ELOY HURT! (3/25 Update: Torn Pectoral Tendon, Out 5-6 months))
ChiSox59 replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Ehhhh, who knows. Sox said right away no updates until tomorrow. Lynn did say that Eloy was in good spirits and seemed to insinuate he’s ok. I think it could go either way. I watched the highlight many times and it does look like his shoulder popped out as he wrapped his arm around the fence as he came down. But it’s hard to tell. Eloy also seems a bit soft so I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s a couple day thing and he’s fine. Also wouldn’t be shocked if it’s a longer term injury. But hoping for good news and Eloy is needed. -
Then what? Play Engel in LF? And Vaughn to the bench? Eloy in LF doesn’t work with the way this roster is constructed. The Sox don’t even need him to be anything better than a bad LF. They need him to not hurt himself.

Yeah...but like....with Abreu and Vaughn...he can’t DH. So he’s the LF until Abreu is no longer here. Which is why extending Jose never made much sense as anyone with a mind saw this problem coming, but obviously year 1 of that deal sure went well fo him. Truthfully not sure what else they can unless they want to trade Vaughn which also makes no sense. edit: missing a word -

Is this based on anything or just your feeling? Hope you’re right tho! edit: never mind - I hadn’t seen your response. -
His trade value has already cratered. He has 1 option left (this year). You're not getting anything via trade for him - you just hope something clicks over the next year.
-
Needs? This narrative is so dumb. Why would the Sox trade collins for a dime on the dollar just to be nice? Having a catcher with upside around is a huge plus. Giving him away for nothing makes no sense.
-
Hopefully not a sign that Robert is more serious.
-
According to fangraphs, he does. Though I felt like he has out when the Sox claimed him.
-
Engel should be the late inning defense replacement, not Leury.
-
I like Leury, but he plays anywhere close to 100 games, things went very, very wrong.
-
I see no reason to bring in Yoenis. I'd be fine if it was a minor league deal, but if they have a few extra mill to spend, they should have brought in another SP instead.

BUT BUT BUT SERVICE TIME MANIPULATION BAD! NEED BEST TEAM ON FIELD DAY 1 OR THIS ALL IS SHAM! BLAH BLAH BLAH. Kopech being on the OD roster and in the pen is quite literally the dumbest thing the Sox could do - almost as dumb as calling him up in August 2.5 years ago for no reason. Katz talking to Stoney and Jason the other day on the telecast about Kopech pitching out the pen just got my blood boiling. It makes zero f'ing sense. We need this dude making starts down the stretch of the season. He has very limited innings this year. He could be our 2nd best SP. Jacking him around in the pen is a joke. -

Are we referring to Kopech? Still not a good reason. Dude is at the absolute maximum throwing 100 innings this year. I personally would like to have the option of him making starts for the Sox in August/September/October. Therefore....send him to alternate site when ST ends. Kid glove him in on short starts in AAA once that season starts until he works up to 4-5 innings, and bring him to the MLB rotation in late June / early July. Then we get unimpeded Kopech in the rotation for the 2nd half of the season, and we get a year of control back, and we're not jerking around our highest upside SP by throwing him in the MLB pen. -

You can literally run this analysis for every single FA ever signed. FAs sign with the highest bidder 99% of the time. So in that case, every other team balked at the ask, and then every player signed via FA is then overpaid per this line of thinking. Grandal was exactly the guy he's always been last season. That is, one of the very best and most valuable catchers in the game. You can project regression all you want to fit your narrative, but no stats point towards Grandal regressing at this stage. Most say 1 WAR is worth $7-10M on the open market. Per that, Grandal is vastly underpaid. I agree that $18.25M is a hefty sum, but if he's "overpaid" its only by a couple million a year, and that is what it requires to sign FAs. Grandal is really good. He also brings a lot of things to this lineup that are lacking, and would be severely lacking without him. He is quite literally the perfect complementary piece for this roster, and the fact that he is a catcher makes it all the better. But its obvious you have some stupid vendetta against him, so I will just leave it at that. I sure as shit an going to enjoy watching him play over whatever other garbage would be manning catcher if we didn't have him. -

I mean, I like Carlos. But he's an unmitigated bust for the Sox at this point. He could still end up being a serviceable MLB pitcher down the line, but I don't think he's ever going to live up to his pre-draft status at this point.
-
Well, if Vaughn's agency can't see the valuation difference between a 5 tool gold glove caliber CF and and undersized 1B/DH, then that conversation should end right there. I personally am not really in a hurry to extend Vaughn. We can have him for 6.91 seasons.
-
I literally couldn't be less concerned about a grievance. Its a complete non-issue with Vaughn, Kopech and even Crochet, tho I fully expect Crochet on the MLB roster. While I agree a similar statement like that will probably be made if the Sox elect to go that route, I don't think it matters. AV has no grounds for a grievance. That all being said, seems likely that AV will be the OD DH and Kopech and Crochet will be in the pen. Not how I would draw it up myself, but I am all about winning the f'ing division, so lets play ball! I think the equation is simple one, but I also understand wanting to have your best roster on the field day 1.
-
Where am I adding two weeks? If Vaughn spends a grand total of 15 days not on mlb roster (so likely even less than 15 games), the Sox get an additional year of control. It would be silly not to do it. The rules are the rules - the Sox didn't make them. AV has 250 minor league at bats and didn't play last year. He has absolutely no grounds for a grievance. Nor does Kopech. Straight from MLB: "Each Major League regular season consists of 187 days (typically 183 days prior to 2018), and each day spent on the active roster or injured list earns a player one day of service time. A player is deemed to have reached "one year" of Major League service upon accruing 172 days in a given year."

Grandal is literally the perfect fit for this roster. This team is full of free-swinging right handed hitters that are allergic to walking. Grandal adds line-up balance, is easily our best OBP guy (Vaughn may ultimately pass him), has elite plate discipline and is one of the best 2-3 catchers in the game. He accumulated 25.1 fWAR from 2015-2019 (avg. just over 5 fWAR per season), and his 162 game average for 2020 was 5.98 fWAR. Yasmani Grandal is really, really good and is FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR from a bad signing. The hate he gets from some on this board is just absolutely mind boggling. -

In what world was Grandal not a good signing? Can't wait to listen to this one. -
Except its not mid-may. Its like April 20th. We're talking about 15 games. The AAA season getting delayed doesn't make it any easier, though. Ultimately, if Vaughn is on the OD roster, I am not going to be up in arms. I just think its shortsighted.
