Alternatively I would have been okay with Shields going in there just to bean Ortiz and get tossed. Alas, he only walked him. -

It wouldn't make Shields look bad, it would leave his line relatively clean. What would make him look bad is letting him go through the lineup again until he gives up a couple more hits, then having a reliever give up the inherited runners. As soon as it flipped to the front of the order, they went 2-for-3 against him and scored a run. I don't care about his pitch count. Get him out. -

Robin should pull Shields now. Be wary of third time through the order and let him leave this one with some good vibes. -

QUOTE (Baron @ Jun 23, 2016 -> 01:46 PM) So they are running a poll asking which pitcher the Red Sox should trade for...Sale or Q...what a bunch of idiots Boston sports fans are, very literally, the worst in the country. It's not up for debate. -
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-teams-w...d-money-in-mlb/ A little dated maybe (I know San Diego has probably jumped onto this list). Nobody mentioned Cleveland.

He's fine. I didn't see a lot of people claiming we rushed Rodon and that he needed to take his lumps in Charlotte at the end of last season. If he were in Charlotte there'd be no lumps, he'd just be dominating. We haven't seen his best baseball yet. It's unfortunate he hasn't rocketed off like Aaron Nola, but he also doesn't get to face all those squishy NL lineups.

Yeah I doubt Boyer has anything to do with this one. Ads promoting individual games have always made some odd choices. "Melky Cabrera and the Sox look to put the brakes on Alcides Escobar and the Royals, tonight at 7 on CSN!" Okay... fine, if you insist. Yes, those are two players on those teams.

Kershaw is such an absolute monster that it's hard to pick against him, so I'm gonna narrowly pick Trout too. Just toss him in and get his all-around game, night in night out. I think about Quintana and his 5-7 record despite studly numbers; that's where my head's at.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 10:40 AM) A small decline is much different than this. Even thinking of something a little worse than his career line makes sense to me. When you have people complaining that James Shields hasn't been DFA's after two starts, yes, I will mock that. A small decline can become a big one very quickly. Even if I count as fact that Shields has identified and fixed this mechanical flaw, the benchmark from here on out, IMO, is a 4.50 ERA. I'll be surprised if he beats it.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 10:04 AM) A Hall of Fame pitcher just publicly posted his mechanical flaw. People can either go with that, or they can go with their idea that in the matter of 3 starts James Shields has completely forgotten how to pitch. Or, perhaps, the people who disagree with you are not simpletons, and there's a third line of thinking, which is that his peripherals, velocity, general ability - all of it has been declining as his advancing age would suggest, and that he was never nearly good enough to maintain a 3.02 ERA or whatever he had. I was against acquiring him well before the last three starts. Like I said, time will tell.

QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 09:16 AM) I'm squarely in the Yes column -- the only caveat being, I don't want to hear about his $9mm is handicapping us signing FA in the offseason like they did with LaRoche and Danks. Shields has a track record. He should be able to be better than Danks by a bit -- which doesn't sound great. But give me a 4.20 era and 200 innings out of my #5 all day. If Shields can put up those numbers it'll be fantastic. I just doubt his ability to do it. Time will tell. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 09:04 AM) Ummm, anywhere? If you take a poll of people, would you sign James Shields for 3yr 27mm I think the majority would say yes -- even with these bad starts. Put me in the no column.

Got fed up with this game at 6-0, so in honor of that score I watched Buehrle's perfect game on my DVR and pretended it was live. I monitored the real game on my phone and I'm pretty sure the mojo from watching the perfecto is what caused the comeback. EDIT: Just remembered that the perfect game was 5-0. Leaving the error in. I must live with my shame.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 14, 2016 -> 08:56 AM) I was never a fan of the trade, but Shields is not as bad as these most recent two starts. He's trending the wrong direction but he didn't just become the worst pitcher in baseball overnight. That said, I do think if given the shot in San Diego, Johnson, will end up putting up better numbers over the next three years than Shields. No, he is not 16 ERA bad. I do not expect him to be worth what we're paying him though.
-
I hope Shields doesn't spoil his dinner with all the innings he's eating. Everybody in the front office responsible for this trade should consider a different line of work. Shields is going to be an albatross so fast.

QUOTE (Black_Jack29 @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 12:38 PM) There's a difference between making smart moves and making moves for the sake of making a move. Shields was a "DO SOMETHING!" move that probably won't help the team all that much. Erik Johnson and Latos could've done Shields' job at a fraction of the cost. Morneau is a smart move that has a chance of actually helping the team. He's older and coming off of an injury, but will probably be more productive than Avi after his rehab stint. Yes. I'll add the Anderson callup to the DO SOMETHING category, as there's a definite downside if it doesn't work out that's been covered here very well. But it also has upside too. The Shields trade was just garbage. I think we're gonna be hating that for a long time.
-
Our front office is behaving like they're in danger of losing their jobs. Whether they actually are can be debated, but they've shown all the telegraphs of a desperate group since the Shields trade.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 10, 2016 -> 10:55 AM) It wasn't that simple with Rodon. Didn't think I needed to green that one. -
Y'know, in case you weren't sure what to believe.

Sitting here balancing the usual excitement of seeing a top prospect called up with the certainty that they're rushing it. I dunno guys.

Kershaw is doing things that rival peak Pedro. He's in the conversation.
