  1. I think throwing the tarp out on the field while the team that's behind has the tying run on base is an absolute last resort, regardless of whether the Sox are the team that's ahead or behind.
  2. Radar makes it look like it's a couple hours or so from being playable. If they aren't calling the game now, it's going to be a very late night.
  3. No, the rules about what happens once a game is called is not subject to anybody's opinion or discretion. Now, there's nothing stopping MLB from calling the umpires during the delay and telling them to wait as long as possible before calling the game, but once the umpires call the game that's the end.
  4. That's why 90% of Soxtalk would be better at that job than Rongey. We know that this game would be a complete game and would not have to be finished another day.

WGN and WCIU games can be picked up over the air if you live close enough. Not aware of any way to get CSN without a cable or satellite provider. I've always wondered why cable stations aren't selling their product directly to their consumers via the internet. Seems like they could increase their profits but cutting out the middle man.

  8. AL Best Record: Texas NY Yankees -1 SOX -4½ Tampa Bay -4½ AL Central: SOX Detroit -2½ AL Wild Card: Tampa Bay +1½ Oakland Baltimore Detroit -1 LA Angels -2½ 8/25 Games: OAK @ TB 1:10 MIN @ TEX 4:05 TOR @ BAL 7:05 NYY @ CLE 7:05 LAA @ DET 7:05 SEA @ SOX 7:10
  9. Sox don't have to worry about it. If Myers finishes enough games to trigger the clause, they can just trade him to the Dodgers--the Dodgers will take on any contract.
  10. ESPN now reporting that this trade is a done deal. Every player involved in the deal can be traded because he fits one of the following categories: (1) Cleared waivers, and thus can be traded to anybody (2) Was claimed by one of the teams involved in the trade (3) Isn't on a team's 40-man roster, and thus doesn't have to go through waivers Also, since the Red Sox aren't going anywhere this year, if there's a player they want who is on the Dodgers' 40-man roster but didn't clear waivers, they could have him included as a PTBNL. I get the Red Sox wanting to shed a bunch of salary, but I have a hard time seeing them being competitive in 2013.
  11. I'm pretty sure Wise was standing on second when the ball was caught (or not caught), so the run counts either way. The only difference is whether Konerko gets a hit or a sac fly.
  12. So we're all done complaining about Myers finishing games now, right?
  13. mlb.tv was terrible for me all night as well. Thankfully, MLB Network showed the end, so I saw it, but I'm still not entirely sure what I saw.
  14. In a 162 game season, I don't think it would be a big deal, because the five best starters you can get should be your five starters no matter which side they throw from. The only potential detriment is if you find yourself in a postseason series against a team that hits lefties significantly better than righties. Based on this year, those teams are Boston (43 OPS points), and Minnesota (20).
  15. Last 30 Days (minimum 5 innings) ERA/WHIP Reed 1.93/1.18 Jones 2.57/2.29 Thornton 2.79/1.03 Myers 3.21/1.14 Crain 3.27/1.00 Humber 3.79/1.37 (includes 2 starts) Santiago 5.06/1.69 So, not the best, but definitely holding his own.
  16. The only AL team that can really afford to claim him is the Yankees, and they already have Teixeira. Plus, they had the best record in the AL at the time so claiming him wouldn't serve the purpose of blocking him from any other AL teams.
  17. The odds would be in his favor quite a bit if Vargas is pitching his 15th inning of the evening.
  18. Quite possibly the most irrelevant stat ever posted.
  19. Akin's statement wasn't stating a policy opinion, it was stating a "fact" that was medically incorrect. He may be basing his abortion position on incorrect data, but that doesn't automatically mean that the position itself is faulty. If somebody tells you the Cubs suck because the earth is flat, the fact that he's wrong about the earth being flat doesn't change the reality that the Cubs do actually suck.
  20. Anybody have any idea when the last time was that a Sunday did not have a full slate of games scheduled? I mean before the season started, games rescheduled a few days in advance due to an impending hurricane don't count.
  21. Live coverage: http://newyork.cbslocal.com/live-video/
  22. What do Alex Zulle, Jan Ullrich, Joseba Beloki, Andreas Kloden, and Ivan Basso all have in common? They all now own TDF titles (Ullrich with 3 of them). Somebody convince me that those guys were any less doped up than Lance and then I'll agree that taking the titles away from Lance makes any sense.
  23. AL Best Record: Texas NY Yankees -1 Tampa Bay -3½ SOX -4½ AL Central: SOX Detroit -1½ AL Wild Card: Tampa Bay +2½ Oakland Detroit Baltimore LA Angels -2½ 8/24 Games: TOR @ BAL 7:05 NYY @ CLE 7:05 LAA @ DET 7:05 OAK @ TB 7:10 MIN @ TEX 8:05 SEA @ SOX 8:10
  24. Would love to see this go 17+ innings and burn through Detroit's bullpen. Baltimore probably wouldn't mind either, since they get Toronto next.
  25. Offensively, yes, but if you lose Cabrera or Fielder you make the defense better while making the offense worse. If you lose Jackson, you make both the offense and defense worse.
