  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 2, 2016 -> 05:49 PM) It still bothers me that they're unwilling to go outside and even listen. The Braves just set interviews with like 4 guys, including all their assistant coaches and their interim coach. How do you know 100% certainty that you won't hear a guy come in with a perspective you haven't thought of before? I would also add that they should have waited a short time to see if a surprise candidate surfaced. The Cubs didn't know Maddon would be dropped into their laps. By waiting a week or so they may have found 1 or 2 other people. But, hopefully this is step one in an off-season that will regain some credibility to an organization that is in a really down period.
  2. If KW leaves, this could be great news for the"Drake". He can return for spring training.
  3. QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Oct 1, 2016 -> 12:18 PM) A chance? Yeah, absolutely. I think Porcello gets it, but I don't think it will be a landslide and it would totally shock me if Kluber won it either. I don't think Britton, Verlander, Happ, or Hamels have a chance. Although I think they should be a separate category, I think Britton will be 3rd especailly w O's late surge for a WC.
  4. QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Oct 1, 2016 -> 04:20 AM) Barring a really bad start Sunday, Sale has locked up the fWAR and pWAR titles. That's why I posted what he needs to do ERA and WHIP wise to be better than Porcello. If he accomplishes that, then the only traditional stats the old-thinking writers can point to is wins and walks. Sale would have the advantage in IP, ERA, K, WHIP, H/9. I would rather have Sale come back( he will not be traded) next year w a chip on his shoulder for not winning it. I also think he finishes 3-4 in ballots.
  5. QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Sep 30, 2016 -> 05:19 PM) Porcello makes his final start tonight. Could really use a nice RIGHT THERE FRED from Toronto to knock down that pretty ERA. Game will start late due to Ortiz Tribute. It may be a distraction for Porcello.
  6. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Sep 30, 2016 -> 01:34 AM) Well they made a run at .500 but it turns out to be four straight years under .500 and seven out of the last 10. Not good. Mark But they have improved on last year as they will finish closer to .500 than last year. I think by the end of 2017 we can see a solid .500 team......
  7. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Sep 30, 2016 -> 08:09 AM) Maddon helped the Cubs win 6 extra games or so. Savvy trades for Rizzo, Arieta, Hendricks, Russell and a closer nabbed in Rule V were worth a lot more wins. And not a "proven veteran" among them, Kenny Williams. You forgot a couple. Last I looked Lester and Lackey had 30 wins. They were proven veterans.
  8. Maybe there is another factor, age. When JR was 60 or 70 maybe he would react differently. But at 80 now, JR may be in "retirement mode" and is not anxious to "blow it up". So Kenny, Hahn and Robin's jobs are safe because loyalty/continuity are more important to JR than winning. JR's net worth is more than a $ billion these days so status quo to him may be acceptable.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 28, 2016 -> 02:56 PM) Off the top of my head, I found Connie Mack whose teams lost 610 games over a six season span... in a 154 game schedule. Agree but poster said "recent memory"
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 28, 2016 -> 02:14 PM) Not even close. WRONG. That honor would probably go to Buddy Bell who had a .418 winning percentage with 3 different teams. Maybe that is why he has a lofty position with the White Sox.
  11. QUOTE (Black_Jack29 @ Sep 27, 2016 -> 06:15 PM) While I would also not be super-happy about the defensive downgrade of moving Eaton back to CF, the Sox need another high-OBP player more than they need Eaton if RF. Finding a CF who can hit and get on base with a .330+ OBP AND be a defensive upgrade to Eaton is going to be difficult. Especially considering that the Sox are probably not going to give out a $120M+ contract and currently aren't a popular destination for free agents. Also consider that most free agents don't want to DH... unless they're old, slow, and injury-prone like Morneau. If Hahn were able to convince somebody like Cespedes or Reddick to sign with the Sox, I doubt there's any way that either would agree to DH. A best-case scenario to address OF/DH for the Sox this offseason would probably be signing Reddick, moving Eaton back to CF, and convincing Morneau to sign a two-year deal to be our primary DH. I think that Reddick is pretty much a pipe dream, and my guess is that Morneau will end up paying for a team that's closer to winning a ring (e.g., Boston). Unless Boston is very busy trading in the offseason, I don't see them adding a DH. I think Panda and Hanley Ramirez will take the AB's of Ortiz.
  12. QUOTE (hi8is @ Sep 27, 2016 -> 01:23 AM) Shields gave up 1 run, 2 walks, and no homers over 6 innings? What the hell is happening here??? Why they call him "Big Game". Sox are streaking to stay ahead of Rockies who are now 2 back.
  13. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 24, 2016 -> 03:45 PM) Because at one point he was a White Sox. His guy is LaRussa. It may be his dream job. Go get him and give Jimmy an offer he can't refuse. He is still on the young side at 73. Let's go get Joe Torre who was a great manager and has friends in high places.
  14. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 24, 2016 -> 12:24 AM) That's basically going winless on the road. Four measley wins. LOL. Good job, Robin, Coop and the rest of you coaches and scouts. and players
  15. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Sep 24, 2016 -> 05:39 AM) My hope is for the team get younger and aim toward a 3 year rebuild program. I feel Dave Martinez would do wonders with younger players and get the most out of them. Even though we clearly know they will continue to try and scrap together a roster via the weak free agent market and mediocre trades, I would still like them to sign Martinez to a 4 year deal. That is my hope-- the reality: scrap together another mediocre roster, sign an oddball free agent that will cost the team their first round draft pick and will sign AJ or Konerko to become manager. He was Maddon's right hand man and got passed over in Tampa( as well as several other jobs) even though they got to see him first hand for years. My guess is he may be more a #2 than a #1.
  16. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 22, 2016 -> 02:55 PM) My entire point is that if you're going to have Adam Eaton and Melky Cabrera in your outfield accounting for less home runs combined than a Jose Valentin or a Joe Crede of years would typically get on their own, and if Tim Anderson is in your infield with Tyler Saladino, and you have a BLACK HOLE at catcher..... beyond the 65 homers you can count on with Abreu and Frazier, WHERE ARE YOUR HOME RUNS COMING FROM? This year in the AL, RBI's not HR's is the telling statistic. The Top 3 in the AL are the 3 division leaders. The two wildcard favorites Balt and Toronto are 4th and 6th. In HR, Cleveland is 10th.
  17. QUOTE (raBBit @ Sep 21, 2016 -> 12:57 PM) No matter how many people are in consideration, Sox fans will hate the move unless it's Dave Martinez. Doubt it will be Martinez. He was -in-house in Tampa and they passed over him for cash. I vote for Chili Davis.
  18. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 20, 2016 -> 12:04 PM) The blame here rests squarely on Robin's shoulders. They've got guys like Abreu, Frazier and Q that lead by example, character and grit. They've got intense, win-at-all-cost players like Eaton, Lawrie, Sale and Rodon. Anderson and Saladino seem like they've got fire. Avi busts his ass. Robin needs to get everyone else rallied. Seems like he can't. I disagree. The blame should rest on the shoulders of the person(s) who has decided each year that Robin will stay.
  19. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 19, 2016 -> 08:06 PM) I'm sure the front office doesn't see this as a problem. It's scouting. It's our team not responding to the challenge. Other teams treat the games more importantly than the Sox. They realize uh, these games matter more! It's going to take a while to get over this ineptitude vs. the Central. We need a good manager first of all. I don't know if just adding Renteria is going to matter much. They can't possibly be thinking of Renteria. If they were they would have dumped Robin mid-season and test drove Renteria the 2nd half. If the FO goes that route, they are dumber than I think.
  20. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 18, 2016 -> 08:35 PM) I would be surprised if those guys you mention AREN'T in baseball next year. I am not sure what your post is all about I agree with you. Avi for example will be on some ML roster next year. I took his post to mean that Robin is saddled with a roster that has several players who are not ML caliber.
  21. QUOTE (Lillian @ Sep 18, 2016 -> 01:17 PM) I haven't been to Spring Training in about 7 years, after spending almost every March in Arizona, during the previous decade. I now have a truck camper, and am considering spending this Spring near Camelback Ranch, for Spring Training. I thought that I'd get started planning and wondered if anyone has any insight into some good possibilities for RV "camping" near Camelback Ranch. Your suggestions would be appreciated. Try contacting the local Chamber of Commerce.
  22. QUOTE (harkness @ Sep 17, 2016 -> 10:11 PM) another strong outing by Gonzalez. He, Saladino and Anderson are three players who most expected little contributions this season . But all 3 should go into next year with a bright outlook.
  23. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 16, 2016 -> 04:40 PM) I think they looked at the veteran in Rollins when making their starting SS decision. I always liked Saladino and I think Rollins was meant to be almost a player/coach to help the SS youngsters. The Sox got away from that. Saladino was penciled in as the super IF sub. The injury to Lawrie changed that. Really a question of what do they plan for 2017. If Lawrie is healthy I think he starts at 2B and Anderson at SS and Frazier at 3B. Saladino returns to the super IF sub role. Now if we trade Lawrie then Sally starts and Garcia and Sanchez play the super role I am not sure of lawrie's contract status. But I doubt Lawrie has any value since he has been out so long. I would guess they bring him back and hope he has some value next July when the trade deadline approaches.
  24. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 16, 2016 -> 09:46 AM) You keep using losses as your reasoning, so I guess I do feel differently. Boston backed away from one injured guy and moved right on to another, and you are acting like they are smart for it because WINS Shields has been god awful, there is no way around that. but at the time of the trade he had 1 bad start the entire season, the 10 run crap start before he was traded. Look at his game logs http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/...p&year=2016 Mostly QS until the last start Look at the ERA. There is a difference of 2 runs per game for guys on the same pitching staff. Pomeranz was having a good year and was on a good stretch when he was traded.
  25. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 15, 2016 -> 10:41 PM) Actually there isn't much of a difference. Before the ten run game, he gave up 2, 3, and 0 runs. So let's stop acting like prior to the one ten run outing there were tons of red flags, Shields was actually pretty decent. Both Sox seem to have gotten swindled by Preller Pomeranz was 8-7 w a 2.47 ERA. He won his last 4 starts before trade deadline. Shields was 2-7 w a 4.28 ERA and lost his last 3 starts. That is a huge difference in my opinion but I guess you and Hahn both felt differently. More importantly Shields's fastball had lost velocity which was the main reason Boston backed away. So should the White Sox.
