February 21, 20179 yr QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 09:43 AM) I'm sure Severinos defense is advertised, but, I'm kinda questioning why we are falling over ourselves to get a likely backup catcher. This is what i'm thinking. If Robertson's value is this low, why not give him half a season to try to re-establish some of that value? Unless the true motive is to cut salary....
February 21, 20179 yr I know you cant just look at one guy in Collins and think you have a position held down for the future but it seems odd to me that the Sox would target Severino only in a deal for Robertson. I would think that they would want to target talent were they have almost no talent in the making like 3rd base, more outfielders, or 1st baseman of the future. But I guess this is what rebuilding looks like, you dont just fill positions in order. You have to stock pile talent wherever you can get it.
February 21, 20179 yr QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 10:17 AM) Sox love Severino, was in an article about a scout who watched him and the other Nats guys we got I believe I can see it. Kid has some Salvador Perez (albeit light/poor man's as many obviously question his bat) in his game. Tremendous arm. Can definitely see him winning a gold glove in the future, plus it would be nice to have another young player who can bring it with the glove other than Anderson.
February 21, 20179 yr Why would the Sox want Derek Norris? Severino is a good get. If you can pair him with someone like Voth, Stevenson or Neuse, it's a fair deal. Soto would seem off the table unless we are picking up a majority of the DRob contract
February 21, 20179 yr QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 10:02 AM) I want to know who this other team is that the Sox are talking to is dammit! The Sox have been talking to everyone who will listen.

I doubt he would be the headliner, or at least I would hope not. If he was, I'd hope they would just hold on to Robertson til the deadline.

It never hurts to have depth an options at catcher Severino seems to have the floor of a glove first mlb backup, with the ceiling to be a regular if the hitting develops Even if Collins sticks at catcher, we will need backup options. Nobody catches every game anymore.

Nobody catches every game anymore. Even if Collins can stick at Catcher, he is probably two or three years away. It doesn't hurt to have someone behind the plate who can help our young pitchers instead of hurting them, and maybe stunting their development.

I'm totally fine with Severino being a part of a Robertson package, but more certainly needs to be included (hoping Soto)
February 21, 20179 yr someone is going to have to explain the severino love to me. in over 1500 minor league ABs his slash line is .243/.294/.338 i get that he is a very good defensive catcher, but doesn't seem the guy can hit a lick (and i could give a s*** about his 38 major league ABs)

His ceiling could be a regular if the hit tool develops further Getting Severino plus a quality prospect would be a very good deal

Nobody catches every game anymore. I understand this but Hahn appears to be in go big mode with all of his trades. Considering he hasn't made too many moves yet that shows he isnt just settling for back up catchers. I dont buy that the trade is centered around a Severino or if this trade opportunity with the Nats even exists. They might like him in a trade but I would be shocked if he is the headliner.

Soto or Fedde + Severino should be the target Sox should be open to kicking in cash to get the best possible return
February 21, 20179 yr QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 09:42 AM) Lit. There is no doubt that you are a teenager lol. I hope that term goes away soon
February 21, 20179 yr If catchers were so valuable for just defense or framing and no big hit tool, we wouldn't see Weiters going for 2 year deals and castro on 8 million AAV. I don't buy that a defense only catcher is so rare that we target that over a pitcher/position player with higher ceilings. If he is our main target, I hope he's Sal Perez behind the plate. Otherwise, I hope we are getting something interesting alongside him.

His ceiling could be a regular if the hit tool develops further Getting Severino plus a quality prospect would be a very good deal Glove 1st catchers aren't hard to find. Finding 1 with the ability to hold their own at the plate is hard to find. Severino hasn't demonstrated the ability to do so in the minors, so not sure why you'd think he can in the majors. It's not like he's a fringe guy either, he can barely maintain a .650 OPS in the high minors. That's called a career minor league player. If he's a throw in piece, sure, we'll take him, but if he's the main piece in a Robertson trade now I'd rather just keep him for now.

Yes. But it never hurts to have depth I'd fully expect more to be included with Severino

I dont think they would hold off on pulling a trigger for Fedde or Soto waiting for the second lower ceiling piece.

February 21, 20179 yr QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Feb 21, 2017 -> 11:59 AM) Season: "Cut Robertson! He's crap! Offseason: "Gonna need a Top 100+." Soxtalk gonna Soxtalk

This made me actually laugh out loud because I remember some folks were ticked the Sox didn't salary dump Robertson to the Yanks last August when the Yanks were rumored to be interested. Good one.
