KW "We're a lot closer than the record indicates"
Quin replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Here's the thing... We got Spencer Adams with the 2nd pick. He's looking like a RHP with A+ stuff and an absurd K/BB ratio. People wanted to sign Ubaldo Jimenez, who was hot garbage, and would have resulted in the Sox missing Adams. It's not "don't sign FAs to keep draft picks." It's "don't sign s***ty FAs to keep draft picks." -
QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Oct 3, 2014 -> 12:24 AM) Seriously, why the Royal hate? AL Central team Have beat up on us the past few years There are other reasons. That being said, for the AL I'd only take the O's over them.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Oct 1, 2014 -> 08:01 AM) It was like a Greek tragedy. I felt really bad for him that he couldn't find a way into a 12-inning game. Honestly, objectively, that was a bummer. This QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 1, 2014 -> 08:11 AM) Good luck to Adam. I know his time here was quantifiablely awful, but he was always a stand up guy. He was an easy guy to pull for, because he was a good person and a great teammate. He never tried to blame anyone or anything else. He was a positive influence on a lot of the kids in the clubhouse. Hopefully the next stage of his life is good to him. And this

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 1, 2014 -> 07:34 AM) I absolutely loathe the Kansas City Royals so I took no pleasure in seeing the one guy I wanted to find success and have an opportunity to do something get eliminated. This.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 1, 2014 -> 02:18 AM) OH and by the way this was a victory for Hawk. Sabermetric Beane loses to old school, Mr. Bunt, Ned. Take that, Sabes. Ned Yost is a f***ing idiot that lucked into a win.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Sep 30, 2014 -> 08:25 PM) Come on Balta, Bruce had a horrible 2014 season, but do you actually think he forgot how to play baseball or suddenly aged seven years? From what I've read he was never 100% this season due to a knee injury. As long as he can fully recover in the offseason, I see very little reason expect much less than his pre-2014 performance. If so, trading him for Chris Beck would be a firable offense IMO. If I'm Hahn, Bruce is definitely a guy I go hard after. I'd be willing to give up three guys in the 6 to 15 range for him without hesitation. Not sure that will be enough, but I think it's worth a shot in the off-chance the Reds are desperate to rebuild and no-one is offering more. So you'd give up something like Montas/Danish, Ravelo, and Sanchez for him? Because I sure as hell wouldn't. Our system is no longer so atrocious that our 6-15 guys are worthless.
-
I'd rather give Bassitt a look and wait for Montas and Danish than spend $100+ on James Shields through his age 38 season.
-
Ah, unable to watch in China and my friend told me Shields gave up the six runs. Now I see Ned Yost did Ned Yost things. If people think no Robin = Sox make playoffs, no Yost = Royals best team ever
-
Well, so much for Big Game James

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 30, 2014 -> 09:14 AM) I'd be surprised. He was quite effective out of the bullpen this year and he'll cost less than that of a guy like Belisario or a Downs. If he comes back next year and is ineffective, they can just get rid of him by whatever means is best. Catapult.

QUOTE (daggins @ Sep 29, 2014 -> 09:15 PM) It was a stipulation of the contract. Compensation goes up to 26.5 mil if he gets super two status. His contract is so ludicrously under market that I am not even close to upset about this. Q's contract may be the best one Hahn ever negotiated, right up there with Sale's.

I'd definitely kick the tires on CarGo, Ackley (Mariners take Dayan), Grandal or Dominic Brown. Grandal would likely serve as backup to Flowers unless he won the spot. Brown would be a primary DH due to his defense. I'm also really interested in Maeda for the right price.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 28, 2014 -> 11:55 PM) Here are my grades for this season. I'll give the team a C-minus though I wouldn't argue with D. Abreu: A-plus. He had 36 HRS, 107 RBI. Everybody likey. Beckham: D. He stunk and his tenure was blah. (Sanchez in 27 games hit .247; Semien hit .233 in 63 games; both get Incompletes). The eye test tells me Semien will be a good player. Alexei: A. He hit .273 with 74 RBI. Gillaspie: B. I wouldn't argue B-plus. He hit .282 with 57 RBI in 130 games. Viciedo: D. He hit 21 homers and only drove in 58, barely hitting .230. He's an underachiever to date. Eaton: A. We all know he was great. A. Garcia: B to B-minus. Hit .250 in 45 games. Showed a lot of guts to come back so quickly. Flowers: C. Hit .240 with 15 homers. 50 RBIs. Paulie: I'd like to give him an incomplete as a favor to my idol. If I have to give a grade I'd give him a D. Dunn: 20 home runs in 360 at bats. That's not so horrendous. I'll give him a C this year. For his Sox career a big fat D. Moises Sierra, Danks and guys like that didn't play a lot. Not a big fan of that duo. Quintana: B. 3.32 ERA is fine. Sale: A-plus. He's good. Danks: C. He was 11-11? Not bad for an 89-loss team. I realize we don't care about wins and losses of pitchers anymore. Noesi: C. 8-11 record. Carroll: C-. Was 5-10 I love everything about him except his stuff. I'll give all the relievers a D except Petricka and Putnam who get Cs. And Bella of course gets an F. I can't bring myself to mention each guy. Robin: He gets a C. The team was a couple games over .500 at a fairly late date then sucked. I wouldn't argue C-. Hahn: C. He improved the team some but the team is still lousy and not a contender. Jerry Reinsdorf: D. No sense of urgency from the big guy. That's it for now. I think we have some good players. At this time, I'm really down on our bullpen and down on Viciedo. Soxtalk posters: C. I wouldn't argue B-. Still a reluctance to start new threads with people thinking a new thread is evil for some reason. People love the catchall threads more than new threads. Not a lot of activity on the baseball board. Lot of lurkers need to start posting more. The new posters were awesome this season. Of my own posting I'd give myself a B-. I put passion into my posts even if many of you despise me. Cheers to the White Sox. ...I actually agree with these for the most part. I'd give Q a B+ or A-, Noesi a B for what was expected of him, Putnam an A, Petrick a B, no grade for Reinsdorf.

Anyone know where I can see the tribute videos they played from Pods, Ozzie, Dye, Rose, Buehrle, etc.?

Sox land two on best in season waiver claims

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Sep 26, 2014 -> 04:25 PM) I let my Sox bias show by voting for Noesi. I'm really unimpressed with what he and Cooper have accomplished in such a short amount of time. Especially for a guy that was thrown away like trash by two teams. Wait, do you mean impressed? -
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 27, 2014 -> 02:14 AM) When VMArt becomes mediocre you let me know because now he is so far above mediocre he'd have to go blind in one eye to get there. Or have one small wrist injury and then it snowballs because of his age. I would have figured Paulie to age better than VMart, but as has been said everything people are saying about Martinez could have been said about Konerko. In the first half of 2012, Paulie looked like he had a HoF push left in him. 500 homers at the least. Then injury. And give me a break with bringing up Fisk. He's one of the all-time great catchers and a baseball legend. He is not the standard.

It's about that time of the year again...

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Sep 27, 2014 -> 02:35 AM) Hmmm winning the division vs. slobbering over a draft pick that is likely to not help the Sox at all ever. So close. 1) He's being sarcastic. 2) We have no idea if that draft pick will help the Sox or not. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 26, 2014 -> 10:31 PM) Reading the comments on Erik Johnson made me wonder something else ... Is Felipe Paulino one of the top 20 worst acquisitions in modern team history? Is Keppinger? Off the top of my head I'd say some of the bad ones: Bobby Bonds, Dan Pasqua, Ron Blomberg, Felipe Paulino, Keppinger as well as Don Kessinger, Ron Santo. We've had some bad ones. Felipe Paulino cost a minuscule amount as a 5th starter. Not even nearly a bad acquisition. He was also completely offset by Noesi. Keppinger, yes.

In the past two days I have sat 10 feet away from Maria Sharapova and Rafael Nadal and talked to them. Dear god.
