Mhmmmm. Not that they're flush with option, but this way signing a butcher in RF just because he has a good to decent bat is not a good plan. Did Goins badly misplay one?
-
Badly misplay one?
-
Fair enough. Skepticism is warranted.

Lol, wat? Your "...but Hahn said otherwise" comment pretty clearly states you felt he should have said something else. I am welcome to stick up for the guy if I want. Hahn's record on the field is putrid as a GM, but he is the guy that has built what appears to be one of the best young cores in baseball. I am willing to be patient and allow the man a little more time to put finishing touches on the roster. It was pretty obvious to me that 2019 was a year too early. This season didn't change anything for me, other than being 1 year closer to primetime. If this offseason goes awry, I will lose said patience.
-
Of course he did. He's never going to say "yah, we signed Jon Jay just so Manny had another buddy in the clubhouse". To expect him to essentially shit on someone he just signed is silly.

I honestly think the Sox believe they have a better chance to retain Yermin in the organization by not adding him to the 40 man. No one is going to take a 27 year old 270 pound DH in the Rule 5 draft. And if they do, there is a decent chance the Sox get him back anyway. 40 man spots are valuable, and while there is a colossal fuckton of garbage on the 40 man currently, a lot needs to be added this offseason, and I expect several major league signings. The Sox are also very likely to add a catcher on a major league deal to backup McCann (hopefully Grandal to create the 3-headed monster), so Collins can DH and play 1B regularly. They aren't going to carry 5 catchers on the 40 man, even though I use catcher loosely with Yermin. All that said, I definitely would have called him up. He earned it.

PASS. The Sox really need a RF that isn't awful defensively. Ideally, he also hits left handed. If he doesn't hit left handed, Sox are going to need to find a lefty masher at 1B or DH, and frankly, there aren't any on the FA market.

Gotta feel for Palka. Just so overmatched. Too bad Yermin can’t play RF. Stick Mendick out there tomorrow. -
LOL Sometimes you're just not worth even responding to.

Dude, relax. Plenty of teams have been very good and won championships with 1 below average corner OF.
-
Because he's 22, can improve, and he provides much more value as a LF than a DH. You can always make him a DH or 1B later in his career if needed. He needs to play LF most of the time for a few seasons. The Sox have struggled to find a good DH (I know, I know...) but its much easier to find a good stick at DH (where they are relatively cheap) than in the OF.

Yolmer has been pretty good lately. So good that he just may have saved his Sox career. I don't particularly want Yolmer around next season, but he's on pace for 1.5 fWAR. I kinda of doubt he gets non-tendered. Hopefully they can get him to agree to just a slight raise on his 2019 salary, because I feel like that money can be better allocated.

Here is an article anyone who thinks Puig would be a good fit should definitely read. Many (most?) of his teammates and coaches on the Dodgers didn't speak that highly of him upon his exit. https://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/la-sp-yasiel-puig-dodgers-legacy-reds-20190414-story.html

The Sox without a doubt have what it takes to get just about anything done. They just won't part with what it would require. These are two different things.
-
Eloy looked pretty decent in the OF in between his injuries. I think he has the ability to be an average defender if he works at it and doesn't put on too much weight. But yah, he's never going to be good out there.
-
I think the Sox have plenty of bullets to pull of a trade, even without using any of the premium prospects. I really just don't think any of those guys are great fits. They're all bad defensively, and they all hit right handed. For instance, if the Sox sign Ozuna and re-sign Abreu as their offensive additions, when Robert and Madrigal arrive in mid April, the Sox will be sporting a lineup with 7 right handed hitters and 2 lefties (one of which is Collins at DH). I just don't really see that happening as it creates very poor lineup balance.
-
Who do you suggest then? There aren't exactly a crop of sexy options on the FA market.
-
Same. Really don't like the fit at all unless its a short term deal and Sox somehow find a lefty masher elsewhere.
-
At least with Mazara you may catch lightning in a bottle. Its unlikely, but if the acquisition price isn't too high, its not a bad gamble to take.
-
Polonco and Mazara would certainly be cheaper than the other options.
-
David Dahl could be an interesting target. Hard to gauge how much he'd cost as he's been hurt alot but the Rockies are very lefty heavy and maybe would be interested in moving him.
-
Gramps? Lol, I am in my 20s.

Can you discuss the Cubs on a Cubs board with fellow Cubs fans? Great, thanks!

Leury isn't going away. He will still be around. Look, I am not necessarily campaigning for Gordon. But I'd prefer him in RF to Cordell/Engel/Tilson/Palka by quite a bit. Leury doing what he actually should be doing as a utility player filling in at SS, 2B, the OF positions is more valuable than just sticking him in RF all season. I'd far prefer an upside trade like Nimmo, Tapia, Mazara, Polonco, etc., but that isn't necessarily going to be an easy task.
