  1. Lou Holtz endorsed Donald Trump today. As someone who worked for him for a year and hold him in higher regard than pretty much any other man I know, this troubles me quite a bit.
  2. Cruz/Trump supporters keep calling Kasich a liberal. I don't know any liberals who would claim Kasich.
  3. Money may be no object, but to this point teams, even ones with the most resources, have been unwilling to DFA or even bench bad players with huge contracts, so while the Cubs may not be hurt by the amount of money they have to pay Heyward, they can be hurt by being unable to put anybody, at any price, in RF to replace him, for a very long time.
  4. Buehrle has been approached by a couple bears and probably some elk as well.
  5. They may have long stretches that are under .500, but with Sale and Quintana in the rotation a losing streak of 5 or more games is pretty unlikely.
  6. If ESPN didn't have rights to most of the college basketball/football slate, I probably wouldn't watch it at all.
  7. Yeah, if the Sox get that far, good luck beating them in a playoff series where the rotation goes Sale-Q-Latos-Rodon-Sale-Q-Latos. Even if you assume you beat Rodon, which isn't a given, you still have to win 3 games against the other three.
  8. I haven't read the details of their projection system, but I would think the projected win total is the median of computer-simulated outcomes. So there is a 50% chance the Sox win 90+ games, meaning that there is a 16% chance that the Sox win less than 90 games but still make the playoffs.
  9. I've said this in pretty much all of the 2,518 Hawk threads that we've had, but I'll say it again. I don't dislike Hawk, I dislike the role he has/had. The homer guy who gets all excited for your team should be the color analyst, not the play-by-play guy. The play-by-play guy should be a professional broadcaster who has had some training in the discipline and preferably no connection to the team other than having been hired for that specific job. The mistake was made long ago when he was given the PBP job in the first place, but once that happened they had to ride it out. At least they have now they have learned and not repeated the mistake.
  10. Yankees are really bad, but the other teams on the right should have a good chance of winning at least 2 of 3. As for the Sox sweep, you must have forgotten that the black hole in the rotation pitches Tuesday.
  11. Our summer "vacation" consists of a day at my aunt's lake house in Michigan, three days at my Mom's in South Bend, and a day at US Cellular.
  12. Nate Silver's fivethirtyeight.com has gotten into the playoff odds business. Through games of May 1, they have the Sox as the 8th best team in MLB, 3rd best in the AL, and best in the division, giving them a 66% chance of making the playoffs, 47% to win the division, and 6% to win the World Series. They also put odds on upcoming games. They take each team's rating and then adjust for starting pitcher and location. For this week: Quintana 55% vs Wright Danks 46% vs Buchholz Rodon 54% vs Owens Latos 59% vs Duffey Sale 66% vs Nolaso Quintana 66% vs Berrios
  13. Among many other things, in 2013, Boehner made a deal with the Democrats to avoid a shutdown. Cruz reneged on the deal and rounded up enough Senators to cause the shutdown. You may recall me mentioning the shutdown once or twice. Cruz takes the position that only the farthest right option is acceptable on any issue and is unwilling to ever compromise. I think he would be an even worse President than Trump.
  14. Chris Sale has 6 wins. Atlanta Braves have 5 wins (but are leading the Cubs in the 9th).
  15. Draft trivia: Who got drafted first? A) any player from Michigan B) a kicker
  16. He's out for all of 2016. Check out the Texans though. They've collected two ND players so far.
  17. I recall there being some sort of problem getting these games at Baltimore in last year . . .
  18. 2.24 ERA, 1st in AL, 0.96 better than 2nd 5 shutouts, 1st in AL, 3 more than 2nd 17 quality starts, 1st in AL, 1 more than 2nd .207 BAA, 1st in AL, .019 better than 2nd .269 Opp OBP, 1st in AL, .009 better than 2nd .297 Opp SLG, 1st in AL, .064 better than 2nd .566 Opp OPS, 1st in AL, .078 better than 2nd 0.50 HR/9, 1st in AL, 0.17 better than 2nd 1.03 WHIP, 1st in AL, 0.06 better than 2nd 3.06 FIP, 1st in AL, 0.34 better than 2nd 4.5 WAR, 1st in AL, 1.4 better than 2nd When I started this thread, it was to document what were ridiculous numbers, but what I was certain were unsustainable. I never imagined the numbers would still look similar 8 days later.
  19. The VP is usually chosen before the convention, but after the nomination is locked up. It's unheard of for a candidate who isn't even the frontrunner to name a VP.
  20. When someone gets called up while the Sox are in Toronto, passport issues are always a possibility as to why one guy over another.
