2017 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 20, 2017 -> 02:32 PM) Truth being told, bringing Danks back wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Let him suck up innings and teach some of these kids how to act like a big leaguer. I know his career took a big downward turn after the shoulder surgery, but he was the consummate professional. He took his turn every five days, he took ownership of his body of work, he didn't try to blame someone else for his downfall, and he never caused any problems while he was here. Predict the 2017 Opening Day Roster
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 20, 2017 -> 11:46 AM) What's the point of carrying both Leury and Yolmer? Aren't they redundant? Is it just because both are out of options? Leury can also be a backup OF. If Leury comes even remotely close to his AAA batting line, he'd be a backup like Saladino, but with CF ability. Sanchez, I just don't see it at this point. His only hope of sticking is Frazier getting moved and Saladino becoming the full-time 3B.

White Sox Scout Yankees for Potential Q Trade
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 19, 2017 -> 02:57 PM) I've been reading the recent Fangraphs articles about the top prospects and future values ( http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2017-top-100-prospects/ and http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/valuing-the...-100-prospects/ ) and I am convinced that when the Sox do trade Quintana that obtaining position player prospects is very important. The thing I get from these articles is that positional player talent is more valuable and easier to predict upside than pitchers because pitchers get injured more and low upside pitching is more valuable than low upside hitters. The Sox have received mostly high end pitchers in the Sale and Eaton trades and while that is very good it appears organization are aware that pitching is more of a crap shoot than hitters. This appears to be the difficulty with trading with the Yankees or Astros because they likely aren't budging on positional player talent because they are more predictable and, also, in some cases , plan to replace older players . The best bet at the trade deadline appears to lie with either the Yankees or Astro's contending but still needing a starting pitcher to make them World Series candidates. This is not news of course. But it also appears to me that even though a trade with the Cubs would seem unlikely ,they have to be considered among the teams that may end up needing starting pitching help and also have good position talent. Lackey is likely to regress sooner rather than later. Lester isn't getting any younger though is very consistently good . Arrieta showed a few cracks in the armor and Hendricks seemingly came out of nowhere to dominate. They just can't be as good as they were last year. All it will take is a likely Lackey regression, 5th starter problems and some regression from their excellence of 2016 and 1 injury . Unfortunately with their defense a lot of regression from anyone besides Lackey may not be likely. A heavy workload from the last season could also effect them. But since the baseball gods are fickle and with the Cubs having some high end positional talent it would behoove the Sox to consider trading with the Cubs if the situation warrants. Hahn & Co. cannot afford to overlook the Cubs just because they compete in the same city with them. With the Cubs, my price starts with Baez + Jiminez, if Baez/Zobrist are bouncing around the diamond.

World Baseball Classic
QUOTE (Jake @ Mar 19, 2017 -> 02:47 PM) I can't imagine any other team is as harmed by non-participation as Team USA. In particular, our pitching staff seems bafflingly bad. Here are non-participating Americans listed by 2016 WAR: 1. Clayton Kershaw 2. Noah Syndergaard 3. Max Scherzer 4. Rick Porcello 5. Justin Verlander 6. Chris Sale 7. Corey Kluber 8. Madison Bumgarner 9. David Price 10. Kyle Hendricks 11. Jon Lester 12. Jake Arrieta 13. Jon Gray and then you finally get to the first American WBC participant, Stroman. And then we can look at relievers specifically: We do have the best, Andrew Miller. Yay! And then... 1. Addison Reed (had to double take at that one) 2. Zach Britton 3. Tyler Thornburg 4. Will Harris 5. Mark Melancon and then we get to Nate Jones and after that, about 10 more until you get to Luke Gregerson. Of course the point isn't that 2016 WAR should be the main criterion for selection, but we're just not anywhere close to assembling our best. And let's think about some of the position players missing: 1. Mike Trout 2. Kris Bryant 3. Mookie Betts 4. Josh Donaldson 5. Corey Seager 6. Adam Eaton 7. Brian Dozier and then Ian Kinsler and Brandon Crawford, a few spots and you get Murphy and Arenado. The outfield stands out, though—why does Team USA have Christian Yelich batting 3rd? McCutchen probably shouldn't be getting the time, but I understand how some may not be inclined to penalize him as much for last year when he had been so sensational for years beforehand. Either way, I find it galling that the US has the world's two best players (Trout and Kershaw) and neither is out there. They have their reasons that are perfectly rational, but it doesn't mean I have to like it. It's also bad for the tournament. On one hand, nobody will like it around the world if the US wins every time...it has to be competitive. But few would deny that the US has the most talent in the world, so it delegitimizes the tournament if Team USA does poorly each time, as it has pre-2017. This is really one of the more frustrating things about it. I understand why players don't go, but it would be amazing to actually put out the top teams.

White Sox Scout Yankees for Potential Q Trade
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Mar 16, 2017 -> 12:06 PM) Agreed. I have also seen deals headlined by Jorge Mateo which I think is crazy. Either the deal starts with Torres or Frazier AND Rutherford. If the Yankees aren't willing to do that, then it's their loss. I think Frazier/Rutherford is the way to go, a la all of my trade proposals.

OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 16, 2017 -> 08:28 AM) The Republicans are in such a corner here, there's no way to really win. This new plan does nothing to lower overall costs to taxpayers, is harder on the poor and the elderly, and will see insurance go away for millions. You've got a conservative group who think even that is too close to ACA, and moderates who see the opposite, all in the same party. Compromise would mean, essentially, sticking with ACA. What is the winning scenario here for the GOP in Congress? And for Trump? How do they lower costs without throwing a ton of people out of coverge? Winning scenario: Repeal Obamacare, replace with Affordable Care Act

3/15 vs Royals
QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 16, 2017 -> 09:47 AM) Even though he may not even be a part of it, JR does seem to value ATTEMPTING to get bonafide young stars when they hit market. He won't go after Mark Teixera or Soriano, but when an A Rod or big foreign FA came out, we have bid higher than the 6 for 68 number. I just find the 6/68 funny since that was Abreu's deal.

White Sox Scout Yankees for Potential Q Trade
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 15, 2017 -> 03:29 PM) Those players would be better than just about anyone in our system that wasn't acquired since the 2016 draft. In a hypothetical of Frazier, Rutherford, Sheffield, Andujar (the absolute best I think Hahn could get without Torres) then our rankings would be... Moncada Giolito Kopech Frazier Rutherford Lopez Sheffield Collins Fulmer Hansen Burdi Basabe Andujar Those additions are nothing to sneeze at and boost the three org farm needs (LHP, OF, 3B)
