top dollar for it. Otherwise a team may have to go through several years of growing pains, then half the fanbase gets restless anyway. Plus, general managers are often hired to be fired. Do you think Daniels cares about the last 2-3 years of the Choo & Fielder contracts? If they go horribly, he'll probably have another job by then anyway.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 10:41 PM) It's amazing how well their main prospects have been in the minors this year, outside of Almora. Hopefully these guys flop in the majors. They have hit a lot of home runs, that's for sure.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 10:01 PM) It's never going to happen but I don't even know what I would do if Evans, Brunson, and Thomas went to Illinois. I would probably paint everything I own orange. Everything. Now that I got that out of the way, feeling really good about getting one of Brunson/Evans and being stoked about finally getting our PG of the future. You own stuff that isn't already orange? Between my Illini and Bears fandom, there is very little non-orange in my closet. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 09:25 PM) OK. It just drives me crazy is all. I'd let those 3 guys go and go for an all new crew. If I had to keep one, it'd be Putnam I guess. With all due respect, Beckham is a great argument against advanced stats. You can't tell me he was valuable to the White Sox in any way during his tenure. You can't tell me we couldn't have had a different second baseman every one of those years with the same impact on the team. Some minimum salary free agent each year. I mean, cmon. If Beckham is considered valuable in any way, that advanced stat is just WRONG. Seriously. There has to be some value to the eye test and the common stat. Beckham was a lousy No. 8 draft pick. If he's better than most, than teams have drafted poorly at No. 8 that is FOR SURE. Enough is enough. How can anybody say Beckham was valuable in any way? He was a decent to good fielder who couldn't hit a lick. Why do we need WAR to tell us some fib?? That's exactly what WAR tells us. His defense gave him some value every year and other than his rookie year, his hitting was negative value. -

The majority owner of the Texas Rangers is the 296th richest person in America with a net worth of $1.9 billion. For some reason I doubt he's very stupid.

Brandon Meriweather suspended for two games for yet another dirty hit. At some point he just needs to banned from the league, he's a liability to injure every other player. -

QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 24, 2014 -> 04:44 PM) So Prater just got suspended 4 games for being an alcoholic. Odd. If he hadn't gotten behind the wheel drunk, then the NFL would have let him be an alcoholic in peace -
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 24, 2014 -> 11:09 PM) Maybe between DH and playing a position, but I simply cannot see how playing 3b or 2b or whatever affects the ability to take your bat and either hit or not hit a pitch coming at you. There's no logic behind it. The game doesn't know. Last week I read an article about Alex Gordon finally living up to the hype. He talked about how his crappy defense at 3B affected his mindset at the plate as well. I guess there could be some truth that the more comfortable you are defensively, it could give you more confidence at the plate

That web gem catch in the 6th was huge, had that dropped the rest of the inning may have changed too. Great run though. That South Korean team looked tough and older than 13.
