So we have him for 1 year at a rate probably 10m or so below his market value.  He also supposedly had a down later portion of the year last year.  We have some leverage if we want it.  We can offer to rip up the current deal and offer say 3/45 or 3/50 or something less.

I dont like the deal but I am thinking about justifying the price paid now.  An extension helps justify the price paid.

2/30

The title of this thread got me all excited thinking that we already extended him. Lol

It is a really good environment right now for a team to have players on one year deals.

I'd like to see how our internal players develop before clogging up the rotation with big contracts.  If things go well this year, the Sox may be only looking for a #5 type next year and maybe not even that.

Do you mean 1 year 22m on top of what he has or 2 years 15m per on top of what he has?  Because the first number is already well above the QO and the second number isnt enticing enough to forego FA imo.  I think we should offer 2/36 on top of what he has then so maybe its 3/44 and then we add another 1+m for 2021 as incentive if necessary.

Pay him what he's owed this year. Then next 22 n 23 15 per

Actually though if theres a lockout next year... Hes older... Maybe an extra 2/30 would appeal to him.  But i think it would cost a bit more.

I see

Is he qualifying offer eligible?  If so your one year extension is about 19 million as a floor?  Everyone saying this guy is Bauer quality so how much less would he ask for on one year?  I doubt he is thinking low but he is older. How much risk is each side willing to take. If he pitches good , what would Yankees or Boston offer cause that’s what you’re up against.

Sox can’t offer QO

I don't believe he is. But he would jump all over it if we could offer him one.

I am thinking because of his age, if he would accept a 1 year deal with an option that would be ideal.  However, I would think the Sox would have to offer at least 2 years guaranteed to have him bite on an extension.

I hope our prospects and young MLBers develop like we should want them to.  If that happens, we can always eat some money on the back end of a Keuchel and/or Lynn deal to get a quality prospect back and/or some MLB pieces that better fit the puzzle at a later date.

I like having the ability to trade a SP even with 1 year left only.  Sure you might have to eat some money, but let's say you have to eat $5M, you can get a prospect or some MLB player contracts which you otherwise could not buy for $5M outright.

Having to make room for quality players is good.  So for that reason I would try to extend him (and also to justify the expense here, which isn't always a great move but which I think is a logical move in this situation).

My answer (Yes, 2 years) is contingent on a decent price.

Agree.

Best compromise IMO is 2 guaranteed years in 2022-23 + TO on 2024.  Some of the guaranteed money he wants can be put into in the buyout of the TO, e.g. maybe there's an $8M TO buyout but it costs like $12 or $13M more to bring him back, something like that.

why?  He will have played the entire year with us.  I believe we can (if that's still a thing in 2021)

For those who say no in this poll, do you at least admit the Sox lost this trade?

Absolutely. Lock him up thru 2023, which also aligns with the team’s control on Giolito and Keuchel.

"Do you admit" makes it sound like I ever thought otherwise.

You traded a solid piece for him so give him another two years with a team option for year 3.

This is the exact type of trade you and I were discussing yesterday and the type of move an org like the Dodgers or Astros makes. Now finish it off with a short extension and it’s a huge win.

I don’t know why an extension wasn’t agreed upon before the trade was made but whatever.

Perhaps it's close. Rosenthal reporting he was talking extension with Texas.

LOVE the idea of rework his deal for this year. 3/45-50 is perfect. Also still allows for another starter signing and gives you a strong 3 year window with everyone on board, while still allowing the future to get it figured out (Crochet, Dalquist, Kelley).
