He was towards the top of this list last year too, partially because he gets so many PAs. However, this year, all these hard hit balls are going straight into the ground

We were being a bit hard on Abreu...when he hits it so hard, sometimes it just looks like an awkward swing and hardly ever graceful.  He’s never been an aesthetically pleasing swing, like most lefties with longer swing paths.

Plenty of actual Hall of Famers and future Hall of Famers have been mentioned in this thread, many of whom weren't complete lotto tickets when traded.

Andrew Miller and Maybin were a lot better (career-wise) than the Sabathia/LaPorta multi-player deal, for example.

Certainly the Sox trade of Tatis had a big financial side to it also. Shields was a pitcher who had just been pounded by NL lineups recently and then pummeled by the owner. You would have thought this would give the Sox the upper hand in a trade or even made then think twice about a guy getting lit up in the NL with one less hitter to face.

instead the Sox appeared desperate giving up not a lottery ticket which is pure luck but a skilled young player who obviously had skills because they gave him $1M . If the Pads weren't willing to pay down Sheids salary without Tatis and with  the NL and his owner shitting all over him Hahbn should have looked elsewhere. He just got fleeced and we all knew it not because of Tatis hindsight but because Shields was bad.

I totally agree here, I don't get this idea the padres developed him. The guy was in the majors at 20, by the time they saw him he physically looked completely different. The sox DID see tatis play on backfields and they screwed up. Had they had him, he'd be just as good as he is now, I am sure.

Exactly .All this crap about him still being in the minors or not being as good is pure crazy speculation still thinking the Sox cant develop elite talent that had a strong pedigree.

The Sox trading Tatis is the definition of looking a gift horse in the mouth. He was gifted to them because either not a lot of teams had the INTL funds to get him or didnt believe in his talent as much as Tatis Sr has said Marco Paddy did.

They gave him away because they paid 700k for him and was getting back $31M in salary from the Padres for an old pitcher getting thrashed in the NL with another couple years on his contract. What a windfall ! CA-CHING CA-CHING!!

Everyone sees something in their lottery tickets.  If you are going to take a wild swing...go with a 17 year old shortstop with major league roots.  If you are going to buy a lottery tickets don't play popular numbers (because you will then split with someone else).  The Padres were't going to get Curbelo because he wasn't a lottery ticket.   So they looked way down at the bottom of the Sox barrel and said...well throw in this guy.  And yes...if there is a criticism...don't ever put a lottery ticket in a birthday card because its almost always worthless but when it's not its a disaster.
