Build Your Own Deal with the Mariners

Are we even still talking to the Mariners? I know that we were around the winter meetings when we didn't have Davidson yet and the idea was putting Ackley or Franklin at third -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 22, 2014 -> 03:11 PM) If, as it was written above, the Mariners or someone would take Dunn for the guy straight up...well of course I'm doing it, but that's because you save $14 million on Dunn. Otherwise, basically not worth anything to me. Yeah I'd do that deal all day -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 22, 2014 -> 03:05 PM) I could be convinced otherwise, but I'm leaning in the "he was never really all that good and convinced people he was thanks to the juice" direction right now. Yeah me too, but also in my scenario, we wouldn't giving up anything much for him (unless he is literally a throw in for someone better we would be getting). But yeah, I would take him not expecting much but hoping he could come out surprising next Spring in better shape. -

The only way I would want Montero is if the White Sox made him a catcher again and also made him lose a bunch of weight this season and off-season. Have him come into next Spring Training thinner and ready to compete for a catching spot. I think he kind of got depressed after how last season went and I think he definitely is the kind of guy that needs to be in a different organization. -
The best lineup/getting Paulie into the mix/showing off the new expensive toy (Abreu) might be: 1B: Paulie (last opening day start on field) DH: Abreu LF: Dunn I'd personally just start Paulie over Dunn though but after that, strict platoon.

With the logjam, Dunn to get time in the outfield

QUOTE (scs787 @ Feb 20, 2014 -> 06:25 PM) Lol, there's a log jam in the OF too. Keep it simple Robin, Dunn vs RHP and PK vs LHP. This^ -

How about this other Cuban shortstop? Aledmys Diaz? Now I know people will complain that we have depth in rhe middle infield (Semien, Sanchez, Johnson) but it doesn't hurt to have more. Plus, you could always trade depth at one position for other team's young depth (like one of those guys for a pitcher in a deep system or outfielder or catcher if there is a team deep on catching). Also throwing this out because its been really boring on here...

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Feb 16, 2014 -> 02:49 PM) Would you pass up on that salary? I know I wouldn't. No I wouldn't which is also why I said I wish haha but if your heart isn't it like Meche (retired with with a year and more than 10 mill left on contract) and Dempster than its possible. We have seen Dunn say that he will stop playing when hes not having fun so anything is possible (though I know he won't)
-
Too bad Dunn won't sit this year out...

I do not see De Aza as a fit for Seattle. Wait like another month and we may see some suitors pop up

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 13, 2014 -> 09:14 AM) Marc Topkin @TBTimes_Rays 8m BREAKING: #Rays have traded Lobaton, and 2 others (likely minor leaguers), to #Nats for RHP Nate Karns. Good. Now maybe since they picked up some depth they'll be less likely to take Nieto back if he doesn't stick on the 25 and we can put him in the minors

I think Abreu will struggle a bit the first two months but take off when summer hits

White Sox could handle signing gay player-KW
brian310 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I hope they would handle signing a gay player. Its not even a big deal. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 11, 2014 -> 09:47 AM) When was the last time the White Sox signed a player to a 1 year deal and dealt him at the deadline? The last one I can seriously remember is Kenny Lofton. They've never really been in a position to. They usually are competitive and not in a position to. 07 for example, they were bad but in 08 they were competitive again. I can't remember if we signed anyone in 08 to one year deals, but we were competitive and we didn't really need to rebuild and flip players.
-
What about the idea of signing Santana to a one year deal with the idea of trading him at the deadline? He would lose eligibility of being offered the qualifying offer next offseason and we could receive a package of prospects that would be closer to helping than a second round pick. It would also help his value (if he pitches good). Obviously, the only risk is money and possibilty and second round pick.

Sports Illustrated Ranks Sox #2 in Best MLB Offseason List

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Feb 10, 2014 -> 08:56 PM) Wait, why are the Cardinals number 1?? What the hell did they do? Over paid for a SS that just got off a suspension and trade a hometown hero for a CF that hasn't proven much at the MLB level? And sign an old back up? Cards didn't really have a whole lot to do. Peralta will be way better than anyone else the Cards would run out there. And even overpaying him, their payroll for this upcoming season is far lower than it was last year (thanks to a lot of young pitching and position players making next to nothing). With that said, I agree we should be above them. -
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Feb 8, 2014 -> 04:45 PM) In that scenario, they have to get rid of Ackley then to make room for Cruz. Then what, get rid of Saunders for De Aza? Not a chance. I didn't say they should deal for De Aza. That was someone else. I guess Ackley still plays center in each scenario listed above.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Feb 8, 2014 -> 05:56 PM) Move Smoak where? Via trade? Or move positions? Meant in a trade. He can hit from the left side and would make sense for Pittsburgh
-
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Feb 8, 2014 -> 04:34 PM) I don't see how they'd have room for De Aza. They're already going to have to get rid of a starting position player to make room for Cruz. DH: Hart 1B: Smoak LF: Morrison RF: Cruz Though I think it would be wise to move Smoak and play Morrison at first and play Cruz in left with a Saunders/Gutierrez platoon in the outfield

QUOTE (rowand's rowdies @ Feb 7, 2014 -> 04:29 PM) Arroyo to DBacks for 2/23.5 w team option for 3rd year + some type of buyout $ I'm sure + incentive $. Most likely at least 2/25 by the time its all said and done. That would have been a really bad deal for the White Sox, and I personally will eat crow for suggesting (before I realized he is 37, because he has been baseball's most durable pitcher for the last 3-5 years. My bad. Bad deal for the DBacks, who just pushed Archie Bradley out of the rotation. That means Ervin Santana is going to cost a 2nd rd pick AND minimum 2/28 w option for 3rd year (buyout of at least $2 million). So he's at cheapest/shortest 2/30, most likely with incentive $ that means if he is good his salary goes up. Ideally the White Sox would want him at 3 years, to have 1-2 years of him when we are competitive. 3 years/$42 million is the cheapest he is coming, and that's without a buyout or incentives that there are sure to be. I don't see a good deal for the White Sox here, so I officially change my mind to NO on all remaining SP FAs. Bradley will pitch at some point this year. McCarthy will get hurt plus there are always moves that can be made

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Feb 6, 2014 -> 04:08 PM) Kenny knew the Cards weren't going to trade Rasmus without getting EJax in the deal, so he held up the Jays with the demand of taking on Teahen's contract, and it worked. In that deal everyone won: Jays got the player they wanted without having to give up top pieces from the farm, Kenny dumped Teahen and picked up a quality (back then) prospect in Stewart plus Frasor who turned into Jaye & Webb, and the Cards of course won the World Series. Rarely do 3-ways benefit all 3 parties, but that one did. Yeah I understand that taking on Teahen helped them land Jackson but that doesn't mean Teahen didn't had any actual value in the deal other than that. Who knows maybe without Teahen in the deal we could have gotten more than Frasor and Stewart and maybe we just settled on that as fair for the two as a package
-
Teahen definitely did not help us land Jaye and Webb. He was a throw in in the deal with Jackson and it helped Toronto make the blockbuster Rasmus deal.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 4, 2014 -> 08:43 AM) If the Sox got an offer they felt was right or close to for De Aza, they likely would have taken it by now. I don't think that has happened. The gist as I understand it is that the Sox are looking to move him but haven't received the offer yet for a number of reasons. Come Spring, there will likely be a team that shows interest in him and they'll be able to work something out. They still have almost 2 months to move him prior to the start of the season. The other thought is that he can play anywhere in the outfield and is still cheap enough to be used as depth. There's no rush to move him, but trading him would be ideal. I wasn't advocating them to do it now or soon but yeah in Spring Training injuries happen and some young guys penciled in to start make tank or really bad and he can look appealing to that team. .
