  1. It'll be interesting to see if anyone within the media picks up this story and runs with it. It seems like a Joe Cowley exclusive waiting to happen.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 09:37 PM) I wonder if the Sox would have this supposed change of heart if it were any other team but the Twins rumored to be close to signing him. That's 18 games a year and the only team you can look at right now in the division and say they could be better than the Sox. If Thome helped them win and Jones and Kotsay don't play all that well, it would be something not quite as bad as the White Flag Trade, but pretty close, especially if we are talking a contract for peanuts. Williams deserves all of the criticism if that scenario were to occur. It's not as if no one could have foreseen Kotsay/Jones struggling, or Thome adequately performing the role of a DH for $2million. It'll be all the more hilarious if we're in contention or close come June and Williams overpays in prospects for a DH with similar numbers to Thome. Hell, even if Kotsay/Jones are struggling and Thome is doing poorly or is injured, it still wouldn't absolve Williams from any blame. Those two are never the right answers to the question of who should be the DH. In my mind, the only way Williams gets off with this DH situation is if Jones/Kotsay equal or exceed Thome's production. It'd only make sense if they're not pursuing him, or someone else, that they believe what they have is superior. And that's exactly how I'll look at it. The entire season. Every AB.
  3. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 10:44 AM) Thats the closest Lance Broadway has ever been to throwing a strike Love the comments section: I prefer to say that he's being sued for assault because one of his pitches was hit so violently into the stands for a HR.
  4. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 01:33 PM) Take a look at the last line of my post im all for bringing in thome. I think the only way we see a DH brought in is if its a few weeks into spring training and Jones looks like hes looked the last few years. I see no reason why Jones can hit 30+ HR and hover around .250 I agree, especially since he hasn't done either of those things in FOUR YEARS!! Are we really going to decide the fate of the position based upon a few weeks of ABs against spring training scrubs? That's just baseball retarded, to put it mildly. Why not just sign Thome, have him DH, and if Jones miraculously turns himself around then we have a great problem to deal with. Waiting to see what happens with Jones/Kotsay in spring training is disastrous because, by the time we rightfully correct the mistake, no one will be available. Then everyone can complain when Williams signs whatever crap is remaining or overpays with prospects for a DH.
  5. Here are two threads where several wise men spoke out http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=74759 http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...p;#entry2017190
  6. I know there were many on here wanting to shut down Buehrle after several starts late in the season where he wasn't throwing more than 83mph. Even as a soft tosser, it was obvious something was wrong.
  7. QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 17, 2010 -> 10:07 PM) How the hell does Avatar win best picture? I remember reading a link posted off of some website, maybe it was Drudge, that discussed how important Avatar's success is to the future of movie making. It was posted in the days following all the negative reviews of the trailer. The link suggested that if the movie didn't succeed, it would be a tremendous blow for about every future blockbuster movie. There would be a, "We don't want an 'Avatar'" type of sentiment. This would limit the creation of innovative movies that aren't associated with some franchise. A lot was riding on it. Of course, this is all stipulation, but I could definitely see the hidden agenda here of pushing forward Avatar.
  8. QUOTE (SHIPPS @ Jan 17, 2010 -> 07:55 AM) Top Notch burger on 95th off of Western is the best burger you will ever eat by far. I don't know if this place is still there. They've revamped that area quite a bit. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...&iwloc=addr (click little street level icon) And the construction has long since been completed.
  9. QUOTE (The Gooch @ Jan 16, 2010 -> 11:09 PM) I live in Orland Park and with the recent opening of all the new burger places in the area, I was wondering what everyone's favorite burger joint is? Don't include real nice restaurants or bars where you have had a really good burger, just burger joints. Within the past few years we have had a Red Robin, a Fatburger, and a 5 Guys open up here. Of the the three my favorite is Fatburger slightly edging out 5 Guys. Five Guys has much better fries, but I love the fried egg on the Fatburger (along with the texture and fresh topping, and they have great shakes. I will not that I have not had the opportunity to try In'N'Out Burgers as I hear from many people that they are great. So what do ya'll think? Last week I was amazed at how different the area between Kohls on LaGrange and Target has changed. I live so close to Orland, yet I've haven't been around recently since I always go to Chicago Ridge Mall if I need anything. I'll have to try out these burger joints. Personally, I like Burger King's hamburgers. Rosie's off 103rd and Cicero has good burgers, as well. Really, everything there is great.
  10. I wouldn't mind signing him to a minor league deal, but please, let's not talk about Coop fixing him. If anything, it should be that the AAA coaching staff has to 'fix' him, then after displaying an extended period of dominance, we have nice problem of deciding what to do. There's just no time to have Coop deal with that dufus.
  11. QUOTE (since56 @ Jan 17, 2010 -> 08:14 AM) Why are we so locked into the stereotype of a DH being a power hitter. There wwere times last rear I would have had Pods at at Dh because we needed him at lead off but his defense was so bad I wouldn't want him out there. If you have a guy that can not play the field but can still hit what you have is a pinch hitter. Ozzie wants the Dh spot to be able to hit in match ups run the bases and go into the field if necessary. The DH does not have to be a home run or nothing guy. He will use his bench to fill that spot. That also gives him room on the roster for another picher. Why cant our DH be someone who is actually decent and capable of replacement level production out of the position? That's what everyone is complaining about.
  12. QUOTE (SnB @ Jan 16, 2010 -> 03:12 PM) i hope the new nba jam still has the horrible logo/player graphics for the team select screen. I hope they still have the feature in the new game where, no matter how bad you were kicking the computer's ass, they'd manage to fight their way back. Including the full court three pointer to win the game. It's frustrating moments like this that were so common in old SNES/NES games
  13. See, from my perspective (that is, one of absolutely no economic background), I'd just lie. Why not just say the economy is improving? If they could only get the Department of Labor, or whoever monitors unemployment, to go along, we could get those money hoarders who make good money, yet just hold onto it because they hear the word recession, to spend it. I just don't understand how things can improve. I read these newspaper articles of factory workers losing their jobs, knowing they'll never find another one, and I wonder -- what the hell can anyone possibly do? Industrial, blue collared work is almost a thing of the past. That's leaving a whole generation of people 30-50, who only needed a high school education to do their jobs, with their pants down and a full family to support. What needs to happen is the creation of jobs that are simplistic, yet well paying. Being overly efficient is what's killing the American workforce. I've always been one of these people that jokes about city workers, and how it takes five of them to do the work of one; but this is EXACTLY what needs to happen. Hire more people to do the work of a few. I'm not even joking. The problem is we're looking for complex solutions to a problem that has an easy answer. Also, my idea to save the automotive industry is to give people the option of buying cars that are no longer made. You'll receive a catalog, and if you want a 1971 GTO Judge you can pay $50,000 (it has to be reasonable) to have it made. American companies are struggling as it is, so I couldn't see how this hurts anyone. There would be a huge demand for vintage cars, perhaps in addition to more recent ones that have been discontinued. It would put many Americans to work, and you'd only produce what you have been ordered to make. Thus, there aren't 20,000 cars sitting in a lot that no one is buying. Every car ordered would be hand assembled, not by machines. There's one piece of the equation solved It's like this crisis in Haiti. All in all, we'll probably give billions to the country to rebuild. Someone can fill me in if I'm off, but who exactly is receiving this money? I'd say instead of giving Haitians these billions, that will never get to the people, use it to hire American citizens to go over there and begin rebuilding the cities and creating infrastructure. Yes, it may be seen as exploitative that some are making money off of this, but I guarantee we'd do a hell of a lot better job than anything the international community can muster. And you know many would line up for the opportunity if it paid decently, like $40,000/yr.
  14. QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 04:27 PM) I've seen it as well. I don't think they'll ever learn that video games can't adapt into movies. Personally, I loved the Silent Hill adaption. Both as someone who enjoys the video game series and horror movies in general. Although this example is far from the norm.
  15. QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 12:33 PM) I really hope Peavy pitches opening day. He's our ace. He deserves that honor. Personally, I don't care (and I doubt many within the team do), but I believe it'll be Buehrle every opening day until he's gone, injured, or ineffective as a starter.
  16. QUOTE (SnB @ Jan 11, 2010 -> 04:39 PM) Elaine dancing gets me everytime. I love the sequence later on in that episode, when Brody comes to Seinfeld's apartment to collect his bootleg tape that Elaine recorded herself dancing on: Brody: How'd it turn out? Jerry: Uh... great. Kramer: Although the whole story kinda comes apart at the end there. Jerry: Yeah, out of nowhere there's this lone dancer who appears to be injured. Kramer: Yeah, it's a disturbing image. Jerry: Yeah, so you cry... and when you see the dancer, you cry again. Other quotes: Jerry: Kramer, these balloons aren't going to stay filled 'til New Year's. Kramer: Those aren't for New Year's. Those are my everyday balloons. Newman: (driving down the street with a piece of garbage creating sparks under his mail truck "Once........twice.......three times a (car bust in flames) AHHHHHHH, AHHHHH, OH THE HUMANITY!" Summer George: Seinfeld's van! Seinfeld's van! George's cousin: What is he saying? George: I think he's saying Son of Sam! George: (burst out of car) I knew it wasn't Berkowitz!
  17. The person in the truck approaching from the bottom of the screen was probably just thinking to them self, "Why the hell is this car not tur....OH MY GOD DID THAT BUILDING JUST COLLAPSE?!"
  18. QUOTE (qwerty @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 10:56 PM) I never got around to telling you bob dylan, and you will likely never read this, but after watching synecdoche, new york three times now, it is still as difficult to break down as it was the first time, probably more so actually. Hurts my head. Is he in the Army right now?
  19. I want to be the first to preemptively blame any struggles Gavin has at any point from this point forward on his marriage. All sexist comments suggesting she is nagging him will be used.
  20. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 03:51 PM) I feel like we need to fire up the 2009 Soxtalk awards soon. Do you know it has been about five years since anyone has been inducted into the Soxtalk Hall of Fame? Time to change that, broham.
  21. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 11:00 AM) Once you left your house you couldn't contact your friends about where you were or how you would meet them at a certain place because there were no cell phones? This is what immediately came to my mind as well. It's strange to think I'm not even that old and I can speak of a time as recent as eight years ago that any teenager today probably couldn't imagine living in. Additional items: Arcades, and always anticipating new ones Dollar cinemas (none around where I live, anymore) and drive ins. Copying videos by hooking up two VCRs to each other AOL Mom and pop video stores (most notably those within a neighborhood where the owner lived above the store
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 21, 2009 -> 07:34 PM) I was pretty clear on the economy reality of the situation that the Sox were preparing for. In fact, I have been borne out pretty correct in most of my predictions about how much teams that weren't as prudent would get into trouble, and you only have to look at our division to see that playing out now. The Sox were very smart and ahead of the bell-curve in being ready for the problems. So much so that they have been able to take advantage of the situation of other teams to get guys like Peavy and Rios. Also after that same argument a million times you do realize that in the world of absolutes a few different things could have happened with the Sox. The first and most obvious is that the Sox prepared for a worst case scenario that did not happen. Like always the Sox invest their extra cash back into the team. The other is that revenue ended up being higher than anticipated. Another is that at the request of Kenny Williams, Jerry went back to the board and got extra cash from the investors that hadn't been there before. Another is that they moved funds over from other areas to pay for payroll raises. None of those scenarios means the Sox were cheap, like you said a million times. Explain what other areas they could have possibly relocated money from to pay for mid season acquisitions.
  23. QUOTE (Brian @ Dec 20, 2009 -> 01:05 PM) Brittany Murphy died this morning at the age of 32. Heart attack. Yikes Hmm. Right after this post I checked all the major news websites and no one has reported it yet (aside from TMZ). I guess there's something to say about Fox and CNN not posting information detailing a celebrity's death until it has been independently confirmed. I'm surprised -- I would have expected everyone to jump right on the news after TMZ posted it. If it's true, I'm placing all my money on a heroin overdose.
  24. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Dec 20, 2009 -> 12:48 PM) Supposed to see Avatar in Imax today, but I really would rather just lay around all day and do nothing. I've been waiting for someone on Soxtalk to post their review of Avatar. I probably don't know of one person that has seen it. Although I love IMDB and new releases -- it's secretive voting system has Avatar as the 25th greatest movie of all-time.
  25. Whenever I eat I make sure everything on my plate is separated. For example, random pieces of corn must be removed from the potatoes before beginning. Also, each type of food must be completed before moving on to something else.
