Not an extension to give up free agent years, but a deal that would effectively get him on the roster now and still become a free agent after the same season he would be a free agent if the Sox waited until next year to promote him. It very well may. You just know this place would be grilling the front office for calling Zack Collins up and having him sit on the bench 3 games in a row. They're already playing with a 3-man bench so having another guy who can play 1st or 3rd or take an at bat this weekend in a pinch hitting spot.

I'm not going to argue that it should be Palka, or Reed, or Skole since they're all at least 26 now (Skole being the oldest) and Palka and Reed haven't done much with their chances this year and they're all likely what they are at this point. But yeah, it should be Collins or Mercedes (also 26, but at least give him a shot, at least hes different).

Just checked. 10 left against the O's. But they also of course play the Rays, Yankees, and Red Sox a lot (23 games if I counted correctly). For the rest of the breakdown: 6 against the Mariners 3 against Dodgers 3 against Astros 3 against Rangers 4 against Braves (awkward interleague rivals)

They can catch the Mariners. Maybeeee Marlins and Jays.
