December 11, 20196 yr I like the upside of Mazara to an extent especially with the guys we have around him. We will see
December 11, 20196 yr Does anyone still think the Sox are spending significant money this offseason on pitching after this pathetic acquisition?
December 11, 20196 yr Well they did something so there’s that.. not really who we wanted.. let’s hope they actually shell out for some SP now.
December 11, 20196 yr I thought we were shooting for BB and OBP!?!? We were dead last in the league last season in BB. We traded for a guy that draws 30 BB a year and gave away a guy that's hits for average and can draw walks. Silly terrible move.

Sox clearly have liked Mazara for a while, and if so many teams were pushing for him, the time was now. I think we should all wait and see what’s next instead of going nuts. Rather see Mazara than Kole in RF.
December 11, 20196 yr Texas just couldn't resist Steele Walker's Texas like name. Was hoping they'd like Gonzalez instead. Oh well. Hopefully he wakes up and mashes like Soler did.
December 11, 20196 yr Also if it’s just Walker, who is basically Mazara except in A ball, I think that’s preferable to giving Ozuna money for 4 years. Would have rather explored Marte and Nikki tho
December 11, 20196 yr lol we gave up our #6 prospect for a guy who hasn't hit 1 WAR in 2 years. Terrible.

On paper, I don't have any issue with this deal and could see many scenarios where it pans out. A year ago people were calling Moncada a bust and now he is one of the best players in baseball. Not saying Mazara will have that same "switch" flip, but lets not pretend that he doesn't have potential upside and worse case we are talking about a young, solid platoon guy. If the Sox like them and the change of scenery works, who is to say they can't extent him a year from now or even 2 years from now.
December 11, 20196 yr I have no issue with the move in and of itself but it’ll really be how it fits into the context of the rest of the offseason.
December 11, 20196 yr Takeaways: Sox went aggressively after targets that made sense that we’re not represented by Boras. (Wheeler and Grandal). When Wheeler didn’t pan out, they shifted to cheap players with control and upside that wouldn’t cost top prospects. That doesn’t leave you with many options. Edited December 11, 20196 yr by Orlando

December 11, 20196 yr Hopefully Mazara’s problem was just launch angle and the Sox feel they can fix it
December 11, 20196 yr Really interesting quotes from Bill James on Mazara from 2018. https://www.fantraxhq.com/2018-player-profile-nomar-mazara/ Nomar Mazara – Big Shoes to Fill When Bill James calls his shot, saying a player is “the next Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera-type hitter,” people listen. When he says that player is 22-year-old Rangers outfielder Nomar Mazara, people immediately start to wonder what he knows that we don’t. For those who don’t know who Bill James is, he is basically the O.G. of baseball analytics. He revolutionized the game and its use of advanced stats and sabermetrics. James, on a recent MLB Network interview, said “I love Nomar Mazara. I think he is a guy who has a chance to be a triple crown winner.” Incredibly high praise from one of the most respected analysts of all time. However, it’s also a little perplexing considering Mazara hasn’t exactly dazzled in his first two major league seasons.

December 11, 20196 yr Mazara has put up the same exact stats for 4 years straight, I highly doubt he will surge...he may even get worse. My guess is he will stay similar.
December 11, 20196 yr Just a really pointless, desperate move made in a situation that didn’t call for desperation.
December 11, 20196 yr Sox tried to trade for Mazara at least two other times. Clearly they like him. I just wish they were able to get JDM also.
