2017 International Signings
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 1, 2017 -> 04:57 PM) Look up the list of guys who have signed for pennies on the dollar out of Latin America. Signing for a lot of money at age 16 isn't nearly as clear of an indicator as signing at 21 or even 18. I mean how you would like to spend $4.25 million on Michael Ynoa, so that you missed out on other guys who go on to be stars for a fraction of that price? You can cherrypick individual players all you want to prove your point, but it's like comparing apples to oranges. Ynoa was nowhere as highly rated as Robert and they don't play the same position either. They're not comparable. It's not like signing Robert would prevent these pennies on the dollar signings anyway, so I'm not sure what your point is.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (raBBit @ Mar 1, 2017 -> 04:01 PM) Dayan Viciedo is nowhere near the prospect Robert is. Robert is the absolute best prospect coming out of Cuba. You bring up Viciedo's bat making him a potential superstar and yeah, that was all he had past a great arm wasted in LF. Robert is physically blessed. He has tools of all sorts that can make him a very productive player even if he has contact issues coming stateside. Yoan Moncada is a far more comparable player to Robert. Both 19-years-old at defecting, both incredibly gifted athletes with in game results. Moncada was signed two years ago this month. He is now, by some accounts, the number 1 prospect in baseball and on the short list of the White Sox most valuable assets. Well said. Even if Robert only becomes a 2-3 WAR player at the big league level, it's still a worthwhile investment IMO, but he has the potential to be an absolute superstar.

2017 International Signings
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 1, 2017 -> 03:27 PM) Again, this is not true. Would you rather sign a potential superstar or 10 mediocre prospects for the same amount of money? For me the answer is clear.

2017 International Signings
I really hope the Sox sign him. He's supposedly a premier talent and would definitely be a 1st round pick if he was draft eligible. All it will cost the Sox is money, they need to pull the trigger at whatever price.

Pedro Alvarez
QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 28, 2017 -> 12:41 PM) I want Alvarez. The Sox rebuild is SLOW. So try to win this year as well. We need a DH desperately. On paper he'd be a prime candidate to blossom. We always sign pitchers who are on the comeback trail, why not hitters? Alvarez would fill a need. Then you add a catcher and a middle reliever via trade if we are in contention at the all star break. I can't figure out how the Sox are selling any season tickets at this point. They are just telling the fans we are rebuilding at a snail's pace. We have a ton of veteran players still but we have no intention of contending with them. Seriously ... Shields?? Robertson?? Frazier?? Melky?? Avi?? Abreu?? Lawrie?? Holland?? Q?? And we're rebuilding?? I don't get it at all!!!! Don't insult me, White Sox. Pick up Alvarez now please. How are they rebuilding at a snail's pace? They traded away 2 of their biggest assets within a day of each other.

Revisiting Chicago Front Office Rankings from Jan of last year
I'd personally rank the Sox ahead of the Bears but otherwise that list looks good to me. The Bulls are an absolute trainwreck of an organization.

Robertson to WASH was close, now at stalemate
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Feb 24, 2017 -> 12:10 PM) Holding onto Robertson until June/July just might pay off. Iirc, Robertson usually gets off to strong start. The Sox won't contend this year or next so pitching his ass of to get traded to a contender is his best chance of seeing the playoffs any time soon. I agree. In a perfect world, Jones takes over for him in the 2nd half, dominates, and is subsequently traded for a haul in the offseason. Burdi can take over the reigns in 2018 if he has a nice season this year, and if not, sign a stopgap until he's ready.

Buehrle jersey retirement
I was at the game in Milwaukee when Buehrle hit his only Major League homer. It was one of the coolest moments I've seen in person at a baseball game.

Buehrle jersey retirement
QUOTE (raBBit @ Feb 23, 2017 -> 11:33 AM) For those interested in going to the game this is the same day as the Barstool at the Park charity event. All you can eat and drink the two and a half hours before the game and a lower deck ticket. Should be a great day at the park. whitesoxdave is going to be there I'm assuming?

Who would Boston prefer to acquire if they had their choice of Butler or George? I don't really know who'd fit their team better.

Buehrle jersey retirement
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Feb 23, 2017 -> 10:35 AM) It has nothing to do with us not realizing how good he was. We all saw it. The hangup is that he was only here for 6 full years and just 5 as a starter. If you start retiring numbers for guys that played for you for 6 years, you're going to start running out of numbers. Are you really trying to argue that Sale deserves his number retired more than Buehrle because of his talent level. Obviously peak Sale was better than peak Buehrle but there is a s*** ton more to it than that. Buehrle was here for 12 f***ing years. Not to mention the fact that, oh, I don't know, he was the ace of a World Series winning team. Come on man. We get it. Sale was your favorite. He's gone, move on. I never said Sale was more deserving because of talent. I simply said he is more talented. Obviously there are other requirements that are in Buehrle's favor that work against Sale. Here's some more interesting questions: Will Buehrle be a Hall of Famer? If Sale makes it one day, will he wear a White Sox hat on the plaque?

Buehrle jersey retirement
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 23, 2017 -> 10:24 AM) Some things are about more than stats. Mark Buehrle is absolutely a guy you retire a jersey for. In addition to what he did on the field, he was the consummate teammate, he was the face of the organization off of the field, and he never gave anyone a minute of problems. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Buehrle and definitely think retiring his number is warranted. I don't want you to think that I disagree with retiring his number because that's not the case at all.

Buehrle jersey retirement
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Feb 23, 2017 -> 10:26 AM) And Carlos Quentin was a more talented hitter than Paul Konerko. I think you know whose number will be retired out of those two. I wouldn't agree with that, lol.

Buehrle jersey retirement
I don't want to derail the thread any further but I don't think some of you guys realize how good Sale was. Buehrle had the advantage of being with the team for much longer, having playoff success here, and not being a hot head, but pound for pound I think Sale is way more talented than he ever was.

Buehrle jersey retirement
QUOTE (Tony @ Feb 23, 2017 -> 10:16 AM) So then you're cool with Black Jack having his number retired, too? He won a Cy Young with the Sox after all... His stats were nowhere as good as Sale, so no. The Cy Young he has is nice but Sale arguably should've won the award in 2014 and 2016 as well. McDowell was definitely a great pitcher for the Sox, but Sale is in a different tier IMO.

Buehrle jersey retirement
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Feb 23, 2017 -> 10:10 AM) Yeah I don't see it. Wasn't here long enough. Not enough accomplishments either. 7+ years on the team, 5X All Star, single season Sox K record aren't accomplishments? Lol ok.

Good for him. I loved Buehrle. Hope they do the same for Sale at some point.

2016-2017 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 23, 2017 -> 08:45 AM) It's probably going to take a 1st to acquire him. He's not a fit for the modern NBA. It's another guy that doesn't fit the system of the coach you have. He's a terrible defensive player and is unathletic. He can score but he's such a defensive liability that he doesn't really fit what most teams are trying to do. I want them to trade Butler for a nice deal from the Celtics because it's the only thing that makes sense if they truly care about winning titles (which they don't). As a sports fan, I think the point of this whole thing is winning championships. Could they cobble together some pieces around their star and win 50 games? Yes, probably. They can't be a legit contender doing it though which I've stated. Butler is on a cheap deal but they can't add enough around him to compete for championships. And then in 2.5 years he will get a massive deal. They can't add around him fast enough to make it worth it. Trading Jimmy resets the potential championship window. The rookies probably wouldn't be as good as Butler but they are cheaper and offer hope ideally. I understand if you don't trust Paxson and Forman to complete this process but I believe that relying on them to complete the rebuild is still a better option than patching 45 wins teams together and wasting Butler's prime without cashing in that asset. You may disagree but if you do your standard isn't winning championships. I'm sorry but I still disagree. It doesn't matter whether he's a "fit" or not. The Bulls are so deprived of talent that they need to jump at the opportunity to acquire as much upside as possible, even if said player doesn't fit on paper. Okafor's a gifted scorer; that's harder to teach than defense. And he's so young that there's definitely room for improvement under the right coaching. By no means am I calling him a future All Star, but I definitely believe that he could be a productive player and a second option to Butler on a contender. I'd much rather add a player like him and then a Gordon Hayward type than tearing it all down. Rebuilds just don't work as well in the NBA as they do in MLB.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 23, 2017 -> 07:42 AM) Oh yeah. #CHAMPIONSHIP I just don't understand your thought process on the Bulls right now. Why would you be opposed to the Bulls acquiring Okafor? I'd take him over anyone on the Bulls roster right now not named Jimmy Butler. In one breath, you want to trade Butler for young guys, and yet when the Bulls have a chance to pick up a young guy with lots of potential, you don't want him. Okafor is like 20 years old and his upside is tremendous.

Robertson to WASH was close, now at stalemate
QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Feb 22, 2017 -> 12:18 PM) You're right, thanks Mike. For some reason I thought he had signed a three year contract like Melky. Now I'm even more confused on when to trade Robertson. I don't know either, lol. What I do know, however, is that the Sox shouldn't trade Robertson for Severino straight up, even if Washington eats all the salary. I think Robertson is worth more than that.
