2017-2018 MLB player movement rumors and reports
Bob Sacamano replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Justin Upton signed a 5-year deal. He got an extra year and an extra $18 million in this agreement. Honestly, probably a good choice for him. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 11:17 AM) The trick for the Dodgers this offseason is - do they want to really make an effort to get under the luxury tax 1 year? If they do, they can launch a spending spree next offseason without having to pay the multi-year repeater penalties. Based on their previous purchases and guys like Seager hitting arbitration in 2019, it's possible that getting under the tax for 1 year could save them more than $50 million in 2019 and 2020. If that happens to be the case, the deal should probably expand to add another prospect or two and then another over-priced pitcher like McCarthy or Kazmir. With the Sox payroll being so low, it's a possibility for sure. That would be taking on about $40 mill but for only one season if it is Kazmir and about $34 mill for one season if you took on McCarthy. The Sox would have to get some pretty good prospects for that, whether it be low minors or not. White Sox off-season outlook on MLBTR has their payroll at $45 mill after arbitration raises as of now.

Shohei Otani is likely coming to the USA

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 5, 2017 -> 08:22 AM) Actually, before he goes through the Japanese posting process, the MLB and NPB have to AGREE to a posting process, as the current one expired with the end of our season. This is an underreported component of this story. One of the reporters on a Japanese baseball podcast I follow said that Yomiuri (the newspaper) published some leaked proposals from the MLB, and they all look substantially worse for the NPB than the previous system, which is right on line with the way the trend has gone. The consensus opinion over there seems to be that these proposals are simply not good enough and the NPB should push back, but the podcaster specifically opined that he wasn't sure the NPB has the backbone to do so. But, based on Manfred's public opinions about non-draft eligible new players, if the NPB DID push back much, the MLB seems unlikely to cave, even if it meant there was no system in place for the foreseeable future. If no agreement is in place, the only way Otani (this is the correct spelling, despite the fact that his jersey says 'Ohtani' -- according to a Japanese intern here at work, Japanese baseball takes the correctness of the name on the jersey much less seriously than American baseball, meaning that the players choose whatever they want to be on there, with many choosing first names or even nicknames. Several players have added an 'h' after a stressed 'O' apparently to encourage foreigners to actually pronounce their names correctly. Yos***omo Tsutsugo(h) is another example of a star who adds an 'h.' The correct way to pronounce 'Otani' is with the emphasis on the first syllable \OH-tuh-knee\ as opposed to the way we all seem to want to say it with the emphasis on the second syllable \oh-TAH-knee\) can come to America this offseason is if the Fighters decide to grant him unconditional free agency with no compensation at all. This, obviously seems extremely unlikely to occur, BUT That same podcaster personally believes that the Fighters WOULD grant him free agency, because they are specifically trying to brand themselves as a place for young superstars to choose to play specifically because they can be trusted to be lenient when said superstars want to jump to the MLB. Furthermore, those leaked proposals all call for posting fees to, essentially, equal about 15% of the contract that the player ultimately signs. So, in Otani's case, where the absolute maximum he could earn is something like $8mm, and likely far less, the Fighters don't stand to gain much anyway -- almost certainly less than a million bucks. It's all very interesting. Quoting this because it is now relevant. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/nego...ree-agency.html -
QUOTE (Dunt @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 11:08 AM) Yup, I'm conservatively expecting mid May, early June. Anything earlier is bonus. Another idea for this offseason: -Work out a trade with the Dodgers where you are taking on the rest of AGon's contract and getting Yusniel Diaz or DJ Peters Would the current Dodgers front office with Andrew Friendman do that kind of deal though? I think it's more likely they'd just release Gonzalez then trade prospects away with him.

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 09:39 AM) Astros found so much value giving some players chance to figure it out at big league level that would have been marginalized on a competing club. Makes me want to not sign any position players, which was a preference anyway, but underscores it. Yeah I don't think there really is any room to add position players. Even if they were to deal one of Abreu and Avi, there is still other guys in the minors we can give a chance.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 07:44 AM) Not taking the Quintana trade and using less pieces to get Verlander? Yeah and Verlander dominated for them since coming over. The team won every game he started except game 6 of the world series. Also, glad they didn't trade for Q since I prefer Eloy over Kyle Tucker.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 2, 2017 -> 07:33 AM) In my opinion, an adult having sexual relations with a 14 year old is wrong. In your world, because 14 year olds grow up faster in Hollywood and get drunk at adult parties, it's cool. I find that disgusting. This is the majority opinion, really. And it's right.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Nov 1, 2017 -> 05:12 PM) 5 lead changes = muy excitingo So was the 2 hit game 5 It's all good as long as it's not a blow out in my book This. It's been a hell of a series.

QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Nov 1, 2017 -> 01:09 PM) I really, really, really liked Thor Ragnarok. I was shocked at how standalone it was, outside of a couple very subtle lines it didn't really focus on the Infinity Stone. Cate Blanchett and Tessa Thompson were both great. Ruffalo was hilarious but the best character was Korg who had me laughing the entire time he was on screen. I don't know where I would rank this out of all the MCU films but its up there. Where did you see it already? I see there is a 12:20am showing later a the Marcus by me. Someone want to test Movie Pass and go see like a 9:30pm movie and then when the clock hits 12, grab a Thor ticket? haha

QUOTE (Dunt @ Nov 1, 2017 -> 09:55 AM) My dream offseason would look something like: -Sign Jake McGee to a 3 yr, $20 million contract -Sign Welington Castillo to a 2 yr/$18 million contract -Sign Wily Peralta to a 1 yr, $5 million contract -Sign Drew Storen to a 1 yr, $3 million contract C Castillo 1B Abreu 2B Moncada SS Anderson 3B Sanchez LF Delmonico CF L. Garcia RF Avi DH Gillaspie BE Cordell BE Peter BE Narvaez BE Tilson? SP Shields SP Giolito SP Lopez SP Fulmer SP Peralta/Rodon RP McGee RP Storen RP Infante RP Minaya RP Farquhar RP Bummer RP Kubat Sox only dire need at this stage of the rebuild is to get bullpen help. I think Storen could be a solid low cost option. With McGee, they have no real dominating LH RP in their system, so I think he'd be a nice option to shut down games until Burdi is back. With signing Castillo, Sox will get another offensive threat that I dont think will make too much money this offseason. Put up 2.7 fWAR this year in a sneaky good season. Pitch framing sucks, but a tandem of him and Narvaez should be good for ~3-4 wins. I think Peralta would be a smart low risk signing because he gives you insurance for Rodon and can be transitioned to the bullpen. I think you ultimately bring up Kopech and Eloy by June and let it rip second half. This team will be a lot better than people think this season, a couple of smart offseason signings could make the second half really interesting.

QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Oct 31, 2017 -> 01:26 AM) Am I the only one that sees the irony in these two posts? When I went back and actually read his posts, no you're not the only one who sees it

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 30, 2017 -> 09:31 AM) Whether you think adding Stanton is a good idea or not, I just can’t agree with the timing. We should not spend big this offseason as it will be a year too early IMO. If you’re going to take on the considerable risk that is Stanton’s contract, you need to make sure you’re timing the addition right to ensure the biggest potential payoff. I know people are skeptical, but I’d rather see us active in the epic 2018/19 free agent class (even if there is competition) than just jump too early on Stanton. We should have the money to be serious players IMO. Arenado, Machado, Rendon as possible options for third...or going 3-4 years on Donaldson at high AAV (which probably wouldn't be good but could see it happening).

QUOTE (Tony @ Oct 27, 2017 -> 11:01 PM) Screw the haters. Just finished Season 2, thought it was really good. Stranger Things Season 1 was a pleasant surprise for everyone. It had very little hype, spread on social and it really caught on. It was the surprise team of the year. In Season 2, they had a target on their back trying to live up to expectations. And for the most part, they met them. Now that I'm in front of the computer, a few specific thoughts: I'e only watched the first 3 episodes and so far I'm really enjoying it.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 28, 2017 -> 10:45 PM) Big Sick and It were good. American Made and Happy Death Day entertaining Suburbicon, Jigsaw, Geostorm, Kingsmen, Lucky Logan, Snowman, Brads Status, Foreigner, not so good IMO. Getting your money's worth haha me and my buddy are going to start going once a week on like Wednesdays. Marcus does the $5 Tuesdays and Thursdays there are usually movies released so figured it would be the least busy day to go. Also agree with you on these movies.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 27, 2017 -> 02:19 PM) I wonder if it makes cash room for Stanton If they acquire both Heyward and Stanton, depending on the money going their way, they would definitely need to deal both Span and Pence.
-
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Oct 27, 2017 -> 02:17 PM) That is a very interesting trade rumor. As a Sox fan, I wouldn't want to see it happen so the cubs remain stuck like pigs with Heyward's contract. As a baseball fan, it's makes sense for both teams. Yeah I'd rather they have to trade one of their younger guys due to the glut than unclog it by dealing Heyward.
-
QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Oct 27, 2017 -> 02:00 PM) Don't understand how SF benefits from that. That would be the ultimate bail out for the Cubs. They need someone who can cover that outfield so he at least would help prevent runs. And as mentioned, it could save them money.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 27, 2017 -> 10:59 AM) No, that’s what SyFy was invented for lol Funny you say that, because the acting was so bad in this Jigsaw movie, my buddy said it should have been on SyFy lol
-
QUOTE (buhbuhburrrrlz @ Oct 27, 2017 -> 12:52 PM) Binged. All the charm of the first season was lost in the second. I found characters just doing stupid things to move the story further along. Was pretty meh for me. (some things which I won't spoil were just downright cringeworthy) Damn. Hopefully this is just one bad review.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 27, 2017 -> 09:33 AM) I still maintain that if Stanton is moved he gets moved for very little. I think so too. If the team trading for him takes on all of his salary, you're probably looking at what, a B and 2 C prospects type of package? Guys who would fill in after the prospects you get for moving Yelich and Ozuna.

QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 27, 2017 -> 10:28 AM) Just used my MoviePass for first time. Even cooler, I have a loyalty card for theatre that they scanned so I’m getting points towards free stuff without spending more that $10 a month. I wouldn’t waste a swipe of my MoviePass on Geostorm. Ha I think AMC and Marcus both have loyalty card systems at their theaters. And that is exactly how I felt leaving Jigsaw last night lol I've seen the first 7 (only really liked the first 3) so I felt like I should see this one.
-
QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Oct 27, 2017 -> 09:57 AM) So see Geostorm, it's looks to be what Movie Pass was invented for I agree. I forgot to list that movie.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 27, 2017 -> 09:11 AM) I ordered at about 12:10 Pacific...didn't hear my alarm for 10 minutes...and I ended up with a delivery date 2-3 weeks out. Boo. #firstworldproblems

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 27, 2017 -> 08:25 AM) But....we've definitely seen deals exactly like that before. For example - the Blue Jays taking on Tulowitzki while giving up top talent. They also saved about $55 million trading Reyes in that deal.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 09:30 PM) Have to agree there. Ozuna just posted a monster season and has two years of control left. Adding him or Yelich to the deal really changes the complexity. The question is, does Stanton's contract, and/or the Marlins' desire to get back multiple young players/prospects, necessitate the inclusion of one of Ozuna or Yelich? If the Marlins desire a prospect package, it does make sense to potentially consider that, but if you are getting back pieces like Bradley Jr and Boegarts, I am not sure what sense this makes. One would think they would be better off moving Stanton for some prospects and cash, and then moving Yelich and Ozuna for more prospects to further augment their farm system and realign their window. Yeah they can really cash in moving their whole OF. Also could mean more Ichiro at bats! Should also see Gordon, Chen, Volquez, Realmuto, Prado shopped as well this off-season.
