Would Saturday have been Sandlin’s normal slot?

It’s for the existing signing period so probably not much left, although unclear why the Phillies would want it then.

Romo has two options left I believe.

Acuna can’t hit though…maybe that changes or is changing, but so far if he makes a start anywhere he’s a negative value guy. He is a good pinch runner and that’s got some value with these stupid extra inning rules, but he’s got to make major progress with the bat (and soon) to warrant rostering IMO.

He’s been absolutely awful against LHP…maybe that changes with time, but for now he should be at the bottom of the lineup.

I assume Gonzalez can play 3B right? Just hard to use him there with Murakami out.

Hill is a very solid player if used appropriately…I’m not surprised he had value. I still probably would have preferred keeping him over Acuna, but if they are the two last guys on the 26th roster, I guess I get taking this offer now and giving Luisangel a bit more time to see what you have in him.

But why did we give up international slot pool? Hill certainly doesn’t have negative value, so these prospects must be worth something (even if very little). Also, does this clear up a 40 man roster spot then?

I really think we should prioritize a rental SP over a controllable one. IMO, this is an area where we should spend some real money on in the offseason so we can avoid using our best prospects via trade. As such, focusing on rental SPs at the deadline would be the preferable approach, especially ones who may have sizable salaries and would come a bit cheaper in terms of prospect cost. One name that comes to mind is Sonny Gray. Boston is a disaster this season and Gray is in the last year of his deal. He’s effectively owed $21M if you factor in his buyout for next year and the money the Cardinals are paying. Unless the Red Sox were to eat money, you’re looking at $7M of salary to take on. Would Reinsdorf absorb this amount of money? I’d hope so with attendance likely above expectations. Is Gray the right level of impact and fit? I’d need to do more diligence on why his K rate is down so much and what kind of teammate he is, but conceptually he’s exactly what I’d be looking for in a rotation upgrade.

The challenge for those two and Pallette is going to be the roster crunch. The Sox are going to be very carful not to add more guys to the 40 man if they have to potentially DFA them a few weeks / months later. At some point, one of them could force the issue, but my guess is they will go through all other options already on the 40 man before doing so.

I said it in another thread, but I view the bullpen as being five deep at the moment in Taylor, Dominguez, Hudson, Newcomb, & Davis. After that, it’s a complete crapshoot. Given Hicks’ salary, once healthy, he’ll probably be given a chance until the trade deadline, but if that BB rate doesn’t improve drastically, then he needs to be DFA’d and replaced. Leasure is also hurt and I don’t think we can rely on him even if he comes back healthy at some point. And I have little faith in the lefty trio of Eisert, Gilbert, & Murphy to deliver right now. I didn’t mention Richard, but I think he gets replaced with Fedde or maybe Kay long-term once some of our SPs come back from injury. I actually think Kay as a swingman eventually could work well for us. If so, that’s two middle relief that would need to be filled if everyone else stays healthy. Internally, there are some options potentially, but none of them are high confidence. If Gonzalez can ever get healthy again (no idea his status), he may be one of two exceptions as he was pitching his ass off before injury and has the stuff to match it. Sandlin is the other if we’re willing to forgo him as SP depth. If not, I really think we have to go outside the org to fill these holes.
