If they don't dump for him literally anything in the next 3 weeks (including cash with him or not), it feels like they may just pick up the option and gamble again. Otherwise, what would be the point?

I think they'll include whatever the amount is for the buyout (if a team decides to go that route at the end of the year). They are not getting back much either though. Might as well have just tossed in $10M cash in the offseason and moved him considering that's about what they will have paid him when they trade him.

I don’t disagree with anything you said. I was just pointing out that it would be hard to figure out his value. He’s been cold and with so much control, better off just holding onto him. I think he will figure it out though. I love his approach at the plate.

What would Vargas even be worth? Since they traded for him, he had a stretch of being the worst hitter, then from end of April through like May he was good, and since he’s been bad again. He is young and has time on his side though.

I don’t think there’s even much risk to them just carrying 2 and playing them both every day. So what. A catcher gets hurt one game and you have to pinch hit for the pitchers spot throughout the game after moving the DH to C. Not like these games matter much. So I’m on board with 3 catchers and launching someone useless.
