$4.3 million for that? Deserves a laugh.

Getting closer to spending 50 million guaranteed this offseason for not a single player that will be on their next contending team.  Stay hot Rick!

Unless it's for elite, future HOF free agents, then it's on lockdown security & hired mercenaries protecting it..... Too soon?

Ha ha, in another thread I said that Ivan Nova is an example of the White Sox thinking 5 years behind rather than 5 years ahead.  This is more of it.  Imagine if they won't bring up Dylan Cease or Dane Dunning cuz they're giving the innings to Ivan Nova and Ervin Santana.  This isn't a rebuild, it's turning trash into treasures.

They will bring up Cease and Dunning when they are ready, and it will have NOTHING to do with Santana and/or Nova.

Four million bucks to keep Dylan Covey from having to pitch.

Let's be real tho, Covey is a reliever.  Just let him do that.

$4.3M does seem a tad high, tho.  But that's just if he makes the club.

It' not a crazy idea.  Remember last year when they said one of the reasons they weren't bringing up Eloy is that they didn't want to take AB's away from Palka, Delmonico, and Ryan Cordell?  They may have been lying, but still...

May have been lying?  They were absolutely lying.  There's no way Santana or Nova will have any bearing on when Cease and Dunning get called up.

Covey belongs pitching in Tampa. He would excel in their opener strategy.

Neither one of them are ready to be on the major league team until AT LEAST September.  Dunning has 11 starts at AA and Cease had 10.  Cease's career high in IP is also 124.  Santana is a spaceholder so we don't have to rush anyone decent.

No one actually believed that, just like no one believes Eloy is being sent down to work on his defense.

At least those guys are young.  Palka, Delmonico and Cordell and infinitely more of a chance to be a part of the next Sox playoff team than Ervin Santana or Ivan Nova.

4.5 mil base if he makes the team

Per Heyman

36 year old Ervin Santana

I would expect no less from this front office.

Dylan Covey is an enigma. Some innings he looks completely untouchable and the next inning he can't get out of his own way. Tough call on Covey.

Okay, maybe it has nothing to do with Cease or Dunning.  Maybe I just don’t want to spend any of the precious time I have left on Earth watching Ivan Nova or Ervin  Santana and thinking, “I hope we can flip him for a C+ prospect.”

To be fair, the Sox can't win with the fan base on ANY signing that they do this off season other than Harper. They failed at the one and only addition that meant anything so all of the moves like this will just look pathetic.

At the very least, this is an excellent reason to give the guy more time, because that type of behavior suggests an issue with consistency and mechanics. So, if you have a losing team, you throw him out there, let him put up an ERA of 5 if that's how it goes, and maybe you have a 1 in 20 shot of him improving his consistency and breaking out as an actual contributor.

Or you could just waste $4 million on a veteran who was equally bad last year and hope that by the time he's 37 he develops into a guy who can help your rotation?

But anyway, yay keep it up guys this is the roster we need!

I don't mind this signing. If he sucks, they can cut him and not pay him. If he has something left in the tank, they can flip him for someone younger. But  here is a quote by Hahn at the end of last season. Who has been acquired for the long term since then?

The veteran exec emphasized that he’d like to avoid “short-term fixes that will complicate things in the long run.” Rather, he said, the focus will be on setting the organization up “for an extended run.”

I feel like we're all on an episode of punk'd sports fandom edition.

If Santana simply returns to good health, he'll be infinitely more valuable in july than Dylan Covey. We might end up with a solid prospect if it works out.

I'm bummed that we didn't get MM as much as any one, but this move isn't related to that. If EV is toast, the Sox cut him. No harm no foul.

None of these moves have complicated anything for the long run.

Which means 4.5 million if hes a starter. Not a bad deal at all. cut him and pay him next to nothing.
