  1. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Dec 10, 2011 -> 07:15 AM) Sox weren't able to extend an offer because there's a chance he could've accepted There's no reason to spend tons of $ on Mark right now. We dont need him, b/c this isn't going to be a year we go for the championship. I'd rather spend that $ in 2012, 2013. I'm glad they didn't too. What happens if they came up with an offer just below the Marlins. Then it puts Buehrle in the position of looking like the bad guy signing with the highest bidder and abandoning the "home town discount" crap every team hopes their fan favorite players sign. Of course, he may have returned -- but I don't feel it's right for Buehrle to have his last big contract for this team when we'll probably have some tough years ahead. Let the White Sox look bad in the eyes of the few who can't see this team for what it is.
  2. QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ Dec 6, 2011 -> 06:25 PM) Firstly, there's no room for him. Rios, De Aza, Viciedo and Lillibridge. Secondly, he's worse than all of them. WHen was the last time that he was good? What year? Third, why would you take away playing time from the young guys to play Rowand? Makes no f***ing sense at all. The only reason that I can imagine the Sox would even think about it would be the need to sell a few tickets. There really is no logical reason for him to be here. It's such a fan-boy type of signing that is only meant to invigorate the old feelings of 2005. "He's a club house leader," we'll hear. Or, "he'll be a good addition with the departure of Buehrle to manage the clubhouse." No one here knows Ventura enough as a manager to trust him; but I would rather remove the temptation all together or Rowand being on this team. I just fear a scenario where he's the go-to guy when players are struggling because of his veteran status and clubhouse leadership. I swear, I won't truly be happy until every member of the 2005 White Sox team retires. I've already anticipated hearing rumors of Buehrle returning less than two seasons from now.
  3. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 9, 2011 -> 07:29 PM) The White Sox are a complete and utter joke. So Jerry didn't get involved with this one. Hmmmm me thinks he's starting to smell the saved money. You need to wake up. If Williams is intent on rebuilding, or whatever our equivalent is that would basically concede this season, there's no need to have Buehrle around. Can we have someone leave and just accept the circumstances involving it without assigning blame for once? Buehlre wanted his money/years (his decision), perhaps wanted a team better constructed to compete (his decision), and the White Sox are going another direction (JR/KW's decision).
  4. Many Sox fans have grown up with Buehrle, have seen him pitch here for over a decade, and now they can't take the possibility he is leaving here for more money (judging from Cowley's remarks) or perhaps changing his remind on retirement. Yes, I understand Cowley has his agenda; but even if his source is correct it doesn't change my view of Buehrle. My position is, so what if he does? What more does he owe this organization or its fans? All too often fans become attached to someone and feel they should never leave. I'm honestly reluctant to open up the Aaron Rowand thread....
  5. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Dec 7, 2011 -> 08:57 AM) I find it funny that some of the people here b*tching that we didn't get 7 players for Santos are the same ones in the other thread saying we would be lucky to get a bag of balls for Danks. Most closers have a short shelf life. With Reed in the wings, I just hope the guy they got is as good as they hope. Which really is the most important factor here. If you're willing to trade Santos 1-for-1, which even if it doesn't signal a complete rebuilding implies we're restocking our system, Molina HAS to turn into a quality major leaguer. There isn't even room here for maybes. This is the purpose of having a deep minor league system, to account for the common prospect who never lives up to his potential. But when you're like the White Sox and have a limited international presence and an equally limited farm system these trades have no choice but to work out if we're looking to compete in 3-4 years. Maybe sooner.
  6. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 6, 2011 -> 01:18 PM) If Santos is dealing regardless of the Sox situation in 2012, let's say he is at 3.1 ERA and converts 18 of 20 saves by July 1st. A team in need will overpay at he deadline for bullpen help...see Capps, Matt Something doesn't smell right here as Santos was cheap and his value was only going up. Why move him in a diluted market when they did not have to. It just seems odd. I think Nestor is a piece in a bigger trade. I see how he fits what Toronto is doing but now seems odd. I'd take my chances, even in this market that isn't favorable to closers, rather than assuming his value will continue to rise next season. Or that someone will overpay midseason. Unless a player is under performing expectations, I'd almost always prefer to trade someone too early than too late. Anyways, we'll be in no different position with or without Santos. Still a heaping pile of suck for 2012.
  7. I don't even care if Buehrle leaves. It's a business and he already has his ring -- let him earn his millions elsewhere. Just get it done with so we can absorb all the Buehrle teet suckling now and then concentrate on rebuilding this team.
  8. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 6, 2011 -> 01:10 PM) The problem with a youth movement is Peavy, Dunn and Rios are going nowhere so the payroll is not dropping as much as the attendance will. I have no issue with a youth movement but what are they going to do with those 3? Lose with dignity I hope.
  9. QUOTE (spiderman @ Dec 6, 2011 -> 01:06 PM) Chicago Tribune Scouting Report This report is less than flattering - basically says the Sox over overrating this guy because the guy they got from Toronto likes him, and that he projects as a back of the rotation starter. Ok, meanwhile Santos is here saving games for a mediocre team under a team friendly contract. Sure, I would have like to receive more; but as someone else pointed out it wasn't a great market for closers. Even so, we'll have other pieces to deal soon.
  10. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 6, 2011 -> 12:57 PM) I am amazed (but not really) at the stupidity of this fan base. We have an inability to think logically about something. Instead, we overreact with the first thought that comes to our head. What's the LAST thing a rebuilding team needs? A closer. What's the first thing a rebuilding team needs? Pitching prospects. I feel sorry for KW because it is impossible to win with these fans. He guys and buys, and we b**** about not having a system. He sells and builds the system, and we b**** about moving our MLB pieces. PICK ONE! Unless there's several pages of discontent in the middle of this thread, I'd say a majority approve of it. I know I do, and you know damn well that pre-Jordan4life days I was the obnoxious poster complaining about our system and saying "Where's our (insert player -- formerly Liriano, now Gonzalez)?" We're not going anywhere next season. I don't give a f*** about Buehrle, or the casual fan, or the payroll -- none of that matters. If anything, this move proves to me that Williams has more sense about his team now than ever before. I'd like to believe this is Williams parting gift, knowing he'll be out the door next year and may as well do what he can to try and improve the team down the line. And before southsider2k5 comes in with "you don't know how long that'll take," nope -- I sure don't. But I'm relatively young and I can wait for a LONNNGGG time. I'm tired of the alternative of building on the fly.
  11. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 6, 2011 -> 12:05 PM) Man that contract for Sanots is so team friendly. I hope he doesnt turn into the dominant closer for the Jays that I thought he could be. I envisioned someone trading for him at the price of a quality reliever and then stretching him out into a starter. But regardless, I like this trade. The position with Addison Reed and Santos is EXACTLY the benefit of having a functioning minor league system. Due to Reed's emergence, we were allowed to deal Santos for a quality prospect. This is how it's done. Whether this means we're blowing up the team, I sure hope it does. Santos on this team versus not was never going to be the difference in this team contending for a playoff spot.
  12. The true reason he's retiring........the White Sox have already filled their managerial position. If he can't coach our team, may as well leave baseball.
  13. It won't matter who's coaching, the team will still be bad. There's no one scenario aside from the White Sox retaining Walker that would have led to any sort of reaction from me.
  14. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 28, 2011 -> 05:44 PM) You dip Doritos in salsa? It's common among the brothas.
  15. Jesus, I haven't seen SoxlifeinPA for years.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 21, 2011 -> 07:44 AM) Gage was way ahead of everyone in the old days. Soxtalk pre 2005 was like the dead ball era in this website's history. Reaching a high number of posts in those days wasn't easy. There wasn't nearly the amount of posters or threads as now, or the wide variety of subforums. Makes me wonder what the hell we talked about back then. But boy, did we ever argue and just berate each other constantly. Any old timers remember that one huge fight we got into back in 2003? I want to say Yahtzee Sox began a thread called "Are You Gay?" and it just spiraled out of control. IIRC Cwsox, beastly, cluer, bmr were all banned; and then everyone was b****ing back and forth and taking sides in the aftermath. I love reminiscing about this s***.
  17. Animal activists were freaking out after the mountain lion was killed in Roscoe Village several years ago. There was even a house set on fire near the Daley's vacation home in protest. I'd love to see what those goofs do after this incident. Let's see if they have the balls to travel to rural Ohio and start their bulls*** with the locals.
  18. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 07:26 PM) So that's why all of the teams in major league baseball hire guys with absolutely no experience whatsoever. It mustn't help at all.wjo Those with no experience just aren't given a chance right away. It doesn't mean they can't do it, but most have to pay their dues and "learn" (whether they actually do or not) alongside a major league manager. I also have to imagine most GM's make those hires looking out for their own asses. It's easier to pick the re-tread or the popular pick than someone new to the job. For Williams to make it, it suggests to me he's confident in his job. He's not going anywhere, atleast for the next few seasons. Honestly, there's no one they could have hired that would have made me react any differently than now. When they're situated to compete, then I'll care. For now, they're treading and if Ventura is terrible then he'll just fit alongside our terrible team. Perfect match.
  19. QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 06:50 PM) None of this is can be very good. Williams is atrocious at this own job. I'd care more if I thought this team was in a position to compete next season. Let the guy learn. If we're terrible, perhaps that will be it for Williams. I preferred Dave Martinez too, but I wasn't shocked. It was a White Sox type of move. Kind of like the same feeling I have on draft day when they do what they do.
  20. Happy birthday to Soxtalk's Polish Hammer
  21. How often does this happen in modern baseball, for someone with no prior experience in ANY form of coaching to be given a major league managers job? It's not even an issue of mine that he'll be over his head (I personally believe it's always more a "you have to earn your dues" type of job), but what it suggests with Williams. I just see this as a manager who will be constantly under the direction of the GM. In some ways, I can cheer the oversight-- Guillen was reluctant to sit veterans and give rookies extended playing time. If Ventura does this s*** Willaims can give him a kick in the ass. But, the game is about respect, too -- and I wonder how the players will react to him. Overall, I don't have a problem with the hiring. The team will likely have a few mediocre seasons as it is, and if they're attempting to rebuild then it won't matter who is managing the team.
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 08:59 PM) He'll be back. Sure, as some part of our organization one day, but that whole display doesn't appear to be anything less than a goodbye gesture. Cooper knows better than anyone, and I'd say he knows Buehrle is gawn.
  23. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 22, 2011 -> 08:15 PM) Like I've said, it's a slap in the face of the fans. "Players look forward to the bonus as a nice Christmas present" -- Hawk yesterday
  24. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 22, 2011 -> 07:26 PM) I think I've agreed with SS2K5 and Balta more in the last month (mainly since Victory registered) than I have in the last two years combined. I don't like this at all. I would join filibuster (that would make things normal again). But that could get ugly - aka the Gordon Beckham gay thread. I've rarely had the motivation to even browse Soxtalk these last few months, but I've taken notice of Balta's shift in demeanor. He's much more critical of this team. Not that any of it isn't justified, but coming from him I'm not used to it. For anyone not around that often it's even more noticeable.
  25. HAHA, no fan touched that ball. One whiffed and the ball hit the guard rail on a bounce.
