Sox @ Astros 5/22 Gamethread
At least Gio has turned it around in a big way. If we were getting more 2018 Lucas things would be very grim.

Time for some changes, Rick
There is a zero percent chance Alonso is on the roster next season.

Yah, the Sox aren't signed Rendon. They aren't moving Moncada off 3B. Its not happening. Get your hopes up on Cole if you want. There may be a shot there.

Cole would be a good start. Grandal would be nice. Several mid to back rotation guys that would fit on short term deals. Marcell Ozuna or Nick Castellanos in to shore up RF with Eloy and Robert. They could easily spent the $300M they would have had to give Machado next offseason. 95% chance they don't, but they could. And they'd probably be better off than they would have been with MM, even though I obviously really wanted him.

Plenty of guys left to spend money on. Now the Sox actually doing it is another story.

Lol.

I think you'd be disappointed in what the current offer for Colome would be.

Time for some changes, Rick
The team that would pick him up in this scenerio would be the team on the hook for the vesting option. And its actually only 526 PA based on how many he got in 2018. It would very clearly be Rondon that would go before Yolmer.

Look, I am not some big Castillo fan but he serves a purpose on the roster. Even with Collins up. Do you really call Collins up to be the back up catcher? If you're calling him up to be the DH against RHP, you're going to need a third catcher. McCann, Collins and Castillo can coexist just fine on the 25 man. The odd men out would be Alonso (please) and likely Palka too, unless you want to have an OF with Eloy and Palka in it. As I said earlier this thread, McCann and Collins cover DH and C against RHP. Castillos backs up. McCann and Castillo cover DH and C against LHP. Collins backs up. It makes a lot of sense, but it obviously does not work with Alonso on the roster.

You struggle with reading comprehension.

Time for some changes, Rick
They are literally opposite platoon mates. Castillo should not play against RHP. Collins should not play again LHP. They can coexist on the roster just fine. Obviously Castillo is not a future piece. But he's also not a complete bum, and he will most certainly spend several more years in the big leagues. The Sox don't need to cut him him.

Dear Ricky
I think its a simple as Ricky is unable to fill out a lineups card that doesn't go righty/lefty/right/lefty. He is truly a pitiful manager.

I am with with most of this plan (I'd ultimately be OK with Happ for Colome, but would want more), but really don't see the need to trade Leury. He's not going to return much, but he's super useful. He's the perfect utility guy. I'd keep him around unless someone wants to overpay. I also don't think Castillo is getting released anytime soon. He is a legitimate MLBer. He's had a rough go with the Sox, but he's mashed LHP in his career, and I have no problem keep him on the roster. In fact, Castillo, McCann and Collins form a pretty decent 3-headed C/DH rotation in which McCann catches RHP and Collins DHs. Castillo and McCann split DH / C duties against LHP. Collins gets an occasional start at C against RHP.

ALONSO 2019 DUNN 2011 OFFICIAL COMPARISON THREAD OF DOOM
At least Dunn could take a walk! Give me 2011 Adam Dunn over 2019 Alonso all day errrrday.

Palka time
I just don't see how anyone can argue giving Alonso the DH at bats over Palka. If you want to argue Collins over Palka, that makes some sense I guess. But there is literally zero reason for the Sox to continue to run Alonso out there everyday. There isn't a chance in hell they're recouping anything worth a damn in a trade for him. Just cut him, let someone else sign him for the MLB min, and take your ~$400k or whatever in savings, and put someone who has at least a 1% chance of being a future piece in his place. I know they'll eventually do it, but just do it now.

Rainy Day Poll: Evaluate the Big 3 Trades
Moncada and Kopech are most critical. Eloy and Cease for Q was easily the best return.

How many wins do you expect out of this road trip?
Yah, I'm aware. I live in Minneapolis and watch the Twins whenever the Sox aren't playing. He didn't become the second coming of Johan Santana over the offseason, new cutter be damned. I'd be surprised if he had an ERA below 4 by seasons end.
-
Palka time
Palka was 110 OPS+ hitter in 450 MLB plate apperances last season. I, for one, don't think his days in the show are over based on a horrific 35 plate appearance sample. Do I think he's part of the future? Not really. But he definitely has a good enough stick to play in bigs, and if the Sox were to DFA him, he'd likely be back in the show very quickly.
-
Palka time
Is it really unlucky though when he hits 90% of his hard hit balls directly into the shift? He's one of the easiest guys to defend because he hits the ball in the same spot nearly every time. This isn't going to change.

Also likely true.
