To the argument of "get him to the majors so he can see MLB pitching and improve in the off-season": how is he going to work on anything without seeing MLB pitching in the off-season? He can't exactly work on and adjust without seeing it consistently (learning to lay off MLB caliber sliders and curves low and away for example).

Steve Stone mentioned the Red Sox did something similar with their starters. Brought them along slowly in Spring Training. Obviously, it showed early in the season but there are 162 games for a reason.

So everyone who thinks Abreu is worth a lot should stop thinking that. I was just saying at most he's worth around what the Mariners got for Edwin.

Give him extra rest throughout the season. Like how the Sox handled Sale his first year in the rotation where they would skip him here and there (they handled the situation better than the Nats with Strasburg).

I think the poster means a deal where he can come up this year, and we would have him for 7 years becoming a free agent the same year as he would if he came up mid-April 2020. He might sacrifice some money by avoiding arbitration though.

For 2020? Abreu definitely fits. After that and long-term? Not really. I do think they should roll with Abreu/Collins at 1B/DH (with Collins getting a start or 2 behind the plate each week) and carrying a versatile 3rd catcher like Swihart on the bench next year.
