At this point it doesn't matter what Hahn or Kenny says, fans and most people on this board won't believe them even if it was the truth

And whatever they say, it doesn’t matter. They lost. You either sign him or you don’t. It was interesting to me how badly the Sox wanted their final offer out there. Rosenthal had it, and Hahn when he was on with Lawrence Holmes, who would normally not comment on something that that, said it was accurate. I quest that made every who thinks they tried and thought it was a accomplishment to come in second happy.

Aside from Eloy there is nothing exciting about any young player under the White Sox control. Anyone looking forward to Seby Zavala is nuts.

Yes, I am the one that is nuts.

Dylan cease sucks

The last few pages of this thread have had several posts that are way too combative. If you can’t post on this topic or the white Sox without insulting or taking pot shots at other posters, then you will miss out discussing it here when Harper actually signs.

I am so angry at the Sox. I am negative everything with them. I don’t even know if I want to continue being a fan of this team.

But this statement sucks and is just flat out wrong. You lose credibility with this.

You are banished from my mind good sir!

Yeah, I’m not sure they were aware the threat was as real as it was.

Shack, do you have any reason to believe that if they saw the Padres as a serious threat they would've offered a better deal over 8 years guaranteed?

Yes, I thought that was strange that Hahn acknowledged that the Sox reported contract offer was fairly accurate during that interview with Lawrence Holmes.  It does appear that the Sox front office wanted the fans to know that they were the runner-up and that they tried.  Embarrassing.

I am not shack, but I believe they got one final chance to match or better the Padres offer and shot it down....

I honestly don’t know what their intentions would have been. I believe they did not anticipate the Padres offer was what it was, and I texted Fathom like 10 minutes before the deal was announced to that end.

I did not spend much time posting on Soxtalk during the last several months, but I was extremely critical of their negotiation strategy in other areas in the weeks leading up to last Tuesday, and there are members of Soxtalk who can vouch for that.

I see.

They were fine paying over $300 million if he was still productive after 8 years but not upping the off above 300 within the 8 years? Just seems so silly with so much money to be made by his arrival had it occurred.

Who is we?  After the Padres signed Machado, it was pretty obvious that the Sox front office was completely hoodwinked.

His point is the information provided trickles down from the front office. The Sox were shocked they didn't land Manny. If the Sox were confident and that trickles to those providing information to SoxTalk, what can anyone do?

Given they were $50M short on the guarantee, they shouldn't have been that confident, but they were. But SD likely stepped up to the plate the day before he signed or that morning and MM/Lozano pounced. I have no doubt up until that point, MM was headed to Chicago. Unfortunately for the Sox, it tends to happen too much. Off the top of my head ARod, Vizquel (much smaller scale contract-wise), Torii Hunter, obviously Machdado, and even on the trade front, Miguel Cabrera. There are probably others I'm leaving out.

Shack quoted KW earlier, and in that same sequence where he used the sunglasses and shock, he did say they couldn’t build a winning roster and guarantee him $300 million. So second place and comfortable.

Point taken.

At the same time, when the forum has degenerated into something where posters with a positive outlook are going to be insulted, mocked, etc., then the forum has become something it shouldn’t have, regardless of the level of disappointment in the FO at the time.

I don't buy the theory that Harper has been their #1 target all along. If that was true, they wouldn't have blown 13 million on Alonso and Jay.

Funniest thing, they have proven they can’t build without a 300 million commitment either.

I try to keep up with you on Twitter so I might have seen some of it there. The whole thing is just so frustrating as many have said, had they came out of the gate at 8 and 280 or something things could've been much different.

I honestly do not know who their preference was. It seems to have changed over time. That said, who you prefer and who may appear to be more attainable may be different things.

This is what I believe.

And what I believe is they were told they have to match a 300 million dollar offer, and the Sox said "no thanks, we're good with our current offer" with the thought that Lozano was bluffing that they really had 300.  And yes, shack told me shortly before the announcement what the Sox thought the Padres offer was at.

If we just limit this to what was out on twitter, it appears Hector Gomez had their basic offer back in late January. So they did try to get this done earlier. The issue is they didn’t close and eventually they left the door open for someone like the Padres, who did.

We should all know that Lozano was undoubtedly throwing all sorts of nonsense at them, which they were left to try to navigate the best they could.

My guess is there were some things that they had sort of successfully busted as BS, and they thought the Padres’ offer was BS as well.

Unfortunately, it was not.

In this case I'm not sure. Bring in his friends and pay him likely less than what Harper will get would seem to be there most preference and most attainable.
