Seems like he was hurt last year... trash in 2018 and 2019... but really good before then for quite some time.

Wonder if injuries contributed to his decline.

In July 2019, he was collided at home plate, with concussion & broken nose.  Angels released him less than a month later.  He's since had very short stints with 3 other teams.  Wondering if he has lingering concussion issues.

  • So Collins is gonna have to prove he can ACTUALLY catch.  This is a great depth/fallback move.

  • The Collins love on this site is incredible. The guy is not exactly a front line player. He is not great defensively and what we’re his stats in the minors? He is not that great. Neither is lecroy but

Neither is lecroy but he probably knows how to handle pitchers and is a smart catcher. Good depth for sure , nice sign. That’s it no all star no starter just good damn depth.

Actually, Collins stats in the minors are exactly why people want to see him get a legitimate chance.  With his elite walk rate, he always seemed like someone who could OBP around .350 even with a very low batting average, and hit at least an average number of homeruns for a catcher.  The problem is his short sample sizes against MLB pitching have not been good and we still haven't gotten an indication that his catching is even at an adequate level for MLB.

How many games should Grandal catch next year? 100? 95?

130+.

Mendick can cover 2nd but it’s just scary how many slap hitters they can very easily end up putting in the lineup.  4 of the 5 you mentioned have had injury issues throughout their career.

Precisely why Marwin Gonzalez needs to be brought on board.  Can't imagine it would take more than 1/$5, 2/$9M type deal.

He seems like a guy who can get better with consistent at bats, which he will not get here in a backup role.

Yeah.  Kinda like EE last year.  And a couple other guys the year before.  All Yermin can do is hit.  Don't let him near the roster.

What is the market for a back up DH?

I count 53 series in the season. Start times aren't set yet, but nearly every series has a day game following a night game in there, so 110 is about an upper limit I would think.

115 + 20 games at 1B, 10 as DH

Grandal should be playing damn near everyday.  Just has as he has done pretty much every season of his career.  He was way under utilized last year, though I do know he struggled with back issues. Now that your loverboy McCann is gone, no reason Yasmani should not be catching pretty much all but the 1 or 2 day games after a night game per week.

They don't have a choice. There isn't going to be a DH spot open.

It will be interesting how the Sox use him this year. He usually plays 130+ games . However, historically his production takes a drop after the All-Star game. That would indicate he tends to break down later in season.  He also tends to struggle offensively when he plays other positions other than Catcher.

Amen!

Even if Lucroy can catch decently (which is not a certainty), the Sox really can't afford his dead bat in the lineup.

I much prefer Flowers.

To extend that metaphor, you don't give the keys to a Lamborghini to an inexperienced driver like Collins without expecting an accident or two.

Pretty tough dude!  Evidently, he played with a herniated neck disk for 3 years which kind of matches up with his struggles as it got worse.  He also got concussed and a broken nose in a July 2019 home plate collision. Surely that couldn't have helped it.  His surgery was last off season over a year ago (not sure exact date).  But its sounds like he's feeling pretty good now and ready to get back to it.  He could be a heck of a pickup!

Hopefully! Maybe James McCann-esque?

I wouldn't give go-kart keys to LaRussa.

Hoping Katz, learning from McCann last year, the addition of Narron and a commitment to working will result in Grandal significantly  improving his game calling this season.
