I agree that the time to trade Robert was in 2023 vs now, but there’s a huge difference between what teams were willing to offer in 2016/17 vs now or even a few years ago. If the hauls Hahn got back are the measuring stick, we will be disappointed in the return no matter what.

Sox are already burning service time on a number of young players, but aren't remotely close to winning. Adding another in Baty just doesn't make sense IMO.

Which is why I'm always baffled when they don't take full advantage of the Rule 5 draft. They should be scowering other orgs for 'diamond in the rough' types, even if its just for depth. Cuz it's not like the Sox have a loaded system overflowing with talent all needing roster spots.

Guys in the low minors don't tend to need Rule 5 protection though. If they can't advance to higher levels after 5 years, the risk of losing them is low. Or aren't a huge loss if they do get taken. Not really sure what you're worried about in this line of thinking.

Yeah, you purporting such doesn't make this true. I have never claimed anyone was overvaluing Robert. It wouldn't take much of a rebound for Robert to be worth his $20M option IMO. Him taking a $10M AAV contract running through his age 32 season is a fairly absurd assertion. If he were to rebound to a league average bat, I think he would be worth a $4/80M gamble for a contender not worried about pinching pennies.
