  1. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 21, 2016 -> 03:01 PM) Well if it were like the Sony deal, each studio finances their films (so Sony would finance the Spider-Man films, Fox the X-Men, FF and Deadpool, Marvel the rest) and retains all profits. I didn't know the specifics of the deal, I just looked it up. 'Marvel Studios won’t pay Sony Pictures for the rights to put Spider-Man in “Captain America: Civil War,” the “Avengers” franchise or its other superhero films, as part of its new partnership with the studio, according to sources with knowledge of the deal. At the same time, Marvel won’t receive a cut of the box office for any of Sony’s films that feature Spider-Man. Sony won’t receive a percentage of the revenue Disney makes from Marvel’s films that have Spider-Man, either.' I was going to say that if the studio are going to put in equal money, you could have another Interstellar situation. On that film, WB and Paramount went into together and each came up with $40M profit, while Chris Nolan walked away with more money than the studios did ($120M to be exact). This Spider Man deal seems to be in the best interest of both studios.
  2. QUOTE (Vance Law @ Oct 21, 2016 -> 02:49 PM) The L.A. Clippers were a joke for their entire existence until a few years ago. Fans will pay attention to a winning team, including ceasing to pay attention to one of the all-time great franchises (Lakers). People stopped paying attention to the Lakers not because of the rise of the Clippers but because the Lakers were/are turrible.
  3. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 21, 2016 -> 02:24 PM) But three studios partnering for a franchise that's heavily interwoven? Yup. And the only reason they didn't snuff them out is because they're the f***ing X-Men. You don't get rid of that cash cow entirely. I don't know about three studios but I know that Legendary (which is now apart of Universal) and Warner Bros are teaming up to make a Kajiu universe, with Godzilla and Kong. And when I think about it, three studios may not want to partner on a movie because of the diluted returns.
  4. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 21, 2016 -> 02:18 PM) They did suffocate the X men, and only recently have they started the ResurreXion storyline, which is why many believe that they are trying to make this MCU happen. Another hint is that they took Inhumans off their schedule and basically put a "TBD" label on it. Inhumans isn't off the table it just doesn't have a release date because of Spider-Man and Disney gave another film its spot. I think that news and traction on Inhumans will pick back up the closer we get to Infinity Wars and certainly Guardians of the Galaxy 2. I personally think that they're waiting to see what the finished storyline for Avengers 3 and 4 are going to be before they dive back into Inhumans. I haven't been keeping up with Marvel's comics for a while, so I will check out this storyline. It's the first XMen book in how long?
  5. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Oct 21, 2016 -> 02:54 AM) Hell, partnering with them Sony style even. Which - three major studios partnering on a film series would be crazy. Major studios partnering up isn't rare, it happens pretty regularly. I think Fox should partner with Marvel/Disney and reboot the X Men (and Fantastic Four) films in the MCU with its younger cast from Apocalypse but that would probably take a lot of time to realize because you have to figure out where mutants fit in the overall MCU and how it affects the Inhumans storyline, which I think will be the next phase of films. I'm pretty surprised that Marvel/Disney hasn't suffocated X-Men like they did Fantastic Four, in regards to how they stopped making merchandise and printing comics. Marvel/Disney even went so far to remove FF characters from new editions all previously printed pictures of the Marvel Universe. And I'm not sure why Fox wants to hold on to their Marvel properties for, because they only make money from the BO, everything else goes to Marvel/Disney.
  6. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 21, 2016 -> 01:11 PM) Let me speak for the rest of the Films thread when I say that we're pretty shocked you'd go against the grain on something. I like Deadpool but after repeat viewings its not as good as I thought it was after I first saw it. Still a good movie. *No one else gets migraines from Suicide Squad's terrible use of soundtrack?
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 21, 2016 -> 09:57 AM) There's been a dearth of decent movies the last two months. Sully, Magnificent Seven, Deepwater Horizon and this weekend's Jack Reacher are some of the few I can even recall. Deadpool is simply much more entertaining. I don't think many will care to watch SS again...unless they are fanboys and girls of Margot Robbie. I watched Deadpool again recently and wasn't entertained but I appreciate the fact that I don't get a splitting migraine when I watch it
  8. QUOTE (MEANS @ Oct 19, 2016 -> 08:01 AM) I went into the third episode knowing about the theory that William is Ed Harris's character from 30 years earlier but I'm not sure if that works for me. I enjoyed the 3rd episode more than the 2nd, but it's still all a bit confusing to really get into. There are definitely a lot of layers at play, things to follow and references to understand.
  9. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 08:52 PM) (pretty obvious that Hahn, despite his impressive degrees, knows very little about analytics; or at least he doesn't use it). What are you talking about?
  10. https://minorleaguemadhouse.com/2016/10/03/...season-edition/ Here is a mock done by a fiend and a collaborator at the subreddit. He has the Sox drafting Jordon Adell, who happens to be my favorite player in this draft class. Here is what Fangraphs had to say about him: Jordon Adell, OF, Ballard HS (KY) Height: 6’3, Weight: 200, Commitment: Louisville Jordon (or “Jo”) Adell has the best hit/power combination among high schoolers in the 2017 class and has a non-zero chance of playing center field. If that sounds like a player worthy of consideration in the draft’s top 5-10 picks, that’s because it is. But Adell is not predestined for center field. Though he has posted 70-grade run times in the 60-yard dash (6.47), I didn’t get an in-game run time to first base better than 4.4 (40 on the scale) from him all summer. Why the discrepancy? Well, the quality of Adell’s contact this summer was so good that it often didn’t necessitate a full-effort sprint to first base, and it’s possible I just never saw a good time to first. It’s also possible that, because of how hard Adell rotates toward the third-base line through contact, he just doesn’t get good jumps down the line toward first and his times are artificially slow. Scouts with whom I’ve spoken fall into two camps regarding Adell’s future position. Some think there’s a slight chance he somehow manages to be passable in center while acknowledging that it’s unlikely for him to stay there, while others think he surely ends up in a corner. I can’t find anyone confident he remains, long term, in center field and instead the industry (myself included) think Adell and his plus-plus arm end up in right field. It matters not. Adell’s bat profiles comfortably in a corner, too. He has 7 bat speed, can move the barrel around the zone and absolutely punishes everything on the inner half. While I think Adell’s approach can get pull-happy, he has the physical skills to be a future plus hitter. Adell peppered Waveland Ave with baseballs during the Under Armour home-run derby in Chicago then won the Area Code derby and homered in a game there as well. He has plus raw power and arguably projects for more than that. High-school prospects with that kind of offensive profile often go in the top 10, regardless of where they profile on the defensive spectrum. I think Adell comes off the board very early next June and I don’t expect his commitment to Louisville to be a significant obstacle.
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 09:50 AM) Surely the White Sox should have learned something from the Ventura debacle...in terms of hiring someone with absolutely zero professional experience as a coach/manager. Likely the Tigers wouldn't have hired Ausmus with a do-over, and Mike Matheny's not exactly on firm ground in St. Louis, either. The bigger question is why do winning MLB organizations or Top Ten minor league organizations always hire someone with vast/extensive experience for the Dir. of Player Development positions with their organizations if it doesn't matter? Kaper does have previous managerial experience, both in the minors and WBC. A lot of top teams in baseball have hired young people to run departments in their baseball ops. Like the Rangers with Daniels and Preller, Oakland and the Dodgers with guys like Zaidi, Kapler and Forst, and the Astros with guys like Goldstein and Elias to name a few. Experience is not a guarantee of success.
  12. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 09:46 AM) Gabe Kapler retired in 2012. he coached one year in the WBC for Team Israel. 1 year later he became the Director of Player Development for the Dodgers without any experience. He's super into analytics and nutrition and converted all of the prospect meals into gluten free stuff. Maybe Chris Getz is similar to Kapler where he has an actual "player development plan" that delves into nutrition, analytics and other factors. We have no idea. But assuming it's a s***ty hire because it's the White Sox is incredibly short-sighted and it's honestly b****ing just to b****. Thank you!
  13. I am very opposed to the idea of an international draft, I think the current system they have now is good but it needs to be regulated better.
  14. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 08:53 AM) Forgot a Nolan was in charge, all of the criticisms I've had make sense. Westworld Pitch Meeting Nolan: "And they are in a beautiful western set theme park where the priviledged kill and rape the robots, who are slaves to their storylines. But what if the robots gain consciousness? What if we wake up with them, what world will it be?" HBO Exec: "That's fantastic this is green lit, this is going to be so much fun!" Nolan: "Yeah! It's going to be just like reading a board game manual!" HBO Exec: " Wait, what?" One of my biggest complaints and likes about the show is the lack of exposition regarding the park and it's rules. So far the only straight exposition we've gotten has come from Logan when he tells William the how to of the park. The Man In Black has provided some but it's very cryptic. Kinda reminds me of the XFiles

  16. Regarding WestWorld and the pyramid. I think the top of the pyramid is the willingness to survive or someone's survival instinct. I think Delores has to be completely sentient and conscious, because she couldn't fire the gun with Teddy because as the tech said, only host with the appropriate narrative have the privilege to fire a gun/use a weapon. So when Delores is about to get raped, not only does she find the gun she is able to fire it. Her willingness to survive overrided her programming and that is very human. I'm fully on board with the theory that William is the Man In Black, 30yrs earlier. When we first see William, the camera fades in from black and he's waking up on the train, probably from the train. That's textbook on how to begin a flashback. The Man In Black did say that he's been coming to the park for 30yrs and we know that there was an accident, the death of Ford's partner (I believe). So I think we're seeing William the White Hat transform to the Man In Black. Jonathan Nolan did write the story that became Memento, so flashbacks aren't new to him or his family.
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 07:58 AM) I think this is key right here. The two areas the org has seen real improvement - the draft (Hostetler) and re-opening the Intl pipeline (Paddy) - were both hires from fully OUTSIDE the org. That's not to say you can't ever promote from within or hire someone you know. But if you've been consistently underperforming for a long while in an area (like player development), you'd think they'd want to get someone from outside and with a lot of experience. They got someone from the outside that has experience, yes it's only 2 years but what's wrong with giving someone their shot? It's already been said here that people in the game speak highly of him.
  18. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 17, 2016 -> 01:51 AM) Darin Erstad must be coming next as the "grindy" baserunning coach. Or Mark Kotsay... Mark Kotsay has major league coaching experience and Erstad is a successful college coach.
  19. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 06:55 PM) This organization has lost the benefit of the doubt. So that's an excuse to act... irrationally?
  20. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 16, 2016 -> 06:30 PM) Well that's a bit unfair, don't you think? I don't think it is but I definitely thinks this unfair to criticize a move and it's process, when you don't know the happenings behind the scenes. If you think this is a bad move, please name me someone who you would like instead.
  21. While he is a former Sox player, he has experience outside org and is definitely new blood for the org. If you can name a better person for the job, please do.
  22. Saw La La Land last night and it's instantly one of my all time favorite movies. I'm a big fan of musicals, movies with elaborate sets and costumes and my mom and sisters are all lifelong dancers, needless to say that I was in heaven. When I heard that the film was going to be a modern day and realistic take of song dance movies, I was excited but kind of skeptical but this film really pulled it over, while avoiding every possible cliche. The movie is a love story but its more about the role that love plays in the lives of people who are 'going for it'. And it ask if you can have have love in the pursuit of accomplishing your greatest dreams and desires. There are some really memorials scenes and numbers but my personal favorite was the one where Emma Stone and her roommates get ready to go out. The cinematography was amazing with an awesome color palette. It's no secret that Emma Stone is super pale, so I love that she was always in dark spaces and wearing colors that popped on her and played well on her complexion. The costumes were all sharp and had a lot of detail, from the dresses to the suits. The editing was great too, I don't know how they edited the opening number, I get a headache think I about it. Also it was shot on film, so bonus points. I'm a big, big fan of Ryan Gosling but it always bothered me that he shies away from 'typical leading man' type career moves, hopefully with this and the upcoming Blade Runner sequel, he starts to embrace that leading man status. People were talking about the film's Oscar chances and a lot of people brought him up. He was really great in the film and probably his best work. I think Damien Chazelle is making a Neil Armstrong biopic next, I love that each project of his is so radically different from the last.
  23. I like that McEwing is back, people speak very highly of him and to have him in a bigger role should make the Sox better in the dugout. Was hoping for new blood from outside the org but I'll take it.
  24. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 14, 2016 -> 10:58 AM) This organization is a joke I think Severson is a good hitting coach. Look at what he's had to work with and look at how better guys in the minors are doing.
