  • Nope. Nobody will ever have to hear/read greg's opinions on the pick. Who'd we take in round two?

Few players in the 2018 college Draft class can match Walker's track record with wood bats. He led the Northwoods League with a .406 batting average in the summer of 2016 and was Team USA's most productive hitter last summer. His pure hitting ability gives him a chance to become the first Oklahoma position player selected in the first round since John Russell in 1982. Thanks to his hand-eye coordination, pitch recognition and controlled approach, Walker repeatedly laces line drives to all fields. He's not big but he has a quick left-handed swing and some deceptive strength that should produce at least average power. Though he makes contact so easily, he continues to hone his plate discipline and draws his share of walks. Walker's bat is his lone above-average tool and will have to carry him. While he uses his savvy to get the job done in center and right field for the Sooners, his average speed and fringy arm likely will push him to left field in pro ball. Scouts do love his instincts and makeup.

This is a bit of a strange one...in the sense that we already have Robert, Jimenez, Adolfo, Rutherford, Basabe, Fisher, Call, Gonzalez, etc.

And that he basically only has ONE plus tool.   If he can only play LF, that leaves his options pretty limited in this organization.

Rollie Fingers still with the handle bar stash. Gotta love kt. A great guy too.

Fisher has been a bust, not exactly a promising comp ?

Jameson Fisher, with the 119 wRC+ in a pitcher's ballpark in AA? Bust?

Yeah, I guess, but there are players that can develop both. You can't have an outfield of daniel palka's/nicky delmonicos.

Fair enough but I'd take those guys over an outfield of Courtney Hawkins'/Jarred Mitchell's any day

I guess it's possible he got lucky, but it seems very very strange that the Sox would pass on Alek unless they had legit reasons to not want him.

I don't think he's very good

I didn't have the info, someone came to me with it, and it was either a good scoop or lucky guess.

Looks like the OF logjam won’t be ending anytime soon.  Reallly wish we went for someone with a bit more upside there.  I feel like Hostetler is never going to draft more than one prep ever again.

Yeah, this is up there with Storm Throne.

Yes sir. Great name.

Reminds me of Jameson Fisher. Could work out ok.

I was gonna say Luis Gonzales...

I'm sure we'll here there was a guy they had a deal on drafted just before them.

Luis Gonzalez can play a true center at least.

Hostetlers drafts seem to focus on plus hit tool with a good walk rate.

You mean Roberts :)

Steele is a really good pick. I fully expected him to go in the first round.

As a 24 year old with a .378 BABIP, 32.3% K rate, & no defensive value?  I’d be pretty upset if that player is the comp for Walker.

Thomas going to college?

I like that he hit for power in the in the wooden bat league.  That speaks more than his 5-10 frame imo.

Scouting report is nearly identical except Walker is a bit more advanced with the bat.

At least we didn't take another Louisville outfielder?

But that doesn't make Fisher a bust. He was a 4th RD draft pick out of college, how high were your expectations?

How is Kumar Rocker still out there?

Doubt he'll get drafted before 10th round now. He's gotta be going to school.

Gonzalez has a much better arm and probably better speed. Also had a better k-BB ratio

And generally speaking I like that approach, but I also like having a diverse set of skills & talents in my system.  We desperately need more high ceiling prospects IMO.
