  1. Also (since the Adam Dunn thread is closed), I think they should sell on De Aza now. I think he has pretty much reached his ceiling as a big leaguer: decent blend of power and speed, capable of playing a litter center. He's not a bad ball player, but not a part of the future. He's at least solid enough to start on a few teams. Also a left-handed bat. Having him as the 4th outfielder would just decrease his value. Playing Dunn for half a season may bring his value up from none to at least a little.
  2. I think we will catch lightning in a bottle with one of the project lefties they have brought in on minor league deals/invited to Spring Training. De Los Santos (picked up from TB), Surkamp, Robles, Crawford (picked up from TOR)...I think one of them can stick and be solid in the pen. Remember, Thornton was a no body until he started working with Cooper and he was about 27 so anything is really possible.
  3. QUOTE (Jake @ Feb 1, 2014 -> 12:49 AM) If we have interest in Colby Rasmus, then things have gone horribly wrong Agree I don't want him
  4. De Aza wouldn't DH. Viciedo would get DH at bats against righties and Paulie would against lefties
  5. 1. Dunn will not be offered a qualifying offer 2. If he was offered one, he'd accept in s heartbeat 3. If he declined, no one would even sign him if he was tied to a draft pick
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 04:02 PM) As long as Dunn hits fairly well the first few months of the season, and as long as the Sox are not in 1st place in July... Dunn will get traded near the deadline to a contender, in exchange for a lottery ticket prospect at best (org filler at worst). Someone like Andy Wilkins will play the LHH DH role for a few months if he does well at AAA, if not, they'll just rotate other guys through that slot. Then we'll see someone new at DH for 2015, possibly Viciedo if he progresses, possibly someone outside the org. In any case, he isn't going anywhere right now because right now he gets nothing of value. Well if De Aza is still on the team at that point, then I think Viciedo would get at bats in the DH spot and then De Aza would start in left. It would essentially become a De Aza/Paulie platoon.
  7. I think if the sox can get something back for him on July 31, then you might as well offer to pay he remaining 5 mill left at that point in the year just to fully maximize his value. At that point in the season, you would have already paid the man 10 mill anyway.
  8. If they could get a solid prospect in return for Dunn, then would no longer be here.
  9. Against righties: Eaton Ramirez Abreu Dunn (maybe flip him and Abreu?) Garcia Viciedo Gillaspie (unless Davidson makes the team) Beckham Nieto Against Lefties Eaton Ramirez Abreu Paulie Garcia Viciedo Beckham Flowers Keppinger (unless Davidson makes the team)
  10. I don't see any of the guys we have left to trade equaling a young catcher. For the guys we have to offer, I think you are talking fringey kind of bullpen arms, which on this team could be diamond in the roughs considering Coop's history with getting good use out of them. Thornton was like 27 when we got him and he was in horrible shape until Coop worked his magic.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 09:29 PM) Except not really. It is in the Sox MO to protect their veterans wishes. They don't trade those guys unless they want to go. That is why Peavy wasn't moved until he basically asked in public to go. I feel like that Peavy part isn't right
  12. Free agents offered the qualifying offer had to accept it like a week or two after the season ended. He obviously rejected it. He doesn't have to come back at 14.1 unless they agree on that. But he can go back for less.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 08:17 PM) It will be quite hilarious when Erwin Santana is forced back to the Royals on that $14.1 million qualifying offer and they are unable to trade him when he stinks it up this year. Why does it have to be 14.1? It'd be funnier if he had to settle for less on a 1 year deal. May be his best choice to try to put together another splid year.
  14. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 10:24 AM) What the hell is with people's obsessions with Jake Elmore? I don't get it. The guy is not a Major League caliber player. I'd say the odds of Elmore getting a roster spot over Davidson or Garcia are slim to none. I was just saying he would give them more versatility on our bench which is something we lack with Konerko coming back. And this is of course assuming Davidson doesn't make the team meaning Gillaspie/Keppinger are still apart of the logjam.
  15. Elmore could possibly make the team to platoon at third with Gillaspie if Keppinger is moved. He has experience all over the diamond and was even an emergency catcher one game last year which could be key considering whoever sits in a game out of the Konerko/Dunn platoon will probably pinch hit for the catcher in the late innings of a game and if anything happened to the backup catcher in there 1-2 innings of having to catch, he could step in. Then assuming Davidson starts the year in AAA, he plays third, Sanchez plays short, and Semien plays second with Garcia getting at bats around the infield and outfield. All these guys can get extra at bats in the DH spot as well.
  16. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 12:01 AM) Guys, we're getting pretty close to spring training. I think Hahn is done. Only possible move I see is signing a free agent catcher like Buck. I'm assuming Buck is still out there. Personally if he's done for this year I'd prefer passing on a hack catcher. Go with Phegs and Flowers and see if either can play. Flowers stunk royally last year, but s***, we've stuck with other Sox players much longer than Flowers. I could stomach giving him another chance since Becks keeps getting chance after chance and the same with Dunn. I think with all our additions I MAY buy mlb.com again but I think we are still well well well below a .500 team at this date. Buck already signed
  17. Paulino isn't expected to be ready by opening day right?
  18. Agree I think Hanson and Dice-K are the more interesting names. Cheap possible "catching lightning in the bottle moves"
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 12:35 PM) Padilla thinks we will sign a mid-tier pitcher FA. http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/white-sox/...iss-with-tanaka Some of those guys aren't even available any more
  20. They could also take a flyer on Tommy Hanson. Only 27 and he isn't eligible to be a free agent until 2016 so if he sucks this year they can non-tender him.
  21. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 09:37 PM) The whole Garcia thing intrigues me. I want to buy a jersey but if he changes... (see my post in page 4) All the Freddy Garcia jerseys become relevant again haha
  22. What if he comes out swinging like he did in 2011 where you know you can't get anything for him? The roster spot could go to someone more versatile and in June, you would have already paid about a third of his salary for the year too by that point.
  23. I would still love to see Rick move Dunn but we all know that is unlikely. Does anyone see the Sox releasing Dunn in June if the Sox are playing bad and he starts off bad for the first 2 months knowing that they have Paulie and Viciedo who could get DH at bats? Assuming they hang onto De Aza, it wouldn't be bad since we would be stuck paying him either way.
  24. QUOTE (Knuckles @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 03:30 PM) @jaysonst: Now hearing Tanaka decision could go all the way till Friday. Clubs not in bidding hearing rumblings he took physical while in LA this month Old news
  25. C'mon Hahn! Option for a 7th year plus opt outs!
