QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 30, 2017 -> 09:28 AM) The White Sox and Cubs aren't making a Quintana deal In the past I would have agreed with you. But it's all about the rebuild now isn't it? I think Jerry's too old to let things like this get in the way. I'm envisioning a conversation where Hahn tells Jerry that we have 2 good offers. The better offer is from the Cubs for Jimenez +. I just don't see Jerry saying to take the worse offer because I don't want Quintana helping the Cubs. That in itself is hurting the White Sox. I think they're above that now. Maybe I'm wrong? And boy is the need ever there. The Cubs probably need Quintana more than any other contender in baseball does.

I would strongly prefer Eloy as a headliner for Q as opposed to guys like Frazier or Rutherford. Even if it comes at the expense of depth in the trade. We can fill out the system's depth when trading everyone else.

http://www.nj.com/yankees/index.ssf/2017/0...a_doesnt_w.html This article says Quintana doesn't want to leave Chicago for a pennant chase. They cite Nick Cafardo from the Boston Globe. --- http://www.nj.com/yankees/index.ssf/2017/0...white_soxs.html And another article from the same nj.com, about whether they should bite on Quintana or not.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 26, 2017 -> 08:36 AM) Average score so far is equal to 6.6. 6.8 without Greg's 2, haha. I guess another element to this is feeling the Sale trade was one player light (a significant third piece instead of two more lesser ones) and the initial stumbles of Lucas Giolito. Of course now, Fulmer and Collins are taking the most criticism, along with Timmy Anderson. (Also pretty obvious the Red Sox weren't ever including Devers or Benintendi. Moncada lights it up in his recall and maybe that trade goes down as Devers and Kopech instead?) I suspect that if they wouldn't have included Moncada, then Sale would have been moved for a package headlined by Robles. Which then probably would have screwed the return for Eaton.
-
I gave it a 7. The returns on Sale and Eaton, plus the signing of Luis Robert are big pluses. That nobody else has been traded yet, specifically Quintana - is a tad disappointing.

When the Sox are ready to contend in 2019/2020, who is the manager?

QUOTE (harkness @ Jun 25, 2017 -> 04:48 PM) Why? Getting swept by a team with the worst record in the American league, and his team looking mentally unprepared? The Sox talent level is near the bottom of MLB. If anything they've over-achieved this year so far. -

QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Jun 23, 2017 -> 08:14 AM) Theres no way 5/50 or 5/60 gets it done now. It may have 2 months ago, but now you are likely looking at 8/140 to get it done. Wait til the end of the year and its lkely 8/200. The front office has foolishly continued to ignore the rapid growth in Avi's value. Come on. You think he goes from the brink of being out of MLB to a 140-200 mil deal this fast? That's crazy talk if you ask me. I would consider an extension for Avi, but it caps around 5 years at 50 mil for me. There's way too much risk that he will regress to his old self, and in that case you'd basically be eating 50 mil. And I think he probably would take a 5yr/50 mil deal. It sets him for life. That comes a long way from where he was 3-4 months ago...when some were wondering if he would be playing in Japan soon.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 23, 2017 -> 07:42 AM) I'm still not giving up on Schwarber. The Cubs fans are down on him right now, so this is the perfect time to trade for him. Schwarber, Eloy Jimenez, and Dylan Cease. I think if you get Eloy, he's the headliner and you just take a lottery ticket or two with him. They aren't going to turn Schwarber in to a throw-in. But that's what i would want the most - Q for Eloy in some fashion.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 15, 2017 -> 10:30 AM) I am not sure if I am the only one, but after all was said and done, I am pretty disappointed too. There just isn't a whole lot of high ceilings in the bunch. It felt a lot more like a Kenny Williams draft with a lot of high floors. We drafted one HS that we will sign (in all likelihood the late draftees aren't signing), and he is as far away as the 16 year olds in the DR from the sounds of it. While recognizing that drafts need to be judged years later - yeah, I came away feeling a but underwhelmed. And again, I think it's partly because last year's draft would have been hard to match. And also this year's first round seemed to take a big drop down at our exact #11 pick.
-
Might be posted somewhere else, but Bleacher Report listed the Sox as losers of the draft. They didn't like the Burger pick, and in general thought the Sox were in a position to be bold, but instead played it safe. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2715517...gramming-league

I would move Robertson and Swarzak for Soto, plus a lottery ticket or two. I would not do that deal if you swapped Kahnle in for Swarzak, though. Then they would need to add Keiboom.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 13, 2017 -> 09:40 AM) I think they are pretty happy with the standings. Dusty isn't the GM. Oh no, the lead is down to 8, better trade all the top prospects for David Robertson. You really want to mess that team up, start panicking when they are comfortably in first place. While I agree they have the luxury to wait if they must. I did laugh at you spinning the idea of them solving their bullpen woes in to something that would mess the team up

QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Jun 13, 2017 -> 03:44 AM) IMO, that was an awful first round pick, just awful. A nothing burger. This guy is a tank who will box out further with age. He looks like a lot of the big boys who used to play 16" softball around the Chicago park district diamonds. That video showing him stumbling over his own feet and falling down (twice) while attempting to corral routine ground balls should have been enough to tell Hostetler that this was the wrong guy. Its hard to Draft major league talent after the first 10 picks, I guess. Wow, just wow.. OK, perhaps a RH DH, But we already have Davidson so what was the purpose in drafting a guy like this? The draft just didn't pan out like the Sox probably had hoped. We needed one team ahead of us to make a reach, and it didn't happen. The Sox were in the position where the draft fell off. If nothing else, this should be a good example for people who think tanking isn't important. A few years ago the Sox missed out on Benintendi over a couple of wins, and now they are in the first spot that this draft falls off. There's never guarantees, even with the top pick, but your chances sure are better the higher you go.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 12, 2017 -> 10:34 PM) Soto, Kieboom, Luzardo for Robertson, Swarzak - do the Nats say yes? I would drop Kieboom out of that. That's too much from Washington's side. Soto looks he's becoming a very good prospect fast. Make it Soto plus a lottery ticket or two for Robertson and Swarzak. You make this move, then move Kahnle in to the closer role and see if he blossoms in to something great?

DRAFT TRACKER 2017, and Day One Discussion

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 12, 2017 -> 05:41 PM) Bit of a shocker with Callis moving to Evan White. One of the red flags seems to be his low walk rate. Evan White has similar upside to Pavin Smith from Virginia, although with a smaller floor. White’s bat will determine if he can stick at 1B and there are certainly questions if there is enough power and bat for him to stick there. He projects more as a top of the order hitter due to his batted ball skills and speed. I have concerns about his ability to draw walks, which could limit his ability to get on base when he’s not hitting, but he doesn’t have a big strikeout problem. I’d like to see more power and walks when he hits the pros. http://www.azsnakepit.com/2017/6/10/157508...ity-of-kentucky Wow both of them have Keston Hiura going #5 to the Braves. That's the guy I was hoping the sox would nab. -
QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jun 12, 2017 -> 04:55 PM) Quintana's FIP of 4.14 really is not that bad, and shows that he has been the victim of some bad luck. 3 1/2 seasons of reasonable control on a left handed quality starter with a good health record should not come cheap I don't know why we keep sugar-coating this. Quintana has pitched like garbage this year. He's afraid of throwing strikes, particularly when he gets 2 strikes on the hitter. He nibbles and they aren't chasing anything he throws outside of the zone. Yes he's an awesome asset moving forward, but no playoff bound team in their right mind would want anything to do with him right now.

QUOTE (Tony @ Jun 10, 2017 -> 10:57 PM) So take a team like the Astros. 44-19, with a 12.5 game lead in the division right now. Why would they pay "maximum value" for Robertson right now? What's the rush? If you were in the Astros front office, or even a fan for that matter, would be you beating down the door to pay maximum value for a RP on another team when you hold a 12.5 game lead? It's the same argument for the Nats, who hold a 10.5 game lead. I'm not saying Robertson won't be moved, and of course I want to see the Sox FO get as much as they can for him. But there are circumstances surrounding the deal that make it a little more complicated than "Robertson is pitching great, they need to move him ASAP for a GREAT package..." That is it. The big leads are allowing teams to sit on this for a while. The Nats absolutely have to trade for a closer and they know it. But they don't have to do it now. They're coasting to a division championship. It's in their best interest to wait it out and hope there are a bunch of sellers at the deadline, thus driving prices down.
