2014 TV thread
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 04:36 PM) Silicon Valley was very good this week. But man, how many shows have we seen have a vison quest episode? I'm glad it wasn't the main story in the episode, but just off the top of my head shows to include that event include Entourage, Blue Mountain State, Workaholics, King of the Hill, Eastbound and Down, and now Silicon Valley. Mike Judge did also make King of the Hill, so that much makes sense.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 09:58 PM) What's the better stat, FIP or xFIP? Also, we couldn't even get a lottery ticket prospect for Lindstrom last year. I'm not saying he's a horrible reliever, but he's not a closer and that's not just based on his performance so far this year. Lindstrom's mediocre, he won't net anything great. And they're more or less the same stat except xFIP normalizes home runs based on fly balls. On average, 11% of fly balls are HRs. So instead of counting home runs, 11% of all fly balls the pitcher gives up (outside of infield flies) are counted as home runs in the xFIP calculation. FIP is a better indicator for that year and maybe the next year while xFIP is a better indicator for a year or two in the future.

QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 09:22 PM) Forgive me, what's FIP? Fielding Independent Pitching. It takes Ks, BBs, HBPs, and HRs into account, four things that pitchers have almost total control over. It basically assumes that over small sample sizes, there's too much luck involved and that the pitcher does not have total control over where the ball is hit. Therefore, runs that aren't home runs are not counted against the pitcher. While ERAs may vary year in and year out, FIPs usually stay fairly constant for any given player. There are outliers in the stat (Javy Vazquez and Ricky Nolasco are two examples), but usually, it's pretty accurate in giving a snapshot of a pitcher's true talent.

2014 AL Central catch-all thread
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 21, 2014 -> 08:43 AM) Nice trade Dave, that wasn't an overreaction at all. Can't wait for him to go 3-4 with a run saving catch. Lombardozi's also doing well with the Orioles. Dombrowski's made some awful trades this past off-season.

QUOTE (Jake @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 04:59 PM) Cole is an idiot and should be blamed for that whole ordeal. Pitchers should never talk trash and you never b**** at a guy for admiring a non-home run; he's already been punished by looking like an idiot. Looks like Russell Martin was a little too eager to prove he could fight somebody too. Tempers aside, though, Gomez looks a lot like a guy who is juiced up He does play with Ryan Braun. And he also started hitting for a lot more power once he became a Brewer. So yeah, I don't think that's a coincidence.

Bob Davidson loves ringing hitters up on check swings. Danks did look like he went on that one though. But the De Aza call was horrendous.

QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 04:33 PM) And xFIP down to 3.95. Johnson actually had a 3.5 FIP heading into this game. I gotta imagine that's going up after this one with his 5 walks. Edit: yup, it went up to 3.9.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 04:30 PM) Why was Cole mad? Prolly an inside the Parker if Gomez didn't stare. Pitchers don't like it when you admire your home runs.

White Sox @ Rangers 2:05 PM - CSN
Tank with his first homer.

Huge hit by Semien. Had the Sox not gotten anything that inning, Texas probably would have come back and tied it.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 03:59 PM) Was that even reviewable Only whether or not the pitch hit him.
-
White Sox @ Rangers 2:05 PM - CSN
You gotta wonder why they made check swings non-reviewable.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Apr 20, 2014 -> 03:56 PM) Whaaaat the crap is going on...are they saying he...like...leaned into the pitch? Like Crede in Baltimore several years ago? No, they said he swung at the pitch on the appeal, which he clearly didn't.
-
White Sox @ Rangers 2:05 PM - CSN
So, um, what are they going to review...? All they can review is whether or not the ball hit him.
-
White Sox @ Rangers 2:05 PM - CSN
Check swings should be a part of replay...
-
White Sox @ Rangers 2:05 PM - CSN
lol that's a swing? Bulls***.

White Sox @ Rangers 2:05 PM - CSN
Everything's gone right for the Sox the past inning.

Kouzmanoff's had a bad day at third. Edit: just realized the ball hit the bag, not Kouzmanoff.
