  1. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 04:47 PM) This is nonsense. They're not just civilians. They're asked to do things civilians would never do. Hence, they get some leeway in their decision making. The key word here is “some”. I agree that cops deserve some leeway when dealing with potentially life or death situations, but that does not apply to this particular case. This kid had done NOTHING to suggest he was a threat. He was trying his best to follow the officer’s insane requests. He was already on the ground with his hands in front of him. The officer in question had body armor, an assault rifle, and multiple units of backup. There is zero excuse whatsoever for not just approaching this guy and frisking him. None whatsoever. This officer was simply another John Rambo wanna-be and it shows in how he handled the situation and by the complete lack of emotion/reaction after gunning this poor guy down.
  2. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 04:13 PM) I first read this story last week from Connor Friedersdorf and I'll never watch the video. I cannot believe he was acquitted. This was not a "snap decision". They had this guy here following orders MULTIPLE times. And now the family will go to civil court, certainly get restitution from the tax payers. I honestly was nervous for the guy just watching the video. The cop basically tells him “if you f*** up at all I’m going to shoot you” and then proceeds to play the craziest game of Simon Says ever all while having an assault rifle pointed at the suspect. I honestly think a lot of people would have been shot in that situation which to me proves the cop is to blame for this guy losing his life.
  3. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 02:10 PM) He could publicly tell McConnell that he won't vote for a single Republican agenda item as long as Moore's in the Senate. No offense but that’s absurd and a disservice to his constituents who had nothing to do with Moore getting voted in.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 12:50 PM) I am guessing they mean in the international market. The other side is that it would also set Ohtani free again. Is a one year ban in the international market that big of a deal if there’s a good chance you won’t caught? I would hope they have something bigger in mind if they’re trying a “scared straight” approach here.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 12:46 PM) Jeff Passan‏Verified account @JeffPassan 1h1 hour ago Jeff Passan Retweeted Buster Olney Multiple officials have talked specifically about a one-year ban for any Ohtani malfeasance. And between that and the reputation hit that accompanies, the league expects it to be an effective scared-straight tactic. With upward of $200M in marginal value available, we shall see. One year ban for the GM?
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 07:33 PM) Here is conscientious objector Jeff Flake who totally announced a month ago "I will not be complicit!" proudly on the Senate floor photographed 2 days ago sitting next to accused sexual assaulter Donald Trump while Donald Trump defended Roy Moore. Complicitly. Trump is already elected, Moore is not. Not much Flake can do about Donald that he hasn’t already done.
  7. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 11:39 AM) Police murdering citizens and facing no consequences can happen to white people, too. https://twitter.com/ShaunKing/status/939014...src=twsrc%5Etfw Don't watch unless you want to see a man murdered while crying for his life and crawling towards the police as instructed. The officer was just acquitted. I think people occasionally give the police too much s*** over these shootings, but this one and the Minnesota one are simply unbelievable. Why couldn’t they just handcuff this dude? Why did they force him to crawl to them? They’re carrying assault rifles, if he pulled out a weapon while they approached him they would have been able to unload multiple shots before the suspect could even fire one. This guy definitely deserves a murder charge IMO.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 8, 2017 -> 12:01 PM) Yeah he pretty much would need to be active on the 25 man roster by July 1, give or take a couple of days. I love the idea of taking him personally. Maybe I’m reading it wrong, but I think it implies as long as he ends the season on the 25 man roster the 90 day rule would rollover into 2019.
  9. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 11:44 PM) If you look at his social media he has just started throwing from distance. I would say he would be back in time to get his required 90 active days in this year. BTW, just this note on Burdi in the Baseball America article SouthSider posted: If that’s true I’m even more in favor of grabbing Burdi.
  10. I’m definitely against moving any of our top pitching prospects. We need to do everything in our power to develop a formidable 1-2-3 internally, as buying high-end pitching via free agency is typically a costly decision in the long-run. And quite simply, the more high upside arms we have in the system, the more likely we’ll be able to develop that staff. Hansen is most definitely a key part of that.
  11. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 11:44 PM) If you look at his social media he has just started throwing from distance. I would say he would be back in time to get his required 90 active days in this year. Then I’m all for taking him.
  12. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 10:27 PM) Rumors leak out about Sox discussing Abreu but nothing comes to fruition. Sox trade for a Rule 5 pick and select RHP Nick Burdi and LHP Nestor Cortes. Is Nick Burdi available? If so, what’s his current ETA of coming back?
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 05:02 PM) Until this year he looked like he was in a steady decline. This year he suddenly turned back around, prior to that he looked like he'd be finished as a hitter before this contract. 2016 wasn't just bad luck, he was a seriously worse hitter. I'm ok blaming that on injury and saying he hits when he's healthy, but that means he had a first half long nagging injury. Wasn’t he also dealing with personal issues involving his family? Didn’t his season take off after seeing his son?
  14. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 04:44 PM) I think it makes them stronger in the short term but weaker in the long term. Yeah, they might have Stanton, but they would probably be pretty locked in to their roster in terms of salary because of it and might lose some guys that they can't resign or extend. We’re talking about the Dodgers right? They have almost limitless amounts of money. The only thing that might scare them off is the luxury tax, but I don’t see Stanton’s deal ever being that big of a burden to them. Most other teams? Sure, just not the Dodgers.
  15. We’re talking about a top 5 pick, it’s not an either or thing that high in the draft. I would expect a plus athlete with solid baseball skills even if it’s a high school kid.
  16. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 02:29 PM) https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/making-a-st...-la-trade-work/ This article brings up the idea of the Dodgers and Marlins bringing in a third team to take some money off the Dodgers books. It mentions the Rockies, but I would love it for the Sox to do this. Take on Adrian Gonzalez and get something of worth for it (Pederson, Grandal, prospects etc.) while creating more trade demand for Avi (Giants) and Abreu (Cardinals) and still having the possibility that Gonzalez could rebound and be flipped. Plus it would have the added bonus of hurting the Cubs chances of getting to the WS again. Don’t really want to do anything that makes the best team in baseball stronger.
  17. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 02:31 PM) Why would he want to sign onto that deal? His advisors would basically say “Jose, the risk you avoid by signing this is absolutely minimal. There is very little upside to you signing a 4 year extension at the juncture.” He’s basically saying he’s concerned he won’t be able to sign a two year deal when his contract with us runs out? If we wants to stay with us, he may have to take a deal like that. That’s kind of the whole point. Sox positon it as sign an extension now or we’ll have no choice but to consider moving him. Abreu then can decide what’s most important to him. And it’s not like a 4/$80M is a slap in the face. He’s better off long-term by waiting if he maintains his production, but if he’s happy here then that’s a pretty decent deal for him.
  18. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 12:10 PM) Exactly^ Why not evaluate then if we need to resign Abreu? It's not like we wouldn't be able to afford him at age 33. I just don't think we need to extend him now. I'll keep saying this, but it has nothing to do with affording him and everything to do with not wanting to lock him up into his late 30s. If I can lock Jose up right now to a 4/$80M deal for his age 31 to 34 seasons I think that's makes a ton of sense for us for a variety of reasons that have been well documented. And even if a Burger or a Sheets is pushing for a spot by 2020 or 2021, Jose's contract should be perfectly moveable and might even have some surplus value left. On the flip side, if he reaches free agency at age 33 and is still productive, I have no doubt he'll get at least a four year deal. Now you're either committing big dollars to his age 33 to 36 seasons (and maybe more), relying on a young player that may or may not be ready, or be forced to to sign or trade for what is likely to be a lessor player. And this is happening right when you want to be ready to compete. I'd much rather have Abreu under control (without a crazy long term deal) and worry about having too many good players when that actually becomes an issue.
  19. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 11:53 AM) AVISAIL GARCIA jk Lol...hey I'm glad he proved me wrong. At least I didn't want to cut him on opening day like a certain someone!
  20. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 10:45 AM) Well how long do you think it'll take to build a dominant bullpen ? You absolutely need one to be serious about contending. That means 3 or possibly 4 guys the Sox don't have yet. I know it's pretty illogical to sign RP's to more than 2 or 3 years but the bullpen is my biggest worry for when the Sox start contending. I suppose this year could be all about trying the scrap heap relievers but guys who produce like we had like Robertson, Swarzak and Kahnle are going to be very hard to find. While the bullpen right now is filled with question marks, I think we have quite a few arms in place that could fill key roles within the next year or so. Assuming Burdi comes back healthy, he's pretty nuch a lock to become a solid high leverage reliever. Same goes for Nate Jones, although his record of health is becoming more concerning. Vieira has significant potential and Fulmer could be a multi-inning weapon. Guys like Stephens or Adams could also fill a role. If you can get three quality relievers out of that group, that's a pretty good starting point from the right side. From the left-side, just got to hope one of Bummer or Frye (or maybe even Clark) can at least be a solid second lefty. But if all that does happen, we can then go out and add two quality relievers in free agency next year (one lefty, one right) to put the finishing touches on what could be a pretty damn good bullpen.
  21. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 7, 2017 -> 10:44 AM) Keeping him isn't a terrible thing, although $35 - 40 million over two seasons isn't exactly a cheap veteran to keep around for a rebuilding club. If it comes down to accepting a mediocre offer for the sake of trading him, I'd much rather keep him and ride the two seasons out. If things start to click in 2019, we might be happy to still have him? I still think there's a decent chance we're competitive in 2019. Obviously we'll need things to go right on the development side with our young players, but if that happens and with a couple key free agent signings I think we'll have enough talent in place to make a wild card run. Once the key young guys (Moncada, Eloy, Giolito, Lopez, Kopech, etc.) get through their growing pains this team should take a big leap forward. I want a proven middle-of-the-order bat like Abreu in place when that happens.
  22. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 6, 2017 -> 02:43 PM) Would love for San Diego or Dodgers to land him. Why would you want the best team in baseball with almost unlimited financial resources to get him??
  23. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 6, 2017 -> 02:23 PM) Why isnt this its own thread? There are threads for signing clowns we will never hear from again. ?
  24. QUOTE (Dunt @ Dec 6, 2017 -> 12:08 PM) I see no way the Brewers would agree to that deal, but I would be so for it if it happened Just depends on how valuable you believe his defense to be. If he truly is a 2 WAR player going forward, he’s going to provide quite a bit of surplus value over his remaining four years of control. This is just going to be quick and dirty, but let’s say he’s worth $64M (2 WAR x 4 x $8M) but will only get paid $20M over that same period. We’re talking about roughly $44 in surplus value right there. I think that gets you two high upside guys in A+ coming off down years, but again, the Brewers would have to view Sanchez’s defense as being elite.
  25. QUOTE (cjgalloway @ Dec 6, 2017 -> 09:53 AM) I do not see the point one bit at extending him if it is going to cost that much.. Can someone give me a reason why extending a 33 year old 1st basement for 20 million makes sense? Just wait till his contract is up and extend him then if he is producing at 20 mil a year Abreu is not going to sign a 2 year deal when he hits free agency if he’s still producing. So if you think you might want him around in 2020 & 2021, either extend him now through his age 34 season or be prepared to lock him up until he’s 36 and when money becomes more constrained.
